Okay, Well, I wasn't sure where this would go, so I thought it'd either go in Sports or School? Feel free to move the topic if you find it necessary.
Well, I'm going to be a freshmen in Highschool next year, and I was wondering...do you need experience to try out for a sport? I want to try out for soccer, but I have no experience whatsoever. Do they usually just accept everyone? Is there anything I can do to train a little by myself, so the chances of getting in are more likely? Most people at my school have already taken a specific sport to get into that sport in highschool, so I thought I wouldn't be able to get in since I have no experience. Thankss if you can reply to this ![]() |

You don't need experience to tryout, but if you have a big school, chances are that you might not be accepted.
You can probably go after school to your school's soccer field and practice though. But you might need permission to. |

well i think it depends on the amount of students attending the school that want to play soccer. Like in my school lacrosse isint a big sport and we dont have to try out cause lacrosse isint a big sport.

you dont have to have experience. i started track as a freshman and i knew nothing about it.
usually in high school, there are these teams: varsity junior varsity freshman (usually in 2 or 3 seperate freshman teams. A, B, and C team) and there is actually stuff that you can do to train yourself. doing sprints, playing with a soccer ball, going to soccer games and familiarizing the sport to yourself are all good ideas. |

Thanks for all the replies :]
Um...I would also like to know some of the basic things they ask you to do during try outs? When the weather gets warmer, I might ask one of my friends who plays soccer to help me out. |

well, it really depends on how competitive sports are for your school.
my school splits sport teams into: jv (mostly freshman + sophmores) varsity (mostly juniors/seniors + the occasionally really talented freshman) the thing is, at my school, even people who are average or above average at soccer can not get into the jv team. so if you're in a similar situation to me, i'd say you definitely need experience and simply training over the summer will not get you into the soccer team. however, some sports aren't as competitive as others, and again, at least at my school, cross country is a sport most people don't need that much experience to get into. of course, you have to run like crazy, but if you run hard daily now until august, for example, i'd think you'd have a pretty good chance of getting in. if your school isn't as competitive though, you could go to a soccer camp during the summer or simply grab a friend and play as often as possible. at try outs here, they basically ask you to run about 2k, and then ask you to do stuff like dribble the ball across the field, around cones, try to score a goal against somebody, etc. and then place you into teams so they can watch you play in a "game". good luck :) |

in my school, you need to try out. you don't necessarily have to be an amazing player, but of course you have to be able to pick up the basics quickly.

Ok so I play soccer for my high school and here is what you need to know.
You should probably start to go for long distance runs. believe me if you have good endurance soccer coaches will like you. If you have never played before you should practice just kicking a ball. See if you don't look like a total fool. Along with long distances you should also practice sprints. If your tryouts are anything like mine were, then you should stalk up on as much icy hot as you can buy. MOST IMPORTANT: Focus on building endurance and getting in very good shape. You can always be taught how to play different positions by the coaches. If you can I would try and watch some soccer games on TV if you can. That way you can at leist have a decent feel for the game. Hope this helped |
