My mom won't let me shave my legs... And I hate it.
She says I'm too young for it... She also says it's because it makes my leg hair grow faster and even thicker than before. Yeah, and to be honest, I have PE first period, and for the first quarter. In PE, I have to wear shorts. I really dont like to show off my beautifully hairy legs to other girls and guys. Is there some shaving technique or cream or lotion that'll make it so it doesn't grow back as quickly, and as thick? Maybe I can persuade my mom somehow to let me. Or does it really not grow back like that? |

Yeah, I think it does grow back faster and thinker.
You could use Nair or Veet or something. Maybe waxing it will work? |

Hmm, try waxing. Cause when i waxed my eyebrows, they dont grow back for like 1 month later, and they don't come back with like massive hair. It comes back normal. I only shaved my legs once, and when I shaved it, I didn't even know why I shaved it. I didn't have my leg hair to start off with. And then when it grew back, there was like twice as much leg hair. But compared to some other people, it't not bad. Now I never shave anymore. I just leave my leg the way it is. I'm afraid that if I shave again, it'll grow back like triple the amount.

my mom wouldn't let me shave when i told her i wanted to for the first time, but then she suggested Nair. you should try that.
shaving does make your hair grow back thicker and a little bit faster, but Nair prevent that for a while. |

Like everybody said, use either Veet or Nair which melts the hair but the results only last for a few days.

my mom used to say that too! but i started shaving but lately i havent shaved. it does grow back faster but not thicker. if your mom still won't let you shave, remember to talk to people in PE, so they will be too interested in talking to you then looking at your legs.

Shaving and more, a friendly how-to guide is pretty helpful.
As far as convincing your mom to let you shave, might be a brick wall. Have you expressed to her your fear of embarrassment? |

Ok, here's a suggestion that nobody said.
I couldn't shave till my sophmore year in highschool, my friends couldn't either. So we found a way that would please our mothers and please us a little. Why don't you try bleaching your hair! _Bleaching obviously damages your hair. _It makes your hair appear invisible. (but not invisible to the touch) _It makes mommy happy and you a little happier. You have to do touch ups here or there, but honestly, I was A LOT happier! -& mom too. I had A LOT of hair on my legs in middle school, then when I had the chance to do at 15, I ended up not having as much as I started off with (for some reason). So I assumed, that since bleaching does serious damage on your hair, maybe it damaged it so badly, some of it just fell off (or somthin'). You can purpose this idea to your mom and go with her at a drug store and look for bleaching cream for legs & arms. I suggest you wax when you're allowed to. I hate shaving! I hate "shaving-bumps." and I hate how it feels when my hair grows back. -itchy Before waxing, rub alcohol (rubbing alcohol-isopropyl) - it'll slow down the growing process of hair. -I learned that in Chem. LOL |

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I just have a few questions about bleaching.. 1. I have a tan. It's naturally tanned because i live in the desert, but yeah.. It's kinda like coffee.. but a bit darker. That color. I was just curious if even my leg hair becomes blonde, would it be somewhat visible? 2. The nearest drugstore is pretty far. >_> Umm.. do they sell it at Wal-marts, targets, or stores like those? ^^ Thanks. |

1. Well, it might show up. I'm not really sure.
2. Yeah. They sell depilatory creams at wal-mart, target, etc. I'd guess that any store like that has them. |

First off, thats a myth. Go search it on google and prove it to her..
Actually here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hair-removal/AN00638 You can get a hair removal lotion I suppose they would call it, just get nair or something. You apply the lotion and let it sit on your legs for 3-5 min. No longer than that and you take the bladeless razor and get it off your legs and then rinse your legs off with water. Also how old are you? Perhaps that will make us understand why your mom thinks your to young? |

It's true that it grows back thicker, but who cares? You'll have to remove it sooner or later. One year before or one year after doesn't make much difference. Use Veet.. it's a good one.

Hm, well, I guess I'm just one of those people who shaves. Everyone once in a while I'll use veet but to me it's kind of a hassle, like putting it on and waiting it out. lol.
When I wanted to start shaving, I asked my mom right in the store. We were in the right isle... and I was like "Hey mom, can I get some" lol... It doesn't grow back much thicker or faster. |

From what I'm reading, when you remove hair from your body, like from your legs, it looks thicker when it comes back, right? That's almost true. When the hair comes back, the part that comes just above the surface of your skin, the first part that you see and feel is the thickest part of the entire hair. Technically, your hair has not grown thicker, it's just your only seeing the fattest part. If you grew it out all the way, it would be exactly the same thickness as it was before you took your hair off. But I don't know why you would want to do that since this whole thread is about getting rid of hair. I just wanted to clear that up because one of my friends believed that shaving off hair makes it come back in thicker, so she said she was going to shave her head. I just wrote that in another thread. The 'come back thicker' is a myth. Maybe it'll convince your mom? |

