QUOTE
Actress Dana Reeve, who fought for better treatments and possible cures for paralysis through the Christopher Reeve Foundation, named for her late actor-husband, has died. She was 44.

Reeve died late Monday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center of lung cancer, said Sean Dougherty, a spokesman for the foundation. Survivors include a teenage son, Will, and two stepchildren, Matthew and Alexandra.

"On behalf of the entire board of directors and staff of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, we are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us," Kathy Lewis, president and CEO of the foundation, said in a statement.

Reeve had announced on Aug. 9 that she had lung cancer.

Christopher Reeve, the one-time Hollywood "Superman" turned activist for spinal cord research after a horse-riding accident in 1996, died Oct. 10, 2004.

Dana's mother died shortly afterward. Then in August, Dana announced she had inoperable cancer.

"Just when you think you're coming out and you think, 'OK, I see the light at the end of the tunnel,' then I got this diagnosis in the summer," Dana Reeve said at a cancer fundraiser in New York last year. I've been responding so well to treatment, and the tumor is shrinking and shrinking and shrinking, so it's a big sigh of relief, and I feel good."

Dana Reeve was a constant companion and supporter of her husband during his long ordeal and his work for a cure for spinal cord injuries.

She was chairwoman of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, which funds research on paralysis and works to improve the life of the disabled. To date, it has awarded $55 million in research grants and $7.5 million in quality of life grants.

She was performing in the Broadway-bound play "Brooklyn Boy" in California when she had to streak home to reach her husband's bedside before he died. She gave up the role for the New York run.

Reeve also served on the boards of The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, TechHealth, and The Reeve-Irvine Center for Spinal Cord Research and as an advisory board member to the National Family Caregivers Association.

CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Kaledin reports that Reeve's was one of those rare cases of lung cancer in people who've never smoked. Doctors say only ten percent of non-smoking women and up to 20 percent of non-smoking men get the disease.

She received numerous awards for her work, including the Shining Example Award from Proctor & Gamble in 1998, an American Image Award from the AAFA in 2003. In 2005, the American Cancer Society named her Mother of the Year.

She is also survived by her father, Dr. Charles Morosini, and sisters Deborah Morosini and Adrienne Morosini Heilman.

I just watched Barbara Walters talk about it on the View. I almost cried. I really admired her, for loving her husband so much and being devoted to humanity in general. Now Christopher and Dana are reunited in a land of eternal rest. I hope they're happy.

But I do feel sorry for their youngest son, who's only 13. What will become of him?

It's like Johnny and June Carter Cash. They were soul mates and after she died, he was devestated. Then a few months later, he followed her into passing.

At least they're together again.

You beat me to it. I was totally reminded of them when I heard of Dana Reeves' passing.

She was an amazing and courageous woman. My heartfelt condolences to their family, to the world for losing such a wonderful person.

I feel so bad for her son. That's an absolutely horrible thing for a 13 year old to experience so early on in life.

on sum real shit... f**k this bitch!

why is it that one stupid lady who hasnt done shit dies from lung cancer and now theres all this talk about wat needs to be done about it...

thousands of ppl die from AIDS every WEEK in this country and all u ever see are stupid - gay ass lil commercials on MTV tellin u to get tested... wtf? are u serious? maybe what we need is a respected white celebrity in entertainment to die from AIDS i guess then we'd see alot more attention given to it...

i never encourage death nor take it lightly and i dont mean to disrespect Dana Reeves but its shit like this that pisses me off about our f**ked up country that i love
