Wouldn't it be cool if CB had a writing competition? Do they already? I don't think I've seen one. Tell me what you think.

I actually really like that idea. I've been wanting them to do one of those for a while now. hmm....I wonder....
I might try to organize it, maybe another mod who comes here in writing would be interested in helping me?

A contest? And who's to say what piece of writing is best? It's all opinion. Nobody has that absolute authority.

How do you even begin to compare different genres of writing? An informative researched essay to a passionate piece of prose from the heart to a beautiful flowing villanelle or sestina? They're not even in the same league.

Let's see you even begin to try.

There already was one that failed.

WOW.

I was suggesting something simple maybe. Poetry of a certain genre, or such. The judges could be mods and users who frequent the writing forum.

i love your enthusiasm, really.
For starters, the contest will be on one genre. For example: let's say the contest goes on for 3 weeks. The topic will be on "your definition of beauty" in a sestina style. The 2nd contest might be the word "Frown" in a couplet style. The 3rd contest might be an informative essay on whatever topic you might like, the 4th might be on the word "Disdain" in a creative writing, any style...each time will be different.
With a contest like this i wouldn't just throw it out into the open. You can say the same thing with a dancer, how can you judge who's the best dancer?...it matters if it's in ballet, lyrical, hip-hop, jazz, modern..ect...and how they perform. How creative they are. The writing contest would flow along the same lines. It will be judged on creativty, technique, being unique... And yes it's all opinion, everyone has their own different opinion whenever there is a competition. Whether it be in digital art, photography, singing, modeling...anything. That's what makes it so great. Everyone will vote on the piece that touches them the most.

Perfect! If you haven't found anybody or if you need anyone (and since it was my idea) I'd like to help out in anyway possible. I think it deserves (another?) chance. There are a lot of good writers at cB.

You could split the contest up into different categories/genres, and just compare like to like.

Although you do raise a number of issues, namely, who would be the judges of such a contest? Clearly it would have to be people not entering the contest, but would that leave a fair number of appropriate people?

Yes, different genres but one genre at a time. Otherwise it would be a complete overload. I think there are plenty intelectuals in the forums to find a few writing judges.

Yeah, Katie and I are talking about prizes at the moment.
For now, since the idea is just in baby-stage I think we should advertise (with links in sigs and such) nothing big, but something to get others interested.

well who would judge this? it could be more open.... like have a little vote. with hold the names of the writers, but post the pieces, and people would vote on which piece better fits the definition.. i might be a little late in posting this...

i don't know how it would work. you'd need someone to gather the accumulated pieces and post them.. along with a poll reading the piece titles..

and then there would be the issue of people not voting at all. gotta give the cb community a motivation to do it...

Poetry isn't the only form of writing. If there is such a contest, I'd hope there'd be more to it than merely poetry.

Guys, i've written out the outline for it already. I've already ran it past Linda Belle, i'm just tweaking it and doing minor stuff, and then we'll get this thing started. It should be up by this weekend!
Just a sneak peek:
actually there will be 2 contests. a main contest and a mini-contest.
Yes, all of createblog will vote. The voting will be similar to how the caption contest does voting.
The first contests will be very simple. Just to get things started :)

^ Why wouldn't writers beable to write on their own peice? Just as long as everyone gets one vote? I think that's fair, if I were running for president I'd be allowed to vote for me.