^^ I always thought it was kind of weird when people would shave their arms.
This is girl I knew in 6th grade used to do it, but then her arms were like all shiney. And people would talk about her behind her back, 'cause guys thought it was weird. Sometimes when people shave their arms MORE hair grows... when it comes back. Weird. |

Thanks Listelle. now I think about it.. that makes a whole lot of sense. I can tell my mom that. =P She probably will let me do something about my leg hair afterwards. The lotion cream that removes it is sounding good to my mom. She's "thinking about it." hehe. bleaching is my next option if she says no. THANK YOU GUYSSS. XD Also how old are you? Perhaps that will make us understand why your mom thinks your to young? I'm thirteen >_> in 8th grade. rofl. I dont know if it's too young to be shaving because my other friends' parents seem to let some of them. |

My mom used to be the same way. Eventually, she let me, though. I think I was in 6th grade when I started.
Anyway, it's a myth that hair grows back thicker and darker. When you shave, you cut the hair at it's lowest and thickest point, therefore giving it the illusion that it's darker and thicker when it grows back. Everyone's hair grows at different rates. Mine, for example, grows quickly. I start to see stubble a day after I shave. I know people who can go a week without shaving and it doesn't look bad at all. But if I go a week without shaving, it's bad. It just depends on the person. |

NO DON'T USE VEET. i tried it before, and yes it's a lot easier than shaving or waxing or whatever, but it's scary. there's a reason they WARN you not to leave it on too long because there are so many harmful chemicals in veet. after i used it, my legs were scarily smooth [the chemicals!] and they could get bruised easily. shaving isn't that bad as long as you don't do it TOO often.

I use the Venus razor, and it's the only razor I'll stick with.
I've tried to use Veet, but it was horrible. It made my legs sting for about two days and there were red bumps on my skin. The worst part? It didn't work, at all. I had to revert to my old razor. The hair does grow back darker and thicker, but you're gunna have to start sooner or later. Waxing is an option, but it's costly and kinda painful. Go for shaving. There are some shaving creams that are supposed to reduce the growth of hair a tad. I believe Noxema has one. Personally, I use a Venus razor with Skintimate shaving cream. Those are the best, in my opinion. |

That's exactly how my mom is too, until she found out about hair removal cream.
I use Veet now, and the results last for a week or so. The hair does grow back darker, but not thicker. It's pretty sharp, though. |

shaving... it does make the hair grow back faster... try veet or nair and shave when you really need it... No, it doesn't. Gah. I think I've said this a million times in a million other threads... NOTHING can make hair "grow faster." An unhealthy or bad diet might SLOW hair growth, but there is no product, no razor, no nothing that can make hair grow faster. Period. Stop posting up "facts" that aren't really facts. And once again, shaving does NOT make hair grow back thicker or darker or whatever. Hair is the color it is due to melanin production and other things that are beyond our control. It only APPEARS to be thicker because the tapered off ends are cut off when you shave, thus it starts from the middle of the hair, but whoever tells anybody that hair gets thicker as it grows... is wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. |

I had the same problem last year when I was in gym, and I was totally self-concious all the time and finding ways to sit on my legs so people couldn't see them... It was awful.
Here's what you HAVE to do: Sneak some into the grocery cart next time you go shopping. Just find a way to do it. You won't regret it. Once you have them at home, you're home free! (No pun intended) |

I read this last night in the Girls Resource Center you should read it QUOTE It's just an illusion, according to Dr. Kitha Griffin, an Atlanta dermatologist. "New growth is often sharp-tipped and stubbly, depending on the removal technique," so it may appear bristly, she says. Hair grows independently, unaffected by anything external. Dr. Griffin adds that if this myth were true, all men would have thick dark beards. Taken from CNN Wikipedia restates this fact. QUOTE Some hold the belief that, once shaving commences, the hair will grow out more thickly. However, this bit of conventional wisdom happens to be false. The resulting stubble only makes the hairs seem to be thicker. Because a shaved hair has a blunt end (versus the tapered end of an unshaven hair) and because hair is often darker in color near the root, there is a widely held belief that shaving causes hair to grow in thicker and faster. Clinical studies have demonstrated that shaving does not have an effect on hair growth rates or density (see medical data below). exactly! I wish more people would check their facts before posting. A year ago, I would have thought that what they said was true, but taking Anatomy & Physiology really changed that. Ah, I love that class. |
