If you actually took the time to read... _dry.gif

QUOTE
Much-maligned Pluto doesn't make the grade under the new rules for a planet: "a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."

Pluto is automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's.

This really should go in News.
I have a topic similar to this, but it was a while ago when they were still discusing the 12 planet plan.

QUOTE
The scientists agreed that for a celestial body to qualify as a planet:

it must be in orbit around the Sun
it must be large enough that it takes on a nearly round shape
it has cleared its orbit of other objects

Pluto was automatically disqualified because its highly elliptical orbit overlaps with that of Neptune. It will now join a new category of dwarf planets.

Ha I just flashed back to my Regents where they showed Pluto's orbit overlapping Neptune's. It made me laugh because I got that question wrong, and now there is no Pluto.
They're going to have to change that "My Very Educated Mother JUst Served Us Nine Pies" thing.

NEPTUNE IS UNIQUE! It spins on it's side :)

I have to agree with science on this one. Now that they've got an exact definition for "planet", everything is organized. I always used to doubt that Pluto was a planet. It was too small! Even UB313 was larger than it!

And it is sad because it was the only official planet discovered by American Astronomers.

But it still hurts cry.gif It's just one of those things, I'm big on astronomy, I've loved that PLANET _smile.gif since the beginning of time. It is what it is though

I wonder how they're gonna set up the Earth Science Regents now..

I am very sure there is live on other planets. There probably used to be life on Mars 'cause there was proof that water used to be surface (oceans of it). And Europa (a moon of Jupiter), definitely. There's this very thick layer of ice on the surface, but there's supposed to be water underneath because there are volcanos under the ice. And there's oxygen on in the atmosphere (proved by spectroscopists and the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph). My guess is that it's thriving underwater.

And how come you have an astronomy class? My (future) high school doesn't have it.. The only reason I have an astrophysics class is because I'm in a program.
I wish public schools had astronomy _dry.gif

I just think this whole "Pluto" thing is incredibly stupid.

I mean who decides this stuff.

"All those in favor of kicking Pluto out of the list of planets, say AYE!"

"AYE!"

It was 2,500 scientists.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/5282440.stm

They finally decided to adopt the definition and so it automatically ruled out Pluto.
