I read about that in a book but it said that sneezing occurred in the final stages of it and they said it because they knew the person was about to die.

I usually just say bless you on occassion. I rarely say it to strangers.
When someone coughs, I usually mutter, "oh thanks," or "great," or "how wonderful," because they usually near me and don't cover their mouth
