What does "planet" means to you?
Yeah. Can you tell me in your own words? |

I've always doubted that Pluto was a planet..
QUOTE The scientists agreed that for a celestial body to qualify as a planet: * it must be in orbit around the Sun * it must be large enough that it takes on a nearly round shape * it has cleared its orbit of other objects Pluto was automatically disqualified because its highly elliptical orbit overlaps with that of Neptune. It will now join a new category of dwarf planets. That means that Pluto can't be a planet because it's orbit crosses Neptune's. And since a planet has to have "cleared its orbit of other objects", Pluto can't be a planet. By the way, this is a very interesting article regarding Pluto's planethood. |

The Earth should be at the center of the universe because that's how I learn it. Alligators are ornery because they got alls them teeth but no toothbrush, that's how I learned it. |

I don't think it's still under debate—the definition has been accepted, as far as I know. I think it's still being debated. QUOTE Stern said like-minded astronomers had begun a petition to get Pluto reinstated. Car bumper stickers compelling motorists to "Honk if Pluto is still a planet" have gone on sale over the internet and e-mails circulating about the decision have been describing the IAU as the "Irrelevant Astronomical Union". http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/5283956.stm Or at least, that's what I think that article told me.. |

Astronomers are still working on getting Pluto back as a planet though, if you read the article that I posted. MVECJSUPCU I've pretty much memorized the new order of the planets (including DPs). I have a way to memorize them, if you look in my sig! ![]() |

I believe in God because that's how I learned it. ![]() I suppose that's sufficient enough, but you'll have a more fulfilling religious life if you do some soul searching and learn theology for yourself. It's a pity, Catholic Forums are down due to maintenance right now, it would be a great place for a person who is a cradle Catholic as yourself. Oh, wait. |

^ You mean 2003 UB313? That's old news..
And why do you think Pluto should be a planet? If Pluto is later granted planethood again, tehn they'll definitely have to change the definition of a planet. |

when i'm old and ugly, i'm going to tell my grand nieces and nephews, "PLUTO IS A GODDAMN PLANET BECAUSE THAT'S HOW IT IS".
and it'll be pretty sweet to tell people that we lived in the time when pluto was considered a planet. |

I think Jonathan Hodgman (the dude who plays the PC in those Mac commercials) put it best.
http://www.comedycentral.com/sitewide/medi...ml?itemId=73493 The only strong arguement to keep Pluto as a planet is the sentimental one. If we make Pluto a planet, then we need to classify those other objects as planets. And you wouldn't want to have to memorize "My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizza Cars 2003 UB313 (Xena) AKA (Also Known As) Lesbian. |

And UB313 hasn't been officially named yet. Xena is just a nickname. QUOTE Although Pluto was discovered as a result of the search for Planet X, it is not considered Planet X. Nor is Kuiper Belt object 2003 UB313 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_X Pluto is smaller than UB313 and Earth's Moon. And I think it's supposed to be about 18% of Earth.. |

And it hasn't always been a planet. It's been a planet since I think.. 1930. |

Most teenagers who argue in favor of Pluto's planetary status do so at least partially in jest. So yeah, let's leave it up to those who actually care about science, shall we?
On a less relevant note... Kryo and Nate, what happened to your signatures/avatars? It looks as if they were produced by a Chinatown Sanrio store. |

It's semantics.
pluto could very well be a planet without adding the other three. It is in my book. why? well, the simple fact that it is nessicary to define what a planet is makes it purely semantics. There is no arguement over the tempurature water boils, becuase something happens. what's the mass at which a solar object becomes a planet? there is no set point. What they have defined is a simple set of rules, like, about how to tell if water is scalding. it's all semantics. there is no scientific reason pluto should not be a planet- planets don't have any greater effect on the solar system than other things, per mass. two weeks ago, they defined all the "dwarf planets" as full planets. why? it's semantics. there is no "where do you draw the line". Don't draw a line. admit or reject planets individually. no line is needed. stop seeking one. |

I honestly don't see the point in it at all. Whether we call Pluto a planet or dwarf planet is so unimportant it's ridiculous. It's not going to make a difference. Pluto's there, and it's not affecting us. The end.

Pluto's there, and it's not affecting us. The end. Well, I think it's a matter of pride. Pluto was the only planet discovered by the US, so people are fighting to keep it. At least, that's my opinion. |
