Has anyone read this book?
I was going to join this book club thing but I have to read this book, all the others I've read already and were actually fairly good. But I haven't read this book and from what I've seen it looks okay, but I was wondering if anyone else has read it?

I searched for a topic for this book and for any type of opinion on it and couldn't find one..

description:
Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that?
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

He also wrote another book to this called the pretties,

anyone read that as well?

ah well, i read the first few pages, and it seemed pretty well written I suppose. I like the whole concept of it. Although I kind of want to know what happens in the second book.

I suppose I should get it and read it though.

anyone else read it? or have a opinion of it?

It's not that bad at all! I'm about halfway - I love it so far. It's weird, though, because I keep imagining Peris as looking like Brandon Urie. blink.gif

GAH I CAN'T BELIEVE IT CUT OFF LIKE THAT. On top of that, my library didn't have Pretties. stubborn.gif DAMN YOU, WESTERFIELD. hammer.gif I liked it. Then again, I like most science fiction/Utopian society books. shrug.gif

Yea, my school library doesnt have like any books that I actually like

So I got to go to the book store to get the Pretties, I'll probably go ahead and get the Specials too.

I really liked the uglies, but as Kathleen said, I as well I like science fiction. -shrugs-

^Yea,
It starts out with the Uglies, then the Pretties, then the Specials.

no one read the Pretties
Its a great book, but if you really liked david in the first book [as much as me] you may not like the Pretties all to much. It made me sad sad.gif

Dudddeee. I read Uglies and loved it, I couldn't put it down. Then I read Pretties and same thing. I read the book in one day, I was homesick :). Now I'm half way thru Specials. AWESOME!

Yay Scott Westerfield.

But I agree, they say bubbly and all that a little too much.

It was pretty good. I wish some things had been clarified though, like what a pretty actually looks like. I got the impression that people could choose their own skin and hair color when turning pretty? blink.gif but i don't think that's right...

i haven't read the second or third book yet.

It was SO good!

Lol, I actually asked for this book for Christmas after reading this thread, so who says the internet isn't useful!!

I'm currently waiting for amazon to deliver Pretties and Special, as I nearly went into meltdown mode when i realized that it was a triology, and that there would be a cliff hanger.

Also, I am violently frustrated by Shay.

I didn't read it and skipped to Pretties.
And there is no "the" in front of the book titles.
I thought the story was okay, not that great.
I love Scott Westerfield's other series better, The Midnighters or something.

^You have to get the specials too! happy.gif I have all of them and read them all shortly after I made this topic last year pinch.gif

I use to take a copy of one of them to school everyday and get looked at oddly because of the book title. And then when they asked what it was about and you explained they looked you ever worse and told me to go to a different table XD.gif People aren't very accepting around here..

That will really happen by the end of the first book. I got really mad at Tally in the second book though, so much I had to quit reading the book. Shay gets better by the second book somewhat, I don't want to ruin it though.

it's not a masterpiece. Scott Westerfield isn't churning out classics. But his work is entertaining.

the uglies has a very nice premise, and a good plot, enough to engage young adult readers. the writing is geared towards readers in the teens, and it very good.

in all, this isn't a must read. but it's a good read.

It's a good read, but don't bother to actually buy the book. Just check it out from the library. Because i personally dont think it's worth it...even though I bought The Uglies and Pretties already like last year. pinch.gif mistake.

I've been reading The Pretties since like November 2006. It got kinda boring, so I stopped reading it...so I don't like it that much.

I read Uglies very recently and now I'm on Pretties.

Even though they had been described as being very good, I wasn't compelled to read them. I'm glad I have now, though. I can't wait to read Specials.

One long summer day i was watching a Twilight Zone marathon the old fashioned ones and i came across an episode where a girl is coming of age to become pretty, and shes fighting with her mom about why she cant stay the way she is. It was made in 1964...

and i figure Westerfield got his idea from this episode!

^I know exactly the episode you're talking about.

and, strangely enough, I thought the exact same thing when I saw it after reading Uglies.

Specials was a letdown, especially the ending.

I felt the beginning of uglies was a tad slow, but it picked up around halfway through, for me at least.

Either way, it keeps me busy on the eliptical, so yeah. I'm starting pretties now, I'm a few chapters into it, again it is a tad slow for me. I dunno, maybe I'm just tired so I'm not really getting into it.

has anyone else read this series??

i love it. i love how Scott Westerfeld created a slang and other social mannerisms for the characters. i want Bogus to Bubbly. i need to read his other books. So Yesterday is next on my list.

i heard they're making a movie... wonder what's up with that.

http://www.createblog.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=148442 / lol i made this topic I suppose I didn't realize how old it was >_>

;)

I love this book, I own them all. The Pretties kind of pissed me off though, it was really slow and it just made me mad >_> But I read all of them :)

idk about the movie, I mean back in 06' I saw they we're supposedly making a movie for this and I don't know what to expect if they do. When I was reading the book I could see everything perfectly in my head of how it should all look but I can see the movie being a real disappointment and I don't think I could take that for a book I really really liked back then.
