I've heard really terrible stories abou uber-competive-ness at school; like dog-eat-dog in the classroom in high school.

Nobody at my school is like, extremely cut-throat, but there are kids who will do anything to one-up that one certain person who always seems to "beat them" without trying.

I'm like the person who always gets a decent test score without studying.
Then I rub it in the stupid peoples faces, like 1 hour for just a C?

University of Toronto is the most competitive school in Canada. Some people here are crazy about being at the very top. And if you don't become competitive yourself, you'll be left behind, especially in my current program of Life Sciences. I honestly think this is one of the major reasons why students in LS don't enjoy undergrad; competition kills you. There's a huge desire to go on to med school, dentistry, pharmacy programs, etc., that my school offers and it's pretty cut-throat. I'm starting to realize all this now. :(

We don't have people like that here... at all. We have high drop out rate. Lots of drugs and sex at my school. The people who are cut throat are more cut throat about drugs than grades. I know it sounds pathetic, but it's true.

There was always this girl in my elemtary school that ALWAYS had to be the first done and right. She'd correct her own paper just so she could fill in the right answers rolleyes.gif

My school is pretty competitive when it comes to class ranking. Some people only take advanced classes to boost their GPA because of the extra points that are given. And that's fine and all, but sometimes it gets out of hand. For instance, this one girl at my school didn't take a science class this year fearing she wouldn't do well. Instead, she took like three advanced art classes that are gimme grades (free 100s + the extra points).

I think the one thing that everyone at my school always competes about is: well I got a good grade, but I didn't study or work at all. I think it's retarded because I don't see how getting a B and not studying at all is better than getting an A and studying. I'm pretty sure colleges won't look at that.

Yes! I have so many friends from there and I'm going there next year. My boyfriend told me, "Vic (his brother) tells me horrible stories about UT people. Just don't become a typical UT person.." ahahah. You're talking about sciences; can you imagine what it's like in the performing arts, where you HAVE to be better than everyone else? It's insane.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Asian-filled magnet schools, where hardass parents run rampant, and teachers expect your soul in return for an A. _smile.gif

have i got a story for you.

back in 8th grade, i was best friends with this really smart girl. we always talked about how we never got student of the month awards even though we know we do good in school. then a few weeks before graduation, i got student of the month. we also learned our class ranks, and i was #1. i expected her to be happy for me, but instead, this was what she wrote in her xanga:
"so cheryl got student of the month. we always talked about how we never got student of the month. i guess that`s done now. well i guess the teachers view her as being better than me. anyone that is better than me cannot be my friend. already i find myself hating her more and more each day. so whether it be this year or the next, i`m going to stop talking to her. i hope she gets really upset when she reads this."
OF COURSE I GOT UPSET! she was supposed to be my best friend! i was just like.. what the hell?? so ever since then, we stopped being friends, as expected. we`re now in 10th grade, and we still have some classes together. i don`t acknowledge her at all, and i know i do good in school. i don`t care if i/she gets the better grade. but yeah. that`s the story.

Everyone's really competitive in my Language Arts class.. I strive to be at the top of the class, but there's always some people who try to get a better score than me. We have extra credit tickets we could use to raise up our scores.. Someone already had an A and put all hers in so she could have a higher avergae than anyone else.. ermm.gif

My high school is HELLA competitive, because in Texas, if your ranking is in the top 10% of your graduating class, you get automatic admission to public Texas universities/colleges as long as you complete the application. Even more kids want to go to Ivy League schools, and there's a large Asian population as well, which makes it even more competitive academically. Very cutthroat environment.

But you can't let it get to you, since there's 10,000 other ways to get admission into college. I do want to go to college, but I don't want to do it the traditional way. I feel like the cutthroat competition isn't worth getting caught up in, to be quite honest.

edit - missmelon's post made me realize I needed to clarify something. Thanks!

I remember seeing the 10% thing on 60 Minutes and thinking how crazy and ridiculous it is how competitive some of the people were getting. They showed how after every test, every assignment, they'd take out their calculators and calculate their grade, gpa, and rank. Some would even move to less competitve high schools so they could easily make the top ten percent, right?

Ugh, people like that scare me. No matter where they are. Texas, University of Toronto, UCLA. Oh geee, I can't imagine the competition to get into med school in a few years.

I go to school in Texas, and I'm top 2% of my class, but unfortunately the only school I'm interested in going to in Texas is Rice. And Rice doesn't give automatic admission for being in the top 10% of your graduating class. I guess UT could be a fallback.

Honestly, I used to be like that.
"In your face, bitch, I got a 104%. Take that to your 103%." or whatever.

Then I got to high school and I was like, "f**k it. When will I need this for the real world, huh?" and there are still people in my geometry class that are like, "Are you going to take Algebra II honors next year?" and I'm just being honest by saying no, and they get all over my case and getting all serious like, "What? Do you want to go to a good college? You can't get into a good college with non-honors classes." and I just told them I wanted to go to a local college. ;D

After a certain point, people stop caring how other people scored. At least, that's how it was with me. I remember my sophomore year of high school, there was this one kid that tried to brag that his grade in chem was higher than mine by something ridiculous like .2% or something, and we both had really high A's. I tore that kid down so bad.
