Pft - I call it trying to find a way to get out, in hopes of surviving...somehow. There was one guy that actually did slide down something (I can't recall), and he lived, although he was in the hospital for his legs for quite awhile.

QUOTE There was one guy that actually did slide down something (I can't recall), and he lived, although he was in the hospital for his legs for quite awhile. I heard that was an urban legend or whatever. Uh, people jumped because they decided they'd rather fall to death then cook to death. |

Urban legend? Hmm...oh well it probably was. When I first heard it, I definitely had doubts. Yeah - it would be a lot quicker to jump than to burn to death.

how is it suicidal? they were trying to escape from a bigger threat, and obviously weren't thinking. i don't think they would hire someone as thick as to jump out a window with deep thoughts about his preceeding actions.

Hmmmm Burn to death and then be crushed be tons of fallin cement, and steel...which is also on fire.....or....jump from a 50 story window and end it fast knowing there was nothing better to do.....JUMP...
Whether you kno it or not drowning and burning are the 2 worst ways to die mostly because you conscience for most of it...i mean after 2 stories your body is fallin as fast as its goin to go...the average man about 120 mph.....its called Terminal Velocity....that is how fast the earth's gravity is pulling you down....soo well you do the math....120 mph and you are falling hmmmm roughly 500 ft if it is from a 50th floor window.....vs...burning for how ever long it takes for the first to melt your skin then fry you bodies fat...then scorch your internal organs......i think i would jump Sorry for the Graphics |

They're are only so many choices you can think off, but some of my friends did actually see the whole thing happened. In fact one of them, he still remembers people jumping out of the building. His college probably five blocks away.
Now there can be jumping and then there can bodies that were falling from above. Humans still are animals and we will go to our most basic instinct to run and get away from danger when it comes to that point. |

Jump in hopes of landing on a nice, soft fat lady or anything soft, for that matter.
<begin sarcasm> Let's stay in the building with no chance of surviving because iron and concrete and glass and rock will be tumbling down on me, but we cant attempt to survvie byjumping outside. I mean, having a chance to survive is worse than having no chance at all. <end sarcasm> |

i think it`s ridiculous to talk about whether or not these people jumping out of the buildings were committing suicide or not... the way some people answer the question, you act like you know for sure their reasons for doing what they did.

ok sry for double posting, but we're not saying that we kno why each and every person jumped out, but seriously, i think that it's kind of disrespectful to them to say that they were trying to commit suicide if they weren't...

Nope. Atleast I don't think so. I think they jumped out windows to atleat have a chance for survival. Noway they were gonna live stuck in the towers...jumping would be the only option...the only chance you had to live, right?
It's like fighting for your life in that case...not throwing it away.. |

I would agree with it being a last alternative... But what gets me is why wasn't there any implemented plans to airlift those trapped in the floors above the fire...

well i'm a lifegaurd, and i know that when a person, or any animal for that matter, is dying or in danger of dying, the person has no control over themselves. they have a certain automatic response that just kicks in. in lifegaurding as an example, the one drowning sometimes pulls the lifegaurd underwater so that they can get above water, therefore drowning their own rescuer. so the people weren't sitting in their office chairs, thinking oh i think this building is going to fall down, i should jump out before that happens. some of them were on fire, or their floor was filled with smoke. i knew a guy who graduated from my high school who was there, working in the WTC when it happened, and he was in the 2nd tower. He was a few floors below where the plane hit, and he got out fine. but if you're burning alive, or if you can't breath, you go to where they're oxygen. it's a normal human response. i don't think half those people meant to end their lives... they were just trying to escape.

Yeah..... I agree with kathleen.... They are trying to GET OUT, welll, not suiciede, because suicide means:
1. The act or an instance of intentionally killing oneself. 2. The destruction or ruin of one's own interests: It is professional suicide to involve oneself in illegal practices. 3. One who commits suicide. |

i think the smoke clouded their judgement and they just jumped out in panick... or someof them actually knew they would die and did it rather than be burned to death...

i'm not really sure what you mean. do you mean were they trying to kill themselfves? well, i doubt it. i think that they were just trying to save themselves. even if the fall could kill.

i think many would have jumped for the reason to get out of the towers. others may have jumped because they felt there was no hope at all. i dont consider it attempting suicide

1) the people who jumped died BEFORE they hit the ground...at the height they jumped, with the factors involved, their bodies were killed in air from the speed of the fall
2) im a firefighter....burning to death is ALOT more painful than what they went through 3) that being said, I would have tried anything else over jumping....keep in mind, THEY DIDNT KNOW THE BUILDINGS WERE COMING DOWN. Noone, fire dept included expected the buildings to come down, or else the guys wouldn't havae been inside. 4) RIP to my 343 brothers ![]() |

okay, think about it a second, you're in a flaming building and you have thoughts swimming across your head, your loved ones, your children, and your friends. on top of that, your scared out of your mind, you have destruction everywhere, no one can get out. you dont know if another plane is coming or what the hell is happening. you just want a way to escape. and you see a window. a window that serves as an escape to get away from all of those thoughts. you take it. and you know you wont make it. but you're out and at the moment, thats all that matters. so now think about? is it suicide? i wouldnt think so, just a way to escape.

it would have been suicidal to stay. that would have meant certian death, while jumping atleast provided some hope, however little it may be. it was also a way of defying terroists [though that probably wasnt why] but stating you can not kill me. i would rather kill myself than die at the hands and mercy of you.
