I want some new music so this is coming back!
Indie kids unite! happy.gif

So, one of the more mainstream indie bands I'm completely into right now is Sleater-Kinney. I'm sure the rest of you share my love. But yea, I'm reaaaaallllllyyyyy into them. Sure, I have been for a while, but I can't get enough of them. They're always great. Agent Sparks, another one I'm getting into is similar to Sleater-Kinney.

Tilly and the Wall is great, too. I'm really happy to see more chick bands breaking out in the indie music scene. Gives me some inspiration.

The Cardigans have a bit of a retro feel to them. It's refreshing. Another chick, too! cool.gif

The Clientele is really calm and easy. Nice for relaxing. They've been getting a lot of attention lately.

Vitalic is just plain neat. Lots of electric sounds. Pretty obscure, way out from the mainstream music scene. If you've seen Lola Rennt, it's kind of similar to the music in that movie (which is also pretty cool).

I've also been getting into Wolf Parade. A mix between traditional rock sounds and electronic ones. Kind of New Wave-y. Good stuff.

Got any new and upcoming bands/singers that you want to share with the indie population of Createblog, or any to discuss?

If you haven't heard of Kings of Convenience... give them a try. Lovely guitars, harmonies. Their music is very acoustic-feeling. Very natural.

OH, and Belle and Sebastian. They are not at all new, but so very indie-classic. =)

im LOVING hard-fi at the moment... they are massive in the UK (i actually saw them live, well before they were big or i was into them as a support act and they were great) at the moment, and their first album, Stars of CCTV h asbeen on eof the best of 2005 on many critics' lists.

Kings of Convenience are good, but not one of my favorites.

I absolutely love Belle and Sebastian, though.

If you like Belle and Sebastian, you'd probably like Pavement, another love of mine. It's a very "me" band. Hah. laugh.gif

Cardigans! Aiyeee! I love them. I loved them ever since I was five cause they were on the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack. =) (Cruel Intentions too.)

Right now, I'm into We Are Scientists. Everyone seems to be comparing them to Hot Hot Heat and The Killers. XP Maybe because they do sound like them...

Right now I'm into Iron & Wine, which has a very strong folk sound, and Portugal The Man, with music full of mellow beats and a retro feel. (Both courtesy of Pauline.)

I'm really addicted to Metric's Combat Baby though. laugh.gif

Mucho love,

Aly

I'm loving Hard-Fi right now. I really like "Cash Machine"and "Hard to Beat" by them. "Stars of CCTV" was definitely a great album, definitely near the top of the list of "best of..2005"

All in all, I'm not that fond of Wolf Parade, but then again I've really only heard that one song "You are a runner and I am my father's son". They're part of that new (well, not really) canadian wave of bands.
Belle and Sebastian are putting out a new album! I'm so excited. Their first single is out I believe. Its "Funny Little Frog"!

I forgot to add Allison Krause. (Not sure if I spelled the name right). She's more folky than indie, but her voice... gah.... I love her voice. Oh.. and has anyone here heard of Cowboy Junkies? She's another vocalist who just gets under my skin.

Yayyyyyyyyy Sammi! Maybe we can revive the spirit of the fallen underground thread

Despite all the hype, I really cannot stand Sleater-Kinney. Maybe I haven't given them enough of a chance, but I've tried several chance, and it still seems like there's something I'm missing because their music just doesn't do it for me. Also, The Cardigans aren't new or indie, unless I missed something or they're somehow an entirely diferent band than the one I'm thinking of (just looked it up and I'm pretty sure they're not).

(then again, I'm listening to TATU right now, but let's not go there)

Wolf Parade is quite overrated, me thinks. I do enjoy "Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts," and "Disco Sheets" is pretty good, but I don't understand why they';re getting all the indie cred they are. Same for Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. Not bad, but vastly overrated.

Belle and Sebastian's new album is coming out soon. I downloaded half, but redlightglow closed before I got a chance to get the other half, which is unfortunate. I've really been enjoying them lately. Pavement is alright, but not one of my favorites. On that note, I need to listen to more Stephen Malkmus, because "Baby C'mon" has really grown on me.

