do people in your area call dances balls? why is it called a ball? what is the etymology of the word? I dance at a dance. I don't ball at a dance. Well, maybe sometimes. But that's not the reason I got invited.
Also, people here call water foutains "da bubblah." Why is it a bubbler? It doesn't bubble. It resembles a fountain more than bubbles. So why do they call it "da bubblah?" |

Nope, they don't. They just call it "a dance". Though I would be more intrigued to go to a dance if it was called a ball. Just seems more... fancy, and more elegant.
![]() Kudos, James. You are about to take over the entire 1st page of the lounge. |

we called dances "balls"because they were dances in which you had to go and by a fancy dress that you would like wear once then sell on ebay.

Where I live, we call a dance when people don't dress up, they just go with their regular clothes on; we call a ball when everyone is dressed formal. I've heard people call dances balls, but I guess different places call things different names.

For this all-boys highschool near my school they have a "Crusader Ball" because their mascot is a crusader.
