Is being shallow a sign of ignorance? Pauline and I were having a conversation about it, and we're not really sure. What are your thoughts on the matter?

According to Pile:
"Shallow is just hoenst. I like to look at beautiful things, and people are included. Appearance is the first thing you notice about everything. It's the most important sense to humans."

According to a douche bag (and I'm being kind) named Smiles:
"Philosophically, you are the biggest moron I know. You go through life only finding joy in the plastic things. Them things fade. And yes, shallow people are degenerate lower life forms."

xo, Pauline

f**k a shallow hoe.

There's more to life than material things; there's more to life than keeping up with the ratrace of physical beauty and there's certainly more to life than worrying about the lives of others.

I believe that those who are truly shallow lack intelligence or, at least, a good amount of common sense.

There are more to material things than what you give them credit for. Sure, a lot of material things are overpriced, and people are too caught up with their own physical beauty, but it's all just another art form. Think of a shallow person as an art critic rather than an ignorant f**k. you know?

Depends on the *shallow* person. Some people just aren't bright and come off as shallow. To me, the person that is intelligent and knowledgeable, yet still absorbed in only that which they can show, tell, smell, etc.. those are the worst of the shallow.

^i beg to differ.

when you're a shallow person, you only use your five senses to judge a person, meaning that you only judge them based on their appearence, the way they smell, etc. therefore, you are ignorant of what is beyond all that and you are potentially missing out on far more important things.

i agree. irl, when i first see someone criticizing another about their appearence/etc, i automatically sense some ignorance in them.

I sense ignorance in the fact that you're stating that all people who criticize others by their outside appearances are shallow. I'm the type of person who can tell someone they're not attractive, yet still get to know them. Yeah, I'm the kind of person who wouldn't normally start an intimate relationship with someone who I don't find physically attractive, but that doesn't mean I'm not aware of what kind of person they are.

Basically, what people are saying is that a shallow person is lacking knowledge of people's personalities because they don't ever look past the superfical features.

shallow is ignorant.

shallow people are close-minded. they're not open to other things.

shallow people find things appealing in their own eyes. if not, they'll just walk pass by it ...

Close-mindedness doesn't equate to ignorance, though. It simply signifies that a person has a shorter threshhold of interest.

Would you consider a person ignorant if they were close-minded, yet correct and successful about/in most facets of life?

Well, I wouldn't just go up to an unappealing person in dirty, ragged, worn clothes and say "hey how are you?" There's a certain limit, for me.

I mean, seriously. Would you like to wake up to a face like this?

Not talking to a dirty, ragged person who stinks isn't an act of being shallow. It's what 99.9 % of the world population would do. Not talking to a fat person because of his/her size is shallow and that is what I consider 'Ignorance'. I don't think you should judge someone by their physical appearance.

Not true, you asswipe. Truth is, A lot of the world is in a dirty, ragged, stinky state. Back where I used to live, I would come across a lot of dirty, ragged, stinky people, yet I wouldn't hesitate to give them a helping hand and say hello. You're such a f**king bitch. I hope your children face a poverty-stricken future living in the slums, all dirty and smelly.

In this case, close-minded is a choice. You choose not to be willing to know more beyond the person's looks. if something looks really ugly and ... crappy, they will just pass by it.

It isn't ignorance, it isn't wrong either. You see the picture at the top of the page, if I should see that man, I won't talk to him. He might be a beautiful person but the fact that he's dirty, he's got ugly teeth and he's scary is a turnoff.

That isn't ignorance.

Hahahaha! I may be shallow, but I don't have the audacity to f**k a mother unless she was the mother of my own children. And I have to apologize for earlier. My reply was uncalled for. Let me rephrase it in a more civil manner.
I'd like to point out that a large majority of the world population isn't exactly within the propriety of the higher industrialist nations. I mean, if you go anywhere with a less fortunate economy, you're bound to meet communities full of ragged, dirty people. To say that 99.9% of the world population ignores those people is a big understatement.

A shallow individual may or may not be ignorant. An ignorant individual may or may not be shallow. However, neither have a direct cause and effect relation. They may have a correlation, but that would just be coincidence. By definition, no. Shallowness isn't ignorance, and vice versa. In fact, I would imagine that a shallow person would be made even that more shallow by the reality of knowledge. If a person was physically ugly, yet their mind and personality were beautiful, and a person had perfect knowledge of this yet still rejected this person (even as a friend) merely on the basis of physical appearance, they would be the most purist form of shallow.

I'll have to stick with Hez on this: It's irrelevant.

Dude, I stressed my eyes just to read your post. Anyhoo, of course I exaggerated when I said 99.9 % but people who feel like that are in the majority. Maybe I'm thinking like this because I was brought up this way.

The picture that's on the top of this page prouves my point. If I should see that man IRL, I won't talk to him even if he was harmless, I'll freak out. I don't think that it should be defined as being shallow. People who were brought up in poor environnements are used to seeing people being dirty. That's a different issue, they are used to it.
I'm not used to seeing people badly dressed and dirty, it's going to be scary if I should see someone like that.

I think I would talk to him. Probably laugh and shake his hand. The guy is a superstar. He was really big on Howard Stern for quite some time. He's really awful, but he is infamous. I would talk to him, but for completly and utterly shallow reasons still. Interesting, huh?

Shallow
Main Entry: 1shal·low
Pronunciation: 'sha-(")lO
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English schalowe; probably akin to Old English sceald shallow -- more at SKELETON
3 a : penetrating only the easily or quickly perceived <shallow generalizations>

Sure. That's a shallow reaction.
But, here is the good news. You aren't generalizing his personality on his looks. You aren't saying he isn't a good person, or that he is a bad person. You're simply reacting to his unsightly appearance. Since you are simply penetrating that thin layer, you are commiting a shallow reaction, however, it isn't as morally objectionable as it could be.