(oh, ignore the previous TATU comment, my ipod is apparently not up to playing indie music today. I've just heard Garbage and skipped past 3 James Blunt songs (great shuffling job today, too)

But now we're back on track, and I'm lstening to The Rosebuds, who are probably my current favorite. Somehow, "Back to Boston" managed to climb itself up to being the top played song on my ipod, so I think it's safe to say now that it's one of my absolute favorites (which reminds me, James, what did you think of it? you have to send me the rest of the Sparklehorse album, too wink.gif) The Rosebuds have a large amount of wordless vocal moments, which are really catchy. I recommend.

I retract anything I previously said about the Arctic Monkeys. They're irksome, and as James so kindly pointed out, not actually indie (I checked the UK itiunes, and sure enough they were third on the chart...which makes me wonder, why do Americans have such shitty taste?)

I'm From Barcelona ("We're from Barcelona, " "Treehouse") and Love is All ("Make Out Fall Out Make Up") are great. I like The Spinto Band ("Oh Mandy"), Aberdeen City ("God is Going to Get Sick of Me"), and What Made Milwaukee Famous ("Hellodrama") pretty well also. Rogue Wave is a bit like the Shins, not as good but good in their own way which is good. The Boy Least Likely To's "Be Gentle With Me" is great, but I'm not that fond of the rest of their stuff.

The Changes are great. I'm at a loss for a way to describe them, but they're good rock-ier indie stuff

Also, everyone needs to download the "Raised By Wolves" EP by Voxtrot, because they're fantastic, especially "The Start of Something,"

(yeah, I just wrote a ton. And this is after cutting out three paragraphs)

it's better than really repetative lyrics

no, not fond of British Sea Power. I wound up taking them back off my ipod

Yeah, I need to give them another listen, K1m. I liked them pretty well in the 90s, but I'm sure the new stuff is much better

Yen, Death Cab is actually not indie at all anymore. I'm incredibly sick of Bright Eyes, and I think the Arcade Fire is pretty overrated...or at least, I got tired of them too.

I have one of the rosebuds albums, the one with "back to boston" on there.

I wish that song was way longer, it's too short. Yeah, no lyrics there really, but nonetheless amazing. They just had a new album out recently, I haven't checked anything out from there.

Recently, I've been on this Andrew Bird kick.

andrew bird is nice, as is destroyer. british sea power is okay, their live show was a little odd though. i saw matt hopper and the cold war kids last night, and both were pretty good. i am trying to find a ride to go see stars and the elected in san francisco in february, and i think it actually might work out! other bands worth mentioning: on!air!library!, the russian futurists, the boy least likely to, new buffalo, and climber.

That's the one I don't have, besides a couple of tracks. I have the new one and the "Unwind" EP. I do wish "Back to Boston" were longer...

Andrew Bird is okay...I wasn't attracted enough to what I've heard to listen to more of him, really. Do you know when Destroyer's new album is coming out? The two tracks from it are my favorite from them, thus far (particularly since their original version of "Streets of Fire" sucked compared to the New Pornographers' version). I liked the one New Buffalo song I have I ought to listen to more. They remind me of someone...and I still think that The Boy Least Likely To peaked at "Be Gentle With Me." The rest is listenable, but not great.
I've been listeneing to Stars a lot more lately. I really wish we'd gotten those tickets to see them and Death Cab before they sold out hammer.gif.

THE SHINS HAVE A NEW SONGGGGGGGG!!!

Ehh, I didn't really care for the new Shins song. :/

But how can anyone not have mentioned THE LIKE!?!

Give 'em a listen. I didn't have time to check out "What I Say and What I Mean", but I managed to give "June Gloom" a listen.

Panic! at the Disco disappointed me. Most people said that Fall Out Boy fans would enjoy them (I personally like Fall Out Boy), but I didn't really care for them.

And how does seeing an indie band in a teen magazine lower anyone's opinion of them?

