Has racism ever had an effect on you?
Not just being called racist slurs, but actually being limited in some way because of race.

Something like this happend to my parents a few years ago.

I know my parents went to some foriegn store our of the U.S. (Rome I think it was) and stood in line to buy some things. When it was my parent's turn, the cashier ignored then but, continued serving people that were even behind my parents. My parents didn't get helped until my father complained. It was supposedly because my parents are Filipino.

I have no problem with any other race then mine..
But I do think twice.. If im walking down the street in the middle of the night there there were two roads to go down and one had some "punk" black dude on one road.. and there was a plain white dude down the other I think I would go down the white person's road.. I hope that doesen't make me racist.. Like I said I have no problem with black people. >.<

I'm half black, 1/4 chinese and 1/4 italian. My whole life is a mess of racism. I've always been too white for the black people and too black for the white people. I never quite fit in because people assumed by my skin and hair that I was something I wasnt. Damn them all. Even my family is that way. My white cousin wasnt allowed to date black guys, but its like hello, I was made because of a black person. Its so wrong. I wish I wasnt stuck in the middle.

Racism effects everyone, I think.
My school is made up of 96% of white people so it's not like I know tons of people that arn't white.
(( Don't get me wrong though, I have cousins that are mixed, along with my best friend.))

I understand about the whole choosing sides of the road thing from above. I would probably choose the white side too just because it's my race and I'm growing up used to it that way. It's a very tough and sensitive topic for many people.

I remember this one time, about a year and a half ago, my family and I went to Applebee's or some place like that, and waited for the person to get us a table.

Well, we were waiting and waiting, and when it was our turn, the waitress completely ignored us and instead, walked around my family, and seated a family of white people who were waiting behind us, right in front of our eyes. We were all upset, but we didn't say much until we noticed that another Filipino family was waiting for a long time too.

My dad went over to talk to them to see how long they've been waiting for and why. Apparently, the same thing happened to them. So my dad stepped up to this waitress and confronted her, which resulted in talking with the manager, and getting her into trouble.

Good thing though: My family and the other Filipino family got free dinners. _smile.gif

In a way.
When I was at Abercrombie with my dad a few years ago, the girl at the cashier asked for our zip code, and my dad pronounced the zeros as 'yeros'. She started giggling and then I stared at her and she ceased.
It's sad having heavily-accented parents. mellow.gif

Word...
I get called "chink" all the time. It's awfully annoying.
It's because racist white people have hard time telling the difference between different Asian nationalities. Which has also helped created the Asian stereotype: "All you Asians look the same."

There has been many "have you been a victim of racism" in createblog. i made one myself a couple years back when roxy and trish were still here, and the conclusion was that racism can't be stopped.

i live in a town where mostly whites dominate. the blacks who attend the school are usually from the city and have to wake up at 4 or 5 to get here so they can get a better education.

the first racial remark i cared about was in 7th grade by this really annoying kid. since then, i think all the guys who think they're "tough" decided to be prejudice. they all called me a chink and a gook and shouted stereotypes such as asians can't drive. i got racial remarks almost every day.

so here i am, in highschool, and i STILL get made fun of because of my race. the other asian people from the other middle school can back me up, that they've been discriminated too. you don't see other white people getting made fun of, only the asian people.

i've lived in towns where there are mostly white people my whole life, except for this one town (which everyone calls will be the next chinatown) and kids as young as 8 would be going "ching chong chang" and all that sh*t.

it pisses me off, but if you cared a lot, you could probably report it to the school as a hate crime or harassment.

It is. Why don't you come take a trip here to understand how bad racism f**king is you white piece of dog sh*t. I doubt whites wouldnt be racist if I lived in a town with majority of the asians living in it, because they can always back me up. The town I'm living in, it's like 95% majority of the whites here. I understand you even though I'm black. My school's full of Arabs and I tend to be very VERY VERY very self-conscious. It's like a reflex or something. However, I've not really faced racism because I'm half black and white. The full blacks and whites face racism every day, mostly from Arabs. It's terrible down here. Asians get laughed out because of their "facial looks". People do weird things to their eyes, just too make fun of them. One of my friend said "oh, you mean the chitong" and I almost had a heart attack.

Racism sucks.

I've been called plenty of racist slurs when I was in elementary school and middle school. I think I may have experienced something like that. I was at a store where there's one line. I was standing closely behind customer the cashier was helping because no one else was in line and she was the only cashier. Then, when it was my turn the cashier tells me that I wasn't in line and the woman who appeared behind me agreed.
I don't know if that was a race thing but it was ridiculous. I was definitely there first!

