You have to fiddle with the texture, as well as the coloring. All textures are different, so many you have to mess around with the layer blending modes, most popular being "Multiply", "Overlay", as well as "Soft Light".
There is no real way. it's basically a big game of fiddling. |

If i was making a picture like that, i'd use a lot of grunge brushes of different colores, each one on a different layer assuming i was using PhotoShop. But basically...it really is just a game of fiddling...