I saw them in the magazine before I listened to them. Because the teen magazines pretty consistantly focus on pretty crap music, I didn't expect much from them. Thus, they were better than I expected, but still not my thing.

Panic! At the Disco was better than I expected, actually. I dion't think they're great, but I can't stand Fall OUt Boy or most anyone they're compared to, so that was actually better for me.

Mmm, well, We Are Scientists are delightful nonetheless. And they've been popular amoung the indie crowd since, well, they were still indie.
The Blood Brothers have their moments. They're good, but Only so much at a time.
The Decemberists recently signed to Atlantic(? ...some mainstream label) recently too.

Aww Nicki, I looove Sleater-Kinney. I used to be obsessed with All Hands On The Bad One and The Hot Rock, they also put on a killer show. I don't know how I feel about about their last two releases, One Beat and The Woods. One Beat has some good, catchy songs, but nothing as good as their previous albums. Meh.

The newer Appleseed Cast song "Sunlit Ascending" is amazing! I also just heard Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's new song "Young Shields" and I think it's decent, but it definitely not as happy as his older stuff, and I don't like how much it sounds like Xiu Xiu. I just finished listening to Final Fantasy's "Has a Good Home" and I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it is very interesting nonetheless. Lastly, my first issue of Paste came today and I am sooo excited!

I've only listened to three tracks off the new Appleseed Cast, but I'm really impressed. "Two Conversations" as a whole didn't really hold my attention, so I'm glad this is good. Final Fantasy is best in small porttions, I think. I've heard only about half the album, but I still prefer it shuffled with other songs. "The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead" and "(This is) The Dream of Win and Regine" (wow, doesn't that title sound familiar? rolleyes.gif ) are best. I read the new Paste on Friday afternoon, but decided not to buy it so I'd have things to read at BN for the next two months. I adore that magazine, though. There was an article in the newspaper about it one time, and it turns out it's actually pretty local. The little music store near my school even has displays for it.

I downloaded the new Belle and Sebastian album a few days ago, and am completely enraptured with them now. And, of course, I'm still smitten with Voxtrot, who just put up a new mp3 for download.

I'm not a huge fan of Belle & Sebastian, but I thought their new album was enjoyable. I also got the new Mates of State album "Bring It Back" (which comes out later this year, I think?) and it's really good, but I still like their old stuff better. Peachcake is damn catchy, definitely worth a listen if you like cheesy, dancable stuff.

Really? I "Bring it Back" is my favorite Mates album. It's really the only one that I can listen to the entirety of without driving myself mad. I'm listening to Paper Airplanes right now, and they seem to be pretty good.

^"Our Constant Concern" is my favorite currentally, though I used to like "Team Boo" a lot too and then got annoyed with it really quickly. I've been listening to Sigur Ros a lot more recently, they calm me down when I'm doing homework.

Aw man, I love Mates of State! They're playing in Chicago soon, but of course, like any show that I reaaaaallllyyyy want to go to (like the Ted Leo one coming up), it's 18+. hammer.gif

I'm probably going to see Jenny Lewis and Metric soon, though. _smile.gif

Indie really isn't a genre, it's just a buzz word. _dry.gif

If anything, "Indie" should always just be considered short for Independent Music (Which would exclude some bands discussed here, no?). In which case, I might like alot of "Indie" tunes.

What about "indie" labels?

Augustana?

They're not exactly labeled "Indie", though they could probably be considered it. Even if they're not, it's some darn good music.

I don't really listen to much indie music.

I like Bloc Party, The Myriad, though. And of course the obvious is DCFC. I don't know if you would consider Daphne Loves Derby indie, either.

Actually..now that I'm looking through the thread, I'm not sure that I know what the exact definition of "indie music" is anymore. mellow.gif

Oh well.