I'm really lucky to be living where I am. My school is really diverse, and I haven't had any blatant problems with racism in my city. We've pretty much become used to being around people of all different nationalities.

However, I do remember when I was in 4th grade, this girl told me that since I'm a Filipina I must eat dog for dinner. That hit me pretty hard. Racism hasn't really been a big issue for me since then, though.

other asians???i think...well an example would be in Japan. Filipinos are being discriminated in Japan for trying to get a better life or a job to support their family back home, in Japan.

I've had my shares with racist people back in Elementary and today still. Middle school was the worst. It was, I would say at least 80% Latinos. 15% asians(14.2% if you don't count Filipinos as asians), 3.6% Black and the rest white. Well, when someone started beef with me, they would call me "Stupid Chino," "Pinche Chino", well you get the idea, no love. I would talk back and embaress them in front of their so called "homiesl." And I keep telling them, "Filipino, not chino, get it right!". And my eyes aren't even that slanted or chinky. Reasons I got in alot of fights, but never suspended, coz its never my fault. Ever since day one of middle school, i've been picked on along with my other friends who were asians. Not all the Latino students were picking on me, only the ones acting hard with their "crews." I had mexican/chicano friends who also hated those people being racists, and pretty much backed me up even when I didn't asked them to. Some of them were also in crews, but their not ignorant, stupid, racist, assholes, who think their tough coz their crew would back them up.

Yeah quite a lotof times actually. At this Italian restaurant, when we go in, we're really the only Hispanics in there and everybody just turns around and gives us looks. The our waitress wouldn't ask for our order but actually went to attend two other tables that came after us. They were .. white. I feel so uncomfortable when i got to that place. I don't say a word.

My sister and I once were talking in Spanish in a club because we didn't want people listening to our conversation when some white girl beside us was like "WTF? We're not in f***ing Mexico! Talk English, you f***ing Spics!" After that, my sister broke her face.

We weren't even Mexican. We're Chileans. I have nothing against Mexicans but being called something else is really offensive.

I've had many experiences. My neighborhood has mostly black and hispanic people. I'm from the west indies, but i'm really light. When I'm coming back from school I have to pass by this auto shop and sometimes the highschool kids who work there will make annoying remarks.
The school I go to contains mostly koreans, chinese, and whites. To them I'm black and I live in the "ghetto". One of my closest friends constantly makes fun of me. She says things like, "Your ghetto brothas and sistas must be so proud you're one of the smartest kids in a cracka school", "did you say hi to your ex-convict today?", etc. I used to find it annoying, but now I just ignore it.
I know some of my asian friends who wont talk to the black kids at school and some black kids who call my asian friends chinks. I'm often caught in the middle and it's always uncomfertable.

she acts like it's a bad thing though.
it's annoying,if anything.
oh well,

i usually don't have any issues with racism unless my friends are kidding around but most of my friends are asian too so were basically making fun of each other

there is one time that sticks out to me tho

my sister and i went to atlanta bread company to eat and there was this girl who worked there and she took our order and my sister ordered a soup but she gave her the wrong one so my sister wanted it changed and lik two seconds after my sister gets back to our seat i see the girl and her boyfriend talking and starring at us and they pulled their eyes back and made them look "chinky" and then they both cracked up

and not to be steriotypical or w/e but most asians are racist towards white people and mexicans

First off, I am white. Racism has affected my life. My son is 1/2 black - 1/2 white. I adopted him and he is most wonderful. My sister has a 1/2 black daughter. (biologically) We live in Texas - when my niece was a baby, there were small towns that were awful (BOWIE Texas) People would see the stroller go to smile at the baby - see the baby - look shocked and then up and my sister in fury. My niece is now 18 and she is the most wonderful person. I love her and am closer to her than any of the other nieces and nephews (who are all white)

Oh, btw, once I was at Luby's (cafeteria) with my son and this old white man kept staring at us. You know the looks. Looks of disgust. Outside he muttered the N word. Called me a N-lover. Not that I cared what he said to me, but I did not want my son to hear such crap. I went off on the old man. I basically told him that I wish he and all the other old white racists would die. The world would be a much better place when all the old racists are dead. I think the younger generations are more accepting and less racist.

