Well i swam for years and my stomach was flat. But it all depends on what style and what intensity you are doing.

I swam competitively for years and I never lost more than 5 pounds, let alone a flatter stomach. In fact, I found that swimming built up the muscle around my arms and shoulders and made me look really wide.

Don't get me wrong, though, swimming is great exercise in moderation, but like anything else, too much of it could give you some undesired results.

If the flatter stomach thing isn't working out, you could try something more conventional like sit-ups or some other gym exercise.

I was told that if you did excercises underwater than you'd get a flatter stomache. Not just swimming alone. Excercising underwater makes you work on your stomache harder because like you already have to suck it in and stuff, so yeah. *shrugs* Not sure if it's completely right, but it worked for me a little.

I don't think swimming makes your stomach flat. It just tones/bulks up your arms and stuff.

It depends on the stroke and the intensity. I used to be a butterflyer and I had a six pack but freestylers usually don't.

Not really, swimming works your entire body.

hmm.. I dont think under water would be as effective.. as say.. Running or something.
because if you're holding your breath.. then Oxygen cells cant get to the muscles your working.

Swimming is good for you. It involves cardio and you're using your muscles. If you want to lose weight you need to do CARDIO. I hate it when people say "Oh, I've been doing crunches and I haven't lost that little pouch" That's because crunches work your muscles, and to see your muscles you need to lose the fat covering them up.

It just makes sense. If you don't believe me, think of it this way: If a 400lb man did crunches everynight he wouldn't have flat washboard abs and still fat everywhere else, would he?

A great body starts in the kitchen. You have to eat right and exercise.

Underwater is much more effective, there is the water resistance.

YEAH GO XC!! (we're bringing seXC back, hahaha. laugh.gif ) Except I agree with Jackie.. it doesn't really make your stomach that much flatter, it's just the extreme exercise you do with it (situps, etc).

swimming alone won't make your stomach flat. It's in combination with a healthy diet, and doing the right movements to target your abs. You have to work off the fat, so swimming will help...just don't expect a six pack to pop out tomorrow morning

Swimming, you really use your core muscles...and working those muscles makes your stomach flat.

I always found the people with the best abs are people that:

(a) eat healthy
(b) do a mix of exercises...running, swimming, taebo, and dance....ballet or jazz, as well as taking time out to do stomach exercises.
© I also heard pilates does wonders as well...

Not really, swimming works your entire body.

Guess it depends on the perception of "best".

No doubt running and swimming are both excellent forms of exercise. Swimming works more muscle groups, so in that sense it is better; of course, running is also a bit more practical (i.e. not everyone has easy access to a pool, but everyone has easy access to a place to run) so in that sense, running is better.

swimming should help EVERY part of your body..what kind of work out do you do?
i go to swimming lessons, and there are 4 courses (life guard, swimming fitness, diving and the other one i forgot) I do swimming fitness and we do 400 frontcrawl and backcrawl, 200 butterfly, 200 of whatever stroke you want and 100 of breast stroke. Now thats just the beginning of it...

anyway, ive been swimming for..3 years? and i have a flat stomach
but its not just the exercise, its what you eat too
