I've never read the whole book, but I read a couple pages out of it once. It was a bit slow, but I liked it..I've heard it's a good book.

I think my English teacher told my class about this one. She said it's supposed to be really good.

f**king awesome book!

I read it in 8th grade. I got extra credit for it too, since I'd already read Animal Farm which we read in class cool.gif

I loved it, and thought it was a pretty quick and easy read (and this was 3 years ago). How did you get lost?

1984 is one of the best books I ever read.

If you want to humor yourself by buying into the Big Brother conspiracy; notice the cameras on the highways and in populated squares and courtyards of big cities. Notice the pro-Bush ads and his oh-so-convenient photo ops in "unfortunate" locations. Notice how America is being fed a distorted image of the middle east. And finally, notice how the majority of the country is eating it all up. Ignorance is strength.

I wrote a paper once on how Roman art and architecture was designed around the themes presented in 1984 for an art history class. It was probably my finest work ever.

1984 is one of my favorite books. I read it in seventh grade for a book report, and I've read it several times since then. There are really a lot of themes, from constant surveillance to government oppression to libertarianism, that can be found in the world of today. It's one of the few things I have read as part of school projects that still has some relevance today. As a former political science student, I've spent a lot of time drawing parallels between real-world politics and those presented in 1984.

The concept of a never-ending war, as presented in 1984, also has some bearing on world events of today (such as the "war on terror") which makes it easy to draw parallels between fact and fiction.

Overall it's a decent read; heavy if you really get into trying to understand the concepts presented in the book, but in the end, it's probably worth it, because much of the book is relevant today.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can hate that book. It's on of my favorites; I should really reread it as soon as I find the time...which could easily not be until Christmas break.

Michael, your paper sounds really interesting

Oh, it was. If the paper sounds interesting, you should have seen the talk I gave on it. I got that picture of Bush on the aircraft carrier after the "end of hostilities in Iraq" and compared it to Roman political propaganda as seen in statues, which also tied in surveillance and 1984. I think that I'll never top that presentation; probably should just drop out of school so I end on a high note.

1984 is a really good book... don't worry, the beginning of the book is boring... but it will pick up eventually. And you'll be left turning pages like crazy.

ART 221: Visual Cultures of the Mediterranean. It covered art and architecture from ancient Rome, early Islamic periods, and medieval Christian influences.

It's a very controversial book about communism and all kinds of stuff like that, but it's a spectacular read. An Orwell classic, the first page might seem a little iffy to you, but you can't judge a whole book by the first page, give it a go!

Whoa. Talk about ironic.

My dad was telling me about this book yesterday...

I have yet to read it due to the communist teachers and the buttload of homework they're giving me, and how tiring it is.

But i'm totally going to read this...

Big Brother is here...

Sure, if I can find the file (should be pretty easier). To where should I email it?

I've heard nothing but thumbs up reviews on this book. I haven't had the pleasure of reading it just yet. I'll get to it eventually.

Yeah.... I read 1984 last year for fun. The book was so battered it was falling off on me! I had to use a paperclip to hold pages together.

I definitely thought 1984 was better than Animal Farm. But maybe that's because I read 1984 more recently, and I went and saw the play. I found that it represented communist China (back in the day) in many ways, and I think Orwell was farsighted for his time; he basically predicted the future (though it was exagerrated).

I thought this was a fairly good book. I don't really enjoy Orwell's style or anything, though. The story was good ^_^ I like sex scenes in school books. <3!

great book. i chose it for a research paper last year and it really parallels with stalinism.. it's pretty crazy. i love how the people that torture are part of the ministry of love. kinda ironic.
