From Newsvine:
QUOTE
A 14-year-old girl who says she was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com sued the social networking Web site Monday, claiming it does not take sufficient steps to protect underage members.

The girl says a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.

Pete Solis was arrested in May on a charge of sexual assault of a child. He could not immediately be reached Monday evening.

The suit alleges that MySpace has "absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users."

"(MySpace) has got to take this seriously," said attorney Carl Barry, who is representing the girl and her mother. The suit seeks $30 million.

In a statement, MySpace said it is committed to the safety of its members.

"We take aggressive measures to protect our members," said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer. "Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world."

Tom is upset. I'd be upset if that girl wins. I hate it that they let 14 and 15 year olds be on myspace. I liked it better when it was 16 and up.

What a stupid girl. It's her own fault for letting someone who she thought was a 19 yr old get her number. First off, she's 14. If she set her age right, only her friends could see her profile, so if she added or accepted his request she brought it upon herself to give him her trust. How exactly did he 'assault' her anyway. Did they meet up ? What a dumbshit then. Meetin up with someone 5 yrs older than you who is presumably very strong ( for being on the football team ) and then going alone ( which i am assuming though )

The coffee lady won because McDonald's didn't have warning on their cups.

I think the person who sued McDonald's for getting them fat actually lost.

There's no way this girl can win. Myspace's TOS should protect them against it.

i heard something along those lines, then they had this other thing how they should just protect users more. Although most people just put in the wrong age so they can't exactly do it. Its pointless, if you allow your children on the internet and your paranoid then look over all the stuff your kids go at.

She won't win, because she's not allowed to be on myspace unless she's 16. She's clearly not.

Therefore, it is she who was breaking the law, and she can't say anything about myspace because she isn't supposed to be on it.

What a dumbass girl. Myspace isn't responsible for shit like that anyways.

You got a lot of freedom, you can put whatever you want.

They lie to get little girls cuz they can't get any as themselves.

For all we know, Tom may not be what he looks like, but he probably is, that's just an example.

Before myspace, a lot of people used Xanga, and plenty of them used fake ages

how is myspace any different??

whatever, she wont get 30 million because she was stupid enough to go meet someone.

the attourney is dumb as well

those were her actions, not myspace's fault.

f**kin 30 million dollars? shit, give her $50,000 and thatll be enough for her to go to therapy for this alleged story and whatever trouble she brought on herself. actually, i wouldnt even give her that. $30 million is WAY too much to get just for her own stupidity.

this whole thing reminds me of the lady who sued mcdonalds because well, GASP, her coffee was HOT and burned her tounge. although it does say "caution: contents may be hot" or w/e all around the cup, she won.

Number one, the restrictions on underage users are only as strong as they are made to be. Point being, that anything short of creditcard confirmation, there is no way to legitimize an age limit- and even then I've seen 12, 13 and 14 year olds with daddy's credit card. So, its her PARENT'S fault for not monitoring their child.

See...that's why I hate libraries and schools. They ban [censor] myspace. All because some stupid, immature little kid decided to ruin it for those of us who have to use the library facilities because we are without internet service.

I'm one of those who almost lives online- though I'm without internet service at home- and I LOVE Myspace. Get that? L.O.V.E. There is nothing better. It serves as a reliable way to keep in touch with those friends I never see, or my youth group, or my TEACHERS that I get along with- and yes, a way to find a possible relationship for those who know to work the internet properly. But people ruin Myspace because they use it improperly and with blind-sided IGNORANCE.

Number two...what in the blazes is a 14 year old wanting with a 19 year old ANYWAY?! Honestly. She should have known, if he was anything legitimate, 19 or not, he would want NOTHING to do with her. But no, there it goes again, easily coerced and brainwashed little kids, because parents don't teach their kids to recognize things like that.

We are becoming adults (for those who already haven't) in a technological REVOLUTION here, ladies and gentlemen, and we have to be aware of certain things: fraud, theft, scams, and effing STALKERS. If we don't , we're bound for almost CERTAIN DOOM. We need to raise our kids- [when we have them- and remember, young ones, be RESPONSIBLE]- to watch out for [not] physically real killers and theives, but for those in Cyberspace. More theft is done online, then anywhere in the physical world, because it is SO EASY.

So please, regardless whether you read my rant or not, please heed my warnings- KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN, and teach those around you to do the same.

/endrant

wow. that feels MUCH better.

And yes, I admit, I give my phone number out all the time online [see my signature], but

1.) Its my CELL.
2.) I own a business.
3.) I'm a legal adult and understand the consequences of my actions.

Its her own damn fault.

ok here it goes.

I hate dumbshit girls like this. It's her and her parents fault that this happened. Not myspace. I'm on myspace a lot...and I see these 12 and 13 year old girls dressing like sluts with provacative captions like " hit this" or whatever. They also post their adress, age, phone # and they're entire f**kin schedule for all to see. No wonder she got sexually harrased, she was probably being a slut. and she wanted to hook up with a SENIOR is high school...and she's 14!!!! WTF is the world coming to?

