I picked up a really old vexel I started a while ago but never finished, and now I'm stuck with the hair. It's dark, and has a little bit of shine to it, so I can't really do the "strand by strand" technique.. any tips on how to vexel it?

Don't know if this suggestion would help. But the only thing that came to mind instead of doing the hair strand by strand do it something like this:
