6-year-old suspended for sexual harassment

Sex-harass suspension of 1st grader stirs debate
Experts say kids his age don’t understand; mother is outraged

A 6-year-old boy is getting a lesson on the meaning of sexual harassment long before he’ll be able to spell it.

The first-grader was suspended for three days for sexual harassment after he put two fingers inside a classmate’s waistband, school officials told his mother, Berthena Dorinvil. The boy told her he only touched the girl’s shirt after the girl touched him.

Experts say only in rare, troubling cases can children that young truly sexually harass one another.

Maybe I'm naive in saying this, but I believe that a three day suspension is way too harsh in this case. In my mind, I don't believe that six-year-olds have it in their conscious thoughts and behaviors to force any type of sexual contact onto another being. I know I didn't. Not for a long time, at that.

What in the world????

My son is six - if he were ever suspended for something like this at his age, I would seriously march my ass up the City Hall steps and do some serious spanking.

a 6 year old got suspended for that?

all he did was stick two fingers in some girl's waisband. it's not like he took her clohtes off or touched her in private areas. he was probably going to give her a wedgie or something _dry.gif

like what other's have said, he probably didn't even know that it was "wrong."

I bet she got nothing against her. All teachers are sexist in first grade against the boys, face it.

As said before, that's absurd and unreasonable.

Reminds me of that one captions in the Caption Hall of Fame.

Something like that.

Still. What the heck.

that's ridiculous. six-year-olds can't even comprehend the meaning of sex or anything like it at their age. and by calling "sticking two fingers into her waistband" sexual harassment? it's not like she protested against it. children at this age don't understand anything remotely sexual, to them, it was probably all just a game.

maybe he was engaging in the other meaning of sexual harassment: i.e. , harrassing someone because of thier sex?

6 year old boys will make fun of girls, and after a certain point it's sexual harassment and illegal.

possibly.

although at that age, one would thing that would be labelled simpyl as bullying, rather than sexual harrasment.

and if so, REALLY misleading article

but the little boy claims that the girl touched him first.

little kids just think that the opposite sex has cooties, they're not aware that it could count as sexual harassment...or even know what that is anyway.

Maybe I should have been suspended for sexual harassment when I was his age. I ran around the playground telling boys I wanted to have sex with them before I even knew what it was.

That requires intent, though. A six-year-old can hardly intend to sexually harass someone; except in very specific circumstances, he doesn't even know what sexual harassment is.

I'm sure the school district got legal opinions from their attorney(s) before giving this punishment. If the girl's parents were really pushy, they could have threatened a bunch of legal action if the district didn't do something. It's my guess the district was backed into the corner or simply set out to make an example of this kid.

It's hard to accurately define the appropriateness of the suspension because the district is bound by confidentiality laws that will restrict disclosure of this situation.

A guy at my school smacked me in the face, intentionally, in high school, and he got 5 days suspension. So he was only two days more severe than in innocently ignorant 6 year old? I mean seirously, the boy probably didnt even mean to. If he stuck two fingers in her cootchie, another story. BUt did he? No. How rediculous. I know people who have done much worse in high school, where they know exactly what they are doing, and have gotten less severe punishement. He didn't even grope her chest. dumb dumb dumb. Just swat his hand and tell him he cant do that. Its not nice. This crap is gonna follow him around for a long time. He won't even know what he did for a nother couple of years. Puh.

blink.gif This reminds me of that family in my friend's neighborhood. The father has been accused of sexual assault 4 times and has been in jail for about 10 years of his life total, one of his two sons is currently in jail for sexual misconduct, the other one is away with his grandfather so he won't have to deal with his father, and the mother ran away a long time ago. I feel sorry for them, but at the same time, I find it really disgusting.

thats messed up...and ppl ARE sexist against boys...

i remember i worked as a YWCA assistant counselour and we worked w/ 2nd graders...all the other assistant counselours were 16 yr old females and they thought this little 2nd grader boy was cute...so they chased him around and gave him wedgies and spanked his ass playfully...

if a 16 yr old guy had done that to a 2nd grader girl....he WOULDVE BEEN FIRED and accussed...but the girls didnt get in trouble for it b/c...we were females...so its ok for us to do that to a little boy..it was kinda..pedophilic tho...for 16yr old girls to have a little crush on a..7 yr old boy..

When I was in 2nd grade, two girls in my class went into the same stall with eachother and showed eachother their privates.
You wanna know their punishment?
The superviser said, "That's bad. Shame on you. Do not do that again"
And, that's it
Shame on the people that suspended the poor guy :\

3 day suspension?? I got a 2 day suspension for BURNING someone with a lighter. I'm not saying this because I'm proud of it; I'm just saying it to prove my point. This is insane, really. I think the debate should be more about the fact that this child is getting a 3 day suspension for something that's barely a level 3 offense and not the fact that he's too young to know about sex.
