QUOTE ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- Scientists have made from scratch the Spanish flu virus that killed as many as 50 million people in 1918, the first time an infectious agent behind a historic pandemic has ever been reconstructed. now why would they do this. ![]() |

presumably, they intend to study it, and the way in which it my mutate, probabl yin regards to a possible future bird flu pandemic

Yes, if one reads the article, one can see why they would reconstruct such a beast: because the way it mutates and spreads is similar to other viruses, and can be used to combat other similar viruses. It is for this reason that the remaining stockpiles of polio and other eradicated viruses are not destroyed.

people these days are so smart. i tried to think about how to make a virus and came to the conclusion that it would be super difficult. i dont even know how anyone could possibly think up how to do it.
it blows my mind. |

^^ yea...I think it would be pretty hard. Actually, to tell the truth I've never been intrested in biology or genetics, but I guess it's a smart idea, because then they could study it and create vaccinations, etc. The only downside is that it could 'escape' or get into the wrong hands. Then we'd be screwed.

The bird flu and the 1918 flu had some similarities, but not all. If they have discovered the cure to the pandemic disease, then why not try it for this way? Gahh...I hope they find something soon, I heard that this one's deadly. >_>

my human geography teacher (she's also a Gov AP, and many other AP teacher) was talking about this today.. it was in a national geography mag for the past month i think if u get it..
they were talking that a ppl are talking about making a cure since there are people already dying from it... alot of talk of that it could take like 6 months so that everybody has it.. they said 1/3 ppl could die from it and this and that.. i aint pay much attention.. they said the breakout could come up here in 1 year and it takes 1 yr to make a cure for it... hmm these viruses usually come from birds... they usually spread to dogs and other animals and then human.. usually cuz we eat cows and stuff.. they said this flu is gonna be way harder than the last one.. |

What's so special about the 1918 virus? I dont get it. Somehow, i think they are doing for their research. How do they reconstruct the virus?

hmm, I'm not sure but I THINK it would help if you read the replies! QUOTE(Spiritual Winged Aura @ Oct 7 2005, 9:44 PM) beside the fact that it killed 50 million people, ohhhh...it wasn't THAT special ![]() They take out the plasmids from a 1918 victim, and you insert them into kidney cells. |

QUOTE(racoons > you @ Oct 8 2005, 3:57 AM) presumably, they intend to study it, and the way in which it my mutate, probabl yin regards to a possible future bird flu pandemic exactly. many researchers believe that the bird flu here in SE Asia is linked to the spanish flu which infected about half the population in the world in 1918. |

They better keep it under safe observation. But then again.. it might help with some of the world's overpopulation.
Whatever they actually do intend to do with it though, they can have fun messing around with it. If they want to use it for new research, fine with me. As long as it isn't for some hidden conspiracy or something. |

Read the previous posts you dip. haha. wow. o yea. about the topic. not that im thrilled that they reconstructed it, but it has the potential benefit of saving millions of lives. i think ill be able to deal with it. |

At the end, they'll be like .. 2,384 people left on Earth w/out being affected .. UNLESS it's controllable. ![]() |

QUOTE(SillyCourtney @ Oct 9 2005, 7:17 PM) Yea, I know. But, still, it doesn't mean it can't become one. They're using it now for a good purpose, but in the future things could turn out quite differently. All it takes is one sicko. Well, if that happens, just cover all your windows and doors in plastic sheeting and duct tape, and you won't be affected by biological weapons. |

I don't think there is any need for this yet.
But it's very interesting what they could do with it. |
