if you had to choose one subject in school that you thought was the least-useful in life, which one would you choose?

- (Your Language)
- Social Studies, Geography, History
- Science
- Math (Algabra, etc.)
- (Language other then yours)
- any other subjects that i dont know because i dont take them yet

I'd say Language other then yours. Simply because not everyone needs to know another language. I was thinking about Social Studies, Geography, History but i guess its useful to know about the past, and the countrys and such. But i definitly think math is useful. What are your thoughts?

i love foreign language because i just find it interesting to be able to communicate with others from different cultures and what not :)

Hmmm, I go to Catholic School and we take Religion. It's important to me because I'm a practicing Catholic, but to most others it's like.. "what's the point?"

Also, I hate problem solving in Math.

There are parts of Math and Science that really aren't useful at all to life unless you are planning a profession in that area.

To most people subjects like Math and Science are stupid and a waste of time (the advanced ones), but the general point of making you take them is to show colleges that you can commit to several years of one things getting more and more advanced, and to expose you to a bunch of different things to help you decide what you want to do in life.

I personally dislike how our school district made us take IPC (Integrated Physics and Chemistry), which was a basic intro to both, then forced us to take one or the other in addition to bio. I think if we decided that we didn't like either we should have been allowed to continue in Bio and go to Bio II in place of physics and chemistry.

edit: @ Meastro: Do they force you to take spanish or is it a foreign language? Down where I live (Texas) spanish is highly useful if you're going into certain industries or works.

Depending on your profession I do think some parts of math and science can be useful, but there are a lot of parts that I find stupid and not worth even learning.

I have to agree with Suzzette about the learning in higher maths thing. Where the basic stuff is definitely something you need to know, but in higher math classes, it doesn't matter unless you plan on going into a career that requires that sort of knowledge.

I always complain to my friends that learning this is absolutely unnecessary. Most of the stuff in just about every subject is irrelevant.


Really, all we need to know in life is simple math, grammar/spelling and social skills so we can learn to deal with the real world.


But to answer your question, I'd say Science or History.

Some science we may never use and may forget the year after we learn them.
And then math that we rarely use unless it's in our career.
IMO, I think the basic maths (grade school up to algerbra & geometry) should be taught and the rest be left up in college depending on your career.

Out of the listed, foreign language is definitely the most expendable. Physical ed/gym is also expendable, but I wouldn't say the least useful; some people just can't grasp concepts in other classes, but gym--everybody can do it, it's just whether or not they decide to apply themselves.

I think History is probably the least important, at least to me.

I don't understand how Science isn't useful. All medicine you take was developed and tested by science. I can understand how perhaps SOME areas of science (can't think of any off the top of my head) aren't useful, but science in general is extremely useful.

And about math being confusing/stupid/whatever: I used to think that in general, too, but when you make it to Calc, everything suddenly is like - "OH! So that's what we learned it for!" It's like every piece of the puzzle suddenly flies together. It's cool.

Then again, since I'm a math dork, I can't really say I'm unbiased. Whatever.

I also agree with higher level math... along with some aspects of advanced, high level science. If you're not going to major or work in those fields, I sometimes feel like it's not that needed.

All of them are extremely useful, but I'd probably agree that foreign languages are the ones I'd place least on my priorities.

The point of higher-level math isn't so you can use those exact things in life, it's to expand your mind and get it to be able to understand such difficult concepts. No, you're probably not going to be graphing a bunch of things in your day-to-day routine, but you have the mental capability to do so because you were made to do it. So, even if you don't need those classes, it's good to be able to understand them.

It really depends on what field you are going into/what you want to do in life. For what I want to get into (Sociology/Art History), the science and math classes do nothing for me.