I can't stand these stupid people who think they can sue companies for their own stupid mistakes. What has the world come to? They should all kill themselves and remove themselves from the gene pool so we don't have to deal with their offspring's stupidity also.

I have to admit...I love myspace...it is a great way (as the person above me said) to keep in touch with people you don't see a lot and it also helps you get known if you have a band or whatever....but having these young girls dressing like strippers on there is just WRONG. but it's not like anyone can do anything about that.

Oh, and don't get me started on the "watch my cam" whores. They're even worse. They join some of the groups that I'm in and ar like "watch me watch me if you want to get horny" I'm lucky that the mods of the board ban them as soon as they join. AHH! It's too much. I really can't stand it. and I hate the fact that they ban them in schools. the libraries around here don't have it banned...but I have a feeling that they're going to if they hear another story like this.

So, heres my point. If the girls do everything to gt attention on myspace...and some guy rapes them...it's their own fault...allong with their parents for not watching their kids on the internet. I wish parents would care more about what their children are doing on the internet....after all, myspace is predator central....

If this keeps up...Imagine what will happen when the next generation will be runnig the country *shudders*

this whole thing reminds me of the lady who sued mcdonalds because well, GASP, her coffee was HOT and burned her tounge. although it does say "caution: contents may be hot" or w/e all around the cup, she won.

There wasn't a caution: contents may be hot on it, and she had a right to sue. She got third degree burns down her leg.

This is like that girl in seventeen magazine that had an article complaining because some guy she met online got her pregnant.

Meetin up with someone 5 yrs older than you who is presumably very strong ( for being on the football team ) and then going alone ( which i am assuming though )

yeah if you set your true age then your profile is private and also she is stupid for giving her # to someone she doesn't know

Why in the hell are some people so rude? Don't put me in the same spot as her. I'm nothing NEAR as stupid as she. I'm 18, going on 19 years old, I think if I want to put my number on my signature, I will. And prank calls, REALLY don't bother me because I don't answer restricted calls, ANYWAY. So...its not really that big of a deal. :)

first off, your age means nothing in terms of maturity and decisions you make. you could be 42 and still pull stupid stuff like this, hence her parents are helping her to sue so obviously they're not much brighter.

also, why would she need to "restrict" her number when you don't even know her or her number in the first place?

It may have been implied that the coffee would have been hot, but not hot enough to give someone third degree burns. Her coffee was at a much higher temperature than what it was supposed to be--like 30 degrees higher.

They also post their adress, age, phone # and they're entire f**kin schedule for all to see

See? Poor Tom tries to be nice to the annoying little children on MySpace who lie about being 16, and he lowers the age to 14. This is how he's treated?

Poor Tom.

Yeah, she won't win. Sadly, if she did, it wouldn't suprise me. If seen stupider cases win.

people keep saying that she isn't going to win but really, myspace is pretty well screwed. What are they going to argue? I think the case will come down to if myspace was really liable or not. Personally, I don't think myspace can be liable. It is kind of like someone buying a gun, shooting someone, then the one that was shot trying to sue the gun producer. I just can't see her winning but at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised.

Remember the good old days before Myspace. We never had any problems with xanga or livejournal or friendster.

There should be a myspace where during registration they ask for your drivers license number or like credit card info.

The parents blame myspace, I blame the parents.

I was wondering that too. I think it's because you have to write journal entries for your xanga or livejournal to go anywhere, and I'm guessing that teenage girls are more concerned with posting pictures of themselves than actually writing.

The suit alleges that MySpace has "absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users."
What, so that automatically means that MySpace has to watch your every move and try and catch you everytime you give your phone number to a stranger?

What a stupid girl. She must have lied about her age so that her profile wasn't set on private, and it's her fault for being so stupid as to give a stranger her number. Like it matters if she thought he was under eighteen--she still didn't know him.

It's girls like her who cause my dad to declare myspace as unsafe and block it--not that I can't hack my way through the parental controls, but still.

has anyone yet on this topic taken the side of the girl? haha.
well whether you like myspace or not, it's still dumbass shit to sue them. it really doesn't matter what you're on. write now i could post my number and address. i could go on aim and tell everyone. and i could do that on ANY website i wanted!!! it's not myspace's fault that happened. because no matter what site you're on, it's the user's responsibility to be protective. myspace isn't the only site where kids talk to strangers. so myspace shouldn't be blamed for the situation. this is probley mean, but i hope kids give that girl hell when she goes back to school for being dumb and not taking the blame for it and instead sueing myspace.

Wow, well let's see....Myspace will never be able to completely be safe so anyone who is wishing for that....Sorry, its not happening. And why did this girl even talk to this "19" year old? It's not myspace's fault, It's the actual person who begins this line of meeting the old man who hasn't had sex for like 15 years.