Could be largely beccause there really is no exact definition for indie music anymore, if ever. And after reading "Under the Radar" the other day, most supposed "indie" artists don't really know how to define it either. I think The Shins put it best- they want their music to reach people, but they don't want the name to get so big that you have the jock pummelling a kid while wearing a Shins t-shirt. That's sort of what it means to me: music that doesn't reach that mainstream audience. Technically, it involves being on an indie label, so no matter how you look at it, Death Cab is in no way indie anymore. Formerly indie, still great, but not indie now.

That's so elitist and horrible that everyone might as well be that "jock pemmelling a kid." So stupid. pinch.gif

Their music can reach people, but not if those people are any less "indie" than them or their "indie" friends. Awful. This isn't about music, clearly. It's about keeping those margins narrow and those social ladders hard to climb, unless of course you're ready to buy some individuality! I'm so bohemian!

Well, I think of "indie" more of an adjective to describe a genre. For me that connotates that they're not mainstream to a point where everyone knows who they are and that they're most likely on an independent label.

As far as shows go, I am trying to get my mom to take me and a couple of friends to some of the Noisepop shows in San Francisco at the end of March. They have a great line-up this year. If I go, I will either go to the Her Space Holiday (with +/-) show one night and the We Are Scientists (with Foreign Born and The Grates) the next night, or (if my ride can't get weekday time off) I will go to the We Are Scientists show and the Xiu Xiu (with The Velvet Teen and Minipop) the next night. Either way, it will be amazing if I get to go! An Angle is also playing here in the next couple of months, so I will be attending that.

I downloaded Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's "Etiquette" yesterday (it comes out sometime in March, I believe) and it is very different than anything he's ever done before... though I don't know if it's any more approachable. Either way, it's worth a listen if you didn't like his old stuff.

Lastly, if you like Ladytron, I suggest you give Broadcast a listen.

And the Onion is involved? That's just way too cool.
Oh, I believe the #12 Looks Like You is coming here soon, but it's on Demetri Martin day, so screw that. I've heard good things about them, though.

I've heard great things about Wolfmother; anyone have any opinions?
I can't exactly try anything out nowadays cause my speakers have stopped liking me, but that'll be fixed soon...

Ahem, Alternative Tentacles.

That really wasn't what I was getting at. I was thinking of it more along the lines of not reaching the mainstream. The jocks and cheerleaders of the world generally represent the trendy youthIt's not so much a matter of superiority as that it's nice to listen to things that are a little more unique than what the radio feeds you (especially since it rarely plays anyhing that isn't frightfully bad). So really, indie is more a genre than anything else, because the type of music appeals to me more than anything, but it's not like it's some sort of disclusive thing that I do just to fit a certain mold. I mean, not that many people listen to ska, but I can't sya I like a whole lot of it either. Everyone, whether they admit it or not, wants to have some sort of feeling of superiority to the masses in one way or the other, because people can't generally handle sucking at life entirely. In th same way indie music can be condemned as a way to feel better than normal, you also get to feel superior for realizing the pettiness. Whatever. You listen to what you enjoy, you get over the rest of it.

But anyway, the new Destroyer album is really good. I'm liking it a lot better than his older stuff. The new Fiery Furnaces album "Bitter Tea" seems like it'll be pretty decent too, which is new, since I wasn't too fond of "Rehearsing My Choir"

^Yeah! That would be great.

Shiny Toy Guns are good, I liked them a lot last summer. They played a show here (I was in Montana, ughhh) and now all the whole scene here loves them too.

I finally got Chin Up Chin Up's "We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers" and it is wonderful! Broadcast's "Tender Buttons" is decent too, but a little too heavy on electronics for me. I cannot wait for Final Fantasy's new album (in March?). The new stuff on their MySpace is really good. I had to clue he is in The Arcade Fire.

Thought I'd bump this!

Anyways, the concert fell out because of a ton of reasons that unluckily happened to converge at the last moment, but my mom promised me she will take us to the concert of our choice this summer, so I guess it evens out.