Racism makes me sad, and I have to say many times I am not proud of the white race. I am not always proud to be white and most of the time wish I was not. I don't want to be sterotyped as a typical white person. It sucks for people to automatically think you're something you aren't.

Love and peace to the world!

i think it has an affect on people whether they realize it or not. At my school it's not as bad, but it's still the south. i consider myself a loner because a lot of people label me as a troublemaker at first sight, or your "average black kid that speaks in slang, listens to gangsta rap, and is gonna end up nowhere". For instance, i few days ago i was in class and we were playin jeoprady( that's how we reveiw for tests, there were three teams) and one of the categories was middle names. My middle name came up and some one of my friends from another team got it right. Afterwards, one on my team members says " that's easy, he's black". it kinda confused me because their was another guy( he was white) whose middle name was alot similar to me, so it made me think what possesed him to say such i thing?

btw, this kids like really rich and conceited-like so mybe that me have an influence on the situation, but it still made a littl upset.

I've bee discriminated against in many situations, and sometimes I feel awkward being the only minority among my friends. I'm half Japanese, 1/2 Brazilian

Throughout school in America, things were quite odd. People didn't know what to label me as. In fact when racism was a topic in a class one, everyone's eyes sort of shifted towards me. Most had assumed I was African American, but that was something I wasn't aware of. Then adter I had finally made a friend, we were talking about ethnicity and after it was my turn, everyone gave me that same shocked look. It was then revealed then they thought I was African American. I was somewhat taken back myself, but continued on.

In another situation there was a bake sale, and a white man approached the table, and I politely offered him some of the items along the table. He said no, then as my back was turned I heard him mutter N***** and then o buy something from a less enthusiastic white student, coincidentally one of my friends. Most of the time, I can let stuff roll off my back, but I nearly broke down in tears, then anger built up in me, wanting to decapitate him. But I held that in until later on.

And that is just a sample of things throughout my life.

i've experienced racism, but not like what your parents went through. mainly just racist slurs, but it's just as bad in my opinion.

especially growing up where the majority is white. i hate growing up with racism everywhere. but it has also made me a more stronger person, and more aware. help others with it too.

Whoa what a pretty mixture.
But I feel you.. I'm half black and half filipino. I remember one day my parents went fishing and we went to some hicky town down in Texas. We got our nice boat, and we put in the lake. When I notice, the place was filled with confederate flags. And some fat white guy came out of his rv or whatever, and said to us you need to get out, you can't catch no fish. Man and still they're people like that, I wish one day they woulr realize the world change.

I am 1 of 3 white people at my school... out of like 30-40 students.
But I dont mind it, everyone is awesome..

Once this lady came in and wouldnt let me do her hair cause I was white...
I was extremely offended. But other than that it hasnt really affected me, because Im not really around it at all.

Yes, it has. Well I'm 25% chinese; when I was little was mistreated by teachers who were racist to asians. She called me a chinx. I didn't know what it meant until later.. from then on i didn't want to be asian I felt really bad. Now I just look really filipino, because after thinking it was bad to be asian every day i kept practicing to open my eyes as big as i can. But now I miss my asian eyes. wink.gif Pretty weird huh, when we're all young we do stuff we wouldn't want to do when we grow up.

Thankfully, I haven't been much affected by racism up 'til this point of my life.

I know most of the Middle-Easterners and South-Asians who live in Hong Kong are discriminated by most HK people, but I don't.

I am an 18 year old Pakistani-American. I have been in this country since I was 10 years old and have no accent, know the english language well, I understand the culture and know everything there is to know about NY and NJ. I am working 3 jobs right now to try to better my standards of living. Currently I retain, after paying taxes and house payments, somewhere around the neighborhood of 45k. Now I am thinking its time for me to get a new car, since I drive a 1993 Mazda MX-6 LS right now (great GREARTTTT car, but not really something that I would wanna drive everyday). On Monday I saw this AD for a Prosche 944 Cabriotlet and me being a huge Proscha, I wanted to buy it right away. I called the owner of the vehicle and talked to him over the phone. He sounded very pleased with my knowledge of the car and said, "I would love to pass on my baby to you." I was real excited. I then set up an appointment with him to come look at the car the following morning. Everything worked out great over the phone. On tuesday around 12pm I left my house and drove the 80 miles to get to his place. When I got there I was greeted by a wonderful lady (the porsche owner's wife). The lady showed me the car and explained to me the details of it. We then waited for the husband to come back from the store for about half hour and during that time I was then invited into the home and I sat around drinking some coffee. The husband arrived 30 minutes later. As soon as he walked into the door he asks, "Honey, who the F*** is this dez in my house?" I stood up and looked at the guy, I was shocked. He stared dead into my face with grave anger. I took a step towards him and exted my arm, "Hi, I spoke to you over the phone about buying that wonderful car." You told me to come by and look at it today. I have to say sir, I would love to buy it." He walked away from me towards the kitchen and yelled out, "Hey, tell this guy that car ain't for sale and to get out of my house, I got things to do." The turned and looked at the wife who seemed as shocked as I was. She looked at me and apologized for her husband and told me to please give her a call back about the car after she had spoken to the husband. I told her I understood that some people can be really stupid and its not her fault, she did not need to apologize to me.

