My IT teacher told us today that the school has decided to giv econsideration to WRITING HOME TO PARENTS about the contents of people's blogs.

wtf?

my friend kate and i were about to have afull blown argument with the teacher about it, were it not for rae sitting behind us chanting 'calm'.

apparently it is part of their crackdown on bullying. and, because some of the younger students were READING THE BLOGS OF THE OLDER STUDENTS and 'getting ideas'

there is a 13 year old prostitute at my school. i think its a bit late to worry about f**king bad influences from older years.

*roar of rage*

oh. i suppose you can discuss this, to give it some direction. i just wanted the rant

Giving youngerr students ideas isn't even bullying, especially if no one is requiring anyone to read anything else. You didn't mention that bit to me. That';s even more ridiculous. That doesn't even make sense.

That pisses me off so much. I think its violating our free speech rights. If you don't do it at school, then they should stay out of it.

That's pretty dumb, but there are some pretty awful things written on blogs. Moving this to the school forum.

Yen, don't use "gay" as a derrogatory adjective near James. He bites.

Schools blocking blogs and sending home parents notes about them are entirely different things. My school blocks them all (it's been a while since I last tried to get on, but I heard that even my way of getting on xanga has been blocked now. Pity.) but to write a note home to parents about them is nuts. Like we really need them to get more ridiculous opinions on things. Make the paranoia worse. Yes. Great idea.

This is a little bit different but oh well.
In my school last year, a girl started a xanga where everyday she would write mean things about a different person at our school. The xanga also included a "Cool People List" in a left module. It was really cruel and a lot of people got hurt from it. One of the girl's parents found out and called the school. It took a LONG time to track down who made the site but she got in trouble from the school because of it. It's hard to tell where the line is between what is the school's buisiness and what isn't, but I'm glad the school stepped in because otherwise it would have continued. So I guess it all depends.

wtf? that sort of happened 2 years ago at my school. instead, what the administration and the principal was doing was, that they would go read people's blogs, and if there was "explict" content or "illegal", i.e., underage drinking/clubbing, they threatened to give those students detention and have conferences with their parents.

what outrage.

Yea I recall I a blog incident at my school last year.
Two girls in my year were playing around and took pics while pretending to be lesbians for fun (they really weren't)... and they posted the pics onto one of the girl's xanga; then a student from our school saw those photos and reported it to her teacher. I didn't know what happened to them in the end... but we had to write and discuss what we thought of online journals in homeroom period. -___-

Ughhh I hate that. I'm glad my school hasnt done that...yet. That's pretty much getting into our personal lives which isnt a part of our school life, so they shouldnt be concerned about what we have on there. Most of the kid's parents at my school know we have blogs anyways, so it wouldnt change much. Our school has Xanga blocked, but I think that's all.

Heh. That's happening right now for me. They're actually printing out people's MySpaces and sending them to their parents. It doesn't have any effect on me, because I don't have a MySpace, but I don't think it's right.

That is pretty rotten. I'm glad I'm not in high school and I don't have to put up with that kind of stuff anymore. Colleges actually encourage free speech.

There was a senior at my old high school who in big trouble last year for stuff he wrote on the Internet. He was nearly sued, and the local police even launched an investigation. Arguably some of his posts bordered on libel, but it was all in good fun—except for the targets of his jokes, I guess.

At my university, there have been a few reports of students getting in trouble for pictures they posted on Facebook, though, although the administration claims that those reports are untrue.

Yeah, i go to a private school and my school hasn't done anything like that yet, but another private school nearby has basically been giving people detention for HAVING myspaces.

Well not quite detention, but teachers will constantly ask them to stay after class and talk to them about it.

by school codes, they ususally can't do anything if your content is distributed from outside of 20 feet from the school.

since your home computer is more than 20 feet from the school, they shouldn't be able to do anything.

but there's also that thing where they can punish for anything that happens outside of school if it disturbs school in any way. In 8th grade, this guy stole someone's watch and then got beat up for it outside of school, but the guy who beat the kid up got suspended anyway just because people were talking and you could see the bruies and whatnot.

Really? cB isn't blocked at our school. But Xanga, MySpace, Vampirefreaks and sites on Simple Machines are (the 'screw').

ahh my school had banned myspace, xanga, and all those sites and if you do go on it, you will get 6 detentions and they keep on telling us not to put that much personal information online, since anyone can view your page. i mean that's kind of stupid for going on those sites in schools.

If you're going to put something on the internet, chances are people will see it. That's what the internet is for. And there isn't really anything restricting the selected few from seeing those sites, other than blocking. If they don't block, they're dumb and deserve to get in a lot of trouble.

Not that I'm saying that stuff is right. Pretty much..don't put /anything/ on the internet if you don't want some people to see it.

Blogs have nothing to do with a school. It's like a diary..who really cares what's written in a diary? Blogs are just (normally) limited so that it /can/ go on the internet. Schools shouldn't get involved. that's just my opinion.

That's a retarded rule. Why? Parents should be responsible on keeping track of what their kids are having access to online. Like I personally don't want my parents to know, but hey, they aren't complaining or whatnot. So the parents shouldn't complain when it's their fault for not keeping a CLOSE watch over their YOUNG children.
