I seriously need help, and it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED biggrin.gif

French is VERY hard. There are like 200 ways of saying I am going to the theatre (the verb).

I'm having a very hard time doing freshman french. Does anyone have any recommendations on improving. I do practice (not often though), but maybe my method of studying and practicing is wrong, because I can't seem to memorize or get any French in my head :(

I even bought a program to try to help me but its not working.

Ah thanks. I'm in freshman French so I guess that's French I.
In Canada btw.

Isn't this a US-based forum? Do they teach French in the US too?

well for the listening activities esp
my teacher makes us listen to french radio/television
it is actually helpful, you get a feel for the language, it helps you identify words, you get used to the accents and everything. try it out =)
or you could go down to your local library and pic out tapes/cds to listen too

Hey!

I speak french fluently, that's because i live in a french speaking country. And YES it is VERY hard. But if i did it, so can you.

You can take evening courses, watch french chanels (i wonder if there is over where you live), use the internet, pay attention in class...

I'm half french and I live in a city that has 2 official languages, english and french.

If possible [after doing grammar lessons and such] try to get some french channels and also try posting on a french message board. I know someone who's french, she made so many errors and a year later, her english is so improved that she's better than most anglophones.

I think the best way to improve your French is to visit French websites, watch French movies, read French books, talk to some French or even with your friends ... as everybody here said basically. That's what i did to improve my english and I think I'm pretty good now. Anyway if you need some help, I'd be glad to be useful cause I speak french fluently (since I'm French rolleyes.gif)

I thought French was hard. Practice writing a dialouge of two people greeting each other in French. For example.

*TWO PEOPLE MEET EACH OTHER IN LUNCH CAFETERIA"

Boy: Bonjour, Je m'appelle Jean-Claude. Et toi?
translation: hello, my name is Jean-Claude. And you?
Girl: Salut Jean-Claude. Ja m'appelle Stephanie. Comment ca va?
translation: hi Jean-Claude. My name is Stephanie. How are you?

i know it's pretty lame. But its the best way i practiced french

My dad was an ESL (English as second language) teacher, he's retired but offers private courses now. That kind of translation can be good but sometimes, students tend to try to do a word for word translation and they can easily make mistakes that way.

I love English even if it's the stolen language lol.

french is hard. >< and i'm in AP french. no english whatsoever. it's constantly in french.

i learned that if you don't know the basics, you are basically screwed.

i go online for free french courses.

IELanguages - this is a pretty good one. it's really well organized and has a whole range of topics.

Oh so you chose french? BIG MISTAKE. In my opinion anyway, I HATE French. (How ironic that I'm french club prez--ahh I only want that trip to NYC)

Umm, since it's a language...practice, practice, practice with writing and speaking is the best way to go about it.

I don't think it merited its own thread but, um, can anyone help me learn how to pronounce words with the letter 'r'? Any exercises and such? My oral lesson teacher is a terrible teacher, to be honest.

I've heard sound files of the letter itself and tons of vocabulary words but I can never seem to get it right.