People like that really upset me. I mean I am a very responsible individual. I can do everything he can and probably tons more. Why should I be looked at like I am not even worth someone's time?

Crap... blink.gif Some people need to look beyond appearance. I know I have to do that a lot.

I don't want to, but I discriminate against Mexican people sometimes. I do have some reasons to be prejudiced against them, like for example, the guys who did the tile in my house tried to steal some stuff out of my bathroom and also broke a doorknob and vaccuumed it up to hide it. ermm.gif

But I really don't WANT to be prejudiced towards anyone. Hopefully I'll grow out of this...

Yea, I understand. Sometimes you just cant help it. The place I work at makes me have a sterotype against mexican americans. I work with more then 20 of them and not a single one can speak clear english. I mean the only reason it makes me angry is, you are in this country trying to make a better life for yourself, why not work a little to learn the language.

I can't say that's a big reason to stereotype people, 'cause I don't know much Spanish (I'm supposed to learn it though before college) and I think we U.S. citizens should try to learn their language too.

But I know that it is irksome. They must have their stereotypes for us too, I'm sure.

I do have many nice Mexican American neighbors and it helps to remember that they don't fit the stereotype very well.

It's because racist white people have hard time telling the difference between different Asian nationalities. Which has also helped created the Asian stereotype: "All you Asians look the same."

Exactly... At my school, which is majority of Blacks and Hispanics. they always be calling me chinks or chinita and whatnot. It used to bother the heck outta me. But now I`m used to it, anytime they call me chinese or whatever. I call them wetbacks or african american. laugh.gif

Like I said I have no problem with black people. >.<

Well maybe you should think a third time...that scenario was not balanced at all..."punk" vs. plain... thumbdown.gif ...and stereotyping is a subtitle of racism...never doubt the unexpected...that "plain" white man could have done something to you...worst that that "punk" black guy... with a bias world...he would have gotten away with or lesser charge...did you think twice about that...you just basically stated that you fear black people...why? Half of my life I grew up in a all black community and the second half in a all white community...the only difference is that black people are more hostile cause of situations like this one...they want to be accpeted as an equal individuals...breathing and living like the next...the actions are rebellious...like a 15 year old in their rebellious stage when there parents treat them lesser like a child...if you don't have a problem why comment on it?! Brush it off your shoulders and keep it moving...

By the way, I thought this was experiences, not personal opinions...if you comment about this you obviously have something in the back of your mind that you're covering up...if you're not racist...then there is nothing to comment!

MY EXPERIENCE

I moved to the suburbs in my early pre-teens. In middle school I had a teacher that failed me in every project that I did in her Social Studies class. My parents were concerned because my mom was very active in my studies...she told my mom that I wasn't doing my homework...which my mom knew was a lie because she would help me with my work and I was a honor student for everyother class and teachers loved me. Once I had the best project in the class (even the principal agreed) and she still failed me. She just would not give in. In high school my chemisty teacher gave me a D- on a lab that was done with my lab partner and he got an A and we did the same exact lab...one of each material needed for the experiment...so we had the same results from that one experiment...but I failed...every other paired partners had the same grade. My mom wrote to the Superintendent, School Board, Principal of my school and to the Science Director. He kept that grade and never gave a logical reason why he failed me and gave my partner an A. He also gave me harder test then the rest of my classmates...after a test we would talk about some of the hard questions and they would say...that wasn't on the test...and I would always wonder why he would not give tests back..he would just call us by name and we would go to his desk and he would show us our grade on the front page (like a cover) of our test where we signed our names. At the end of the semester when he gave us a folder of our tests, that's when I compared tests with a a few people and realized I had different tests. All the other teachers loved me. I was an All-American student...A's and B's, captain of my sport, involved in alot of activities, graduated with honors in the top 30 of my class. But I passed anyway..that was the only semester that I got honorable mentioned instead of my usual back and forth highest or just honors...it's wasn't a big deal...I had another incident with the high school principal when I first switched from private school to public schools...but that's another post for another day...