Album-wise, I've been listening to:
"He Poos Clouds" by Final Fantasy (just downloaded it; incredible!)
"Tender Buttons" by Broadcast (I fell in love after a couple of listens)
"The Comeback EP" by Stars (took me forever to find this; good stuff, as expected)
"Faking the Books" by Lali Puna (calming!)
"The Garden" by Zero 7 (only listened to it once, but it's great)
"Return to the Sea" by Islands (fun album)

Other bands worth checking out: You Say Party! We Say Die!, Stellastarr*, Cool Hand Luke, On!Air!Library!, The Brunettes, and The Fiery Furnaces (new album). Her Space Holiday also has a new song on his Myspace ("The Telescope), as well as a new side-project, and both are worth a listen.

So "He Poos Clouds" is good? The two tracks I listened to didn't impress me nearly as much as "Has a Good Home." I liked that one, but I got a bit tired of it anyway.

I've read a good deal about the Islands, but don't think I've really given them a chance yet. I haven't listened to Stars' EPs either, though I know where to find them all (so if there's any you're missing, let me know). As far as Zero 7, I listened to that track with Jose Gonzalez a few times, but it was a little anticlimactic for me.

The only one of the bands you've listed I haven't heard is Cool Hand Luke, so I'll have to go look for them. I have to say, though, that "Bitter Tea" is definitely my favorite Fiery Furnaces' album (though EP was alright).

The albums I've downloaded most recently inclue The Essex Green, The Starlight Mints, The Raconteurs, Brendan Benson, Ben Folds' EPs (which I prefer to his LPs), PAS/CAL, Sondre Lerche, The Dandy Warhols, Rainer Maria, Maximo Park, Maritime, the new Snow Patrol and Zutons (because those are indie rolleyes.gif) and the Most Serene Republic. I have a good many other assorted songs as well, because I've had a slight dearth of ways to occupy the second half of my spring break.

The Decemberists
The Unicorns
Keane
Frou Frou
Kaiser Chefs
The Raveonettes
Dressy Bressy
The Bravery - How could I forget them wub.gif Do you guys consider them Indie?

I've been looking for "A Lot of Little Lies for the Sake of One Big Truth" by Stars and I finally found it, only to find the uploader link broken pinch.gif. I was surprised with "Bitter Tea" because I've only listened to "EP" once and I didn't like it much. I listened to some PAS/CAL yesterday, I couldn't decide whether or not I liked them. It took me a little bit to get into The Most Serene Republic, but I love them now. I've been listening to a lot of Imogen Heap also (possibily not indie?) and she's extraordinary, especially in the live videos I've seen.

I found "A Lot of Little Lies for the Sake of One Big Truth" and while I haven't actually downloaded it, it seems be working. I'll PM it to you. I think I can get most, if not all of "He Poos Clouds," too. I just listened to "Arctic Circle" and liked it pretty well. I didn't listen to EP until aftre I listened to "Bitter Tea" and it wasn't nearly as good- I didn't bother to put it on my ipod- but it was still much more tolerable than "Blueberry Boat" or the travesty that is "Reheasing My Choir" (I did try to appreciate it, but I just couldn't stand it). PAS/CAL isn't great, but I like them more with each listen. After hearing "I Found a Reason" in "V for Vendetta," I wound up seeking more Cat Power, and am really enjoying "You Are Free," which I prefer to "The greatest."

Tom Vek's vocals sound a lot like that of a local musician named Jeremy Williams here...it's weird.

God, I came back from vacation hoping to download some more albums and THAT came up. First RLG, then them, then Child Star. But I also found the comments interesting nonetheless.

Tilly and the Wall's new album leaked! Now if only SoulSeek wasn't sucking right now... pinch.gif.

Did you get the Stars album I sent you?

I've grabbed a few of the new Tilly and the Wall tracks, and I think I like it better that Wild Like Children.

The newest enstallment of RLG can be found at http://winterdenim.blogspot.com, by the way.
it's absolutely insane. Glass Danse (I wasn't at the original) -> RedLightGlow -> Glass Danse again -> Warehouse Groove -> winter denim. wacko.gif (Of course, being that winter denim just opened, there's not a whole lot of interest right now, but I assume it'll grow if it actually lasts)
