Ok, so yeah...I ventured out to a mall yesterday. Some dude started talking to me and I was like. Ok hi...? Then he goes and says: Yeah I used to be 'emo' too. WTF?
Since when am I EMO?
Since when can someone judge me from two seconds of talking.

He claims: If your a guy with bangs, you are emo.
WTF?

I don't know. But its making me laugh tremendously now. =]
And what the heck is a 'gemoth'?
Someone was like: EW LOOK AT ALL THOSE GEMOTHS OVER THERE>

Wtf? is that?

What label have you been called, and were they right?

A group of friends and I went to Renfest. One of our friends was a very artsy guy with black hair and tight clothes. He was very nice and funny. We walked past a group of guys who all hit him in the shoulder as they walked and said "Emo."

Some people need to be shot in the legs.

It sounds like some sort of mixture between a Goth and an Emo, only emos are kind of what goths were in the late 90's, so it's cultural inbreeding all the way =B.

Haha.

ANYWAY.

I've been told I have emo tendencies, which is true, I suppose... I dunno. I've never really been labelled, particularly.

I remember someone messaging me on myspace calling me a goth because of the layout I had up. blink.gif HAH. Right. I can't believe people would base someone's entire personality on their myspace, of all things.

Then there are some in school who refer to me as the "smart" one who gets straight As. Nope, not me. I get good grades, but I haven't gotten straight As since seventh grade. Even so, it's not like I'm exceptionally smart. ermm.gif

^^^Emo tendancies?!!? I find that amusing since emo is basically a percieved label. If someone told me I had emo tendancies I'd laugh in their face. There is no such thing as emo, goth, and prep. And there is no spoon.

stereotypes are starting to become retarded.

someone asked my if i was going "punk rock" because i have a mohawk that rarely gets put up because i'm too lazy. i said sure. i like how things now are based off how you dress, rather than what people really know about you.

Emo isn't even a kind of person; it's a style of music. People have just taken it to mean people who wear lots of black/Vans/Converse, have thick-rimmed black glasses, listen to emo[tional] bands (ex: Dashboard Confessional), and cry a lot (to name some things).

I really, really don't like that label. Emo didn't used to mean depressed but now it's become synonymous with being sad. If someone is not acting as happy as they usually are for one day, people go off on them and say, "Stop being so emo." It's annoying.

Anyway, no one should be judged or labeled. I'm glad you ignored them, Stefan.

^x2 agreed.

especialy when they have the definition wrong...

QUOTE
"Emo" is not short for "Emotional." "Emo" does not mean Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional, despite what MTV has lead you to believe in the last few years. "Emo" is not sidebangs, tight pants, and male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships. "Emo" is not the use of diluted, meaningless metaphors and similes such as "My arms are like pinecones," and most definitely is not the rampant use of words such as "autumn," "heart," "knife," "bleeding," "leaves," and "razorblade."

I just thought I'd clear that up after all of these "definitions" in which I have encountered an unbelievable amount of people who try to pass off their blatantly false pretenses as fact, and are slowly infecting others with their high-horse, holier-than-thou bullshit. Because honestly, with your ridiculous definitions, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Britney Spears are/was "emo bands."

Now, onto the real definition.

In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo, but personally, I don't quite follow that philosophy.

Often, more recently, this gets intertwined with post-hardcore, and understandably so - that's nothing to make an issue of, since well shit, at least it's close.

Since the late 90s, though, bands have been emerging in the vein of Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, and the thousands of their clones. As far as I can tell, some lazy journalist somewhere, writing an article about them, decided "Well, f**k, no one knows what emo is anyways, so I'll call these bands "emo" - sounds more appealing than bubblegum pop rock..." and the spiral continued downwards into the current amalgomation of bands MTV has told everyone is "emo."

Somehow, people decided that "emo" meant "emotional," which is obviously bullshit, as 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.

Hope that helps.

Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail, and My Chemical Romance falls under the "horrible pop rock" genre, not the emo genre.

Rites of Spring is emo.

I've been labeled emo... Which is pretty odd.

The stereotypical emo is pale/white, wears loads of eyeliner, has wild black hair and is depressed, no?

I'm heavily tanned, wear thin eyeliner, have long black straight hair... and am only depressed when sitting for my 50minute bus ride home.