I face it everyday. But I don't let it affect me like that. Instead, I use it back against them. If some white guy came up to me and started calling me a chink, then I'll f**king go crazy and just start shooting up the "Honkys", and the "Crackers" and what not. SO yeah, it affects me, but It also affects them.

"and who are asians mostly racist against?"-Everybody.
But who are white people mostly racist against? Everybody
Who are black people more racist against?-Everybody.

It's just a thing with human nature. But with me, EVERYBODY gets affected.

yea ... I dont really get out of shaped when some one calls me a racial slur like chink. but like Ajhuss said that he talked over the phone and had a conversation about a car and then i go over his house and he starts calling me a chink.. I would probaly bash his porche in if his wife wasnt there...

And no u shouldnt start calling other people racial slurs jsut because they do it to you.It just doesnt solve anything....

And yes alot of Chinese people are racist(Me being chinese) because its just in our culture and ancestry. If you know about chinese history The chinese are very isolated people in the past. They thought they were suprior to others and think of outsiders as barbarians and cavemen if british didnt defeat china I think china would still be isolated....Well anyways I dont think american born chinese are racist only they parents but asian parents have a great affect on their kids because of the strictness and even though they teach us not to be racist you would hear a racial slur come out of their mouth once in awhile

sorry if that was a confusing paragraph lol(im tired)

being a classical musician, there aren't too many minorities in the "orchestral classical music world." my community orchestra had white, asian, and indian people in it. i was the only black person for FOUR YEARS. all through high school. and it doesn't help that a majority of the people are from a stuck up city [city is stuck up as a whole]. i have had KKK jokes told to me by trombone players i have been tormented to the point where i had to go to the conductor. well, i made it to third chair in my section [viola] and they couldn't say nuthin then. they didn't even give me ANY recognition for being in their organization. i don't go to their concerts, but every once in a while i see some of the nice people that were in this orchestra, and i talk to them.

Thank goodness no.
In general, the places I have lived were more open-minded communities than some other places, so encountering actual, full intent racism has been very rare for me.

Nah not really. Though I am white. I grew up in an area of houston called Alief where it was pretty ghetto, and now live in a upper-middle class area called Sugar Land. I've always managed to get along with blacks, asians, indians, hispanics no problem. My high school was about 51% asian, 47% white, and I forget the other percentages. Of course asian encompasses oriental, indian, and pretty much anyone from asia.

I actually prefer company of asians sometimes, as I find them smarter, nicer, and funnier. Hell, my girlfriend is Chinese. Of course I have racist thoughts, but they aren't all negative. A lot are seen on the positive side.

Not personally, but I've seen it happen around me and it bothers me.
I've noticed many people (very generally speaking) try to keep to their own ethnic group around here though....they like to congregate together.

My whole school is probably made up of 90% of white people. acism really hasent affected me. Im white and from the suburbs around Detroit in a high class area I guess but im use to seeing blacks and well you get use to it after awhile.

Some of you people are starting to talk about how everyone catigorizes asians/koreans/chineese into just chineese I mean yeah I know the difference between asians/koreans/chineese/japineese/phillipeans and whatever but alot of people dont because, well, the truth is that most of them, do look the same.

^Yeah I noticed that too.

QUOTE(kykip @ Jun 13 2006, 01:35 AM) *

Wow, sorry to hear that that happend to you. I would ahve punched those teachers in the face.

My sister is half black/half white. Our mom is white and her dad is black. When she was little people always asked us if she was adopted. It hurt my mom alot to hear people ask that. But now things have gotten better. I think its pretty sad though that her dad doesnt want to have anything to do with her. Pretty much the only father figure that she has had in her life is her godfather and he passed away last May, a couple of days after my high school graduation. But she and I are extremely close.
I hate when people are rascist. Especially since 95% of my friends are black. So I really dont have a problem with what color someone is. I dont look at the color of someone's skin I look at their personality and how they approach people.

I'm racest against my own race. does that count? I'm WHite/pale (whatever you prefur) Irish and i hate that fact. The white Irish have done nothing but make things more difficult in northern irland. but besides that, ive only had a few run ins, but ever since i moved to the US, its been fine
