I have uniforms at my school. I love them, it's just like wearing pyjamas to school, they are so comfortable! And it's not like we never get to wear real clothes, we have jean days every once in awhile.

Plusses of uniforms
1) You wake up in the morning, and you can get ready 10x faster because you don't have to hunt down clothes to wear.
2) They are REALLLY comfortable.
3) They aren't that bad, there's a lot of choice we have: Long sleeve and short sleeve men and womens fitted blouses all in white, Long sleeve and short sleeve golf shirts in either green or white, either navy blue or beige dress pants or casual pants (they look like dickies), for the girls a kilt that is plaid, for the guys we have shorts, most guy just cut off their pants because the shorts are kind of old-mannish, and we have either navy or green sweaters...but they are REALLLY ugly, no one wears those _dry.gif
4) You can wear the same pants all week and no one will know shifty.gif
5) They don't take away your individuality, remember, there is still hair, makeup, jewellery, tattooes, peircings etc.... trust me if you want to be punk, we will be able to tell you are indeed punk
6) For all you evil bullies out there, they don't prevent you from bitching to the fat kids about how ugly their clothing is, because sure enough you just find something else to bitch about
7) Your clothes don't get ruined from daily wear happy.gif

Minuses
1) I can't think of any...

QUOTE(uninspiredfae @ Aug 15 2005, 6:54 PM)
Aye, they get paid by parents to teach students, not to serve them. There is a difference. Home-schooled kids are not being served by Moms and Dads, they're being taught.

Students are a part of society in which schools serve. Unfortunately, they're not coughing out money to pay the service rendered, thus have no real say in policies.

students have a lot more power than you think.
if all the students walk out of a school, are teachers going to have jobs?

QUOTE
Uniforms are a step in the direction of removal of individuality IF IT'S MEANT TO BE USED that way. However, it's used towards the direction of:
"decreasing violence and theft -- even life-threatening situations -- among students over designer clothing or expensive sneakers;
helping prevent gang members from wearing gang colors and insignia at school;
instilling students with discipline;
helping parents and students resist peer pressure;
helping students concentrate on their school work; and
helping school officials recognize intruders who come to the school" (source).

all uniforms are meant that way. because individuals are the ones that start fights, start gangs, wear things other kids aren't wearing.

uniforms instill not discipline, but the ability to follow.

QUOTE
If a uniformed child comes home yelling "Mommy, the school is stripping away my individuality! I have no creatvitiy, no thought of self-expression because of these darn uniforms. I'm a clone of Cindy and she stinks!" and such a claim is true, then I have nothing further to say. The point is, such a statement has no truth (except for Cindy being stinky, that I don't know).
*

the school isn't stripping away her individuality, no doubt. the school is leaning towards that direction. there is nothing wrong with uniforms- it's what they open the door to, that's why uniforms are bad.

if, for instance, all public schools are required to have uniforms, well then we'll be raising a generation of mindless followers and brainless order-obeyers. that is a slight exaggeration, but that's what uniforms do.

Don't be silly, of course they will! In a civilized society, teachers will have jobs (so long as economic situations allow).

... so when schools enforce uniforms, it's actually a conspiracy to brainwash students into following school rules. *Gasp*... actually, that doesn't sound so bad.

Uniforms do too instill discipline AND the ability to follow when they're used that way. Uniforms also promote team work. They do not have one purpose but many, so you can't go around saying they don't instill this this and that, because they can.

QUOTE

Opening the door to what? Being brain dead? I don't think so. If they're opening the door to stripping individualities, then why do I still have mine? Why do my cousins and so many others still have theirs?

You're only making a guess with no real stats or facts to back this up. That could happen, and it also could not. I haven't seen uniformed kids being brainless order-obeyers and there many, many students who wear uniforms.

Actually, I am FOR the uniforms. Not only does it look neat and orderly, it represents the school as a whole when others judge.

huh i had uniforms in elementary school and i donated those clothes the day i graduated. sure, it suppresses our expressiveness but in high school and middle school, there are just too many ppl who get teased bcuz they wear the "wrong stuff". uniforms r good if THEY LOOK GOOD and it makes it so that no one is an outcast. at least not in fashion.

Uniforms don't prevent anything... Hmmm... that's interesting. How about preventing you from making fun my clothes because you're wearing the same thing?

how about preventing you from having to make a choice about what to wear?

a lot of people can't make choices easily, but life is about choices. I don't wear the same thing every day, but i can make a choice about what to wear in 15 seconds. uniforms do make it easier for kids, but it will make it harder for them as adults.

if students never learn what's appropriate for school (and thus work), because they always have uniforms, what happens when they're the CEO of a company? or someone trying to be the CEO? if you wear slutty clothes to a meeting, it's not good. wearing the same thing everyday isn't too good either. so, uniforms do some good, but they prevent schools from teaching children social lessons, like how to dress appropriately.

a uniform is only good because that way you wouldnt really have to think of what to wear before you go to school and stuff, and also you wont be judged by what you wear within the school. so i guess its a good thing. and it would be a benefit to the schools 'image' since you would not see any ppl wearing 'slutty' or clothing that will distract others learning.

well i've had to wear uniforms before (for like 10 years!) and after i switched schools it was free-dress everyday. i cannot tell you how i envy those who can pick out an outfit in less than a minute. maybe it's just me but this free dress thing puts quite some pressure on me and is a little overwhelming. :p i've never wanted to dress in uniforms more than now, hehe. it was more fun back then when all i had to think about was what to accessorize with! biggrin.gif

Uh no, you still have a choice to wear out of school. In fact, school isn't the place where you have to worry about what you wear, school should be a place to worry about getting an education. Life is about choices, some more important than the others. Obviously, getting an education is more important that needing to worry what you're wearing because Susie will be wearing the same thing.

And if you're saying that kids don't know what's appropriate to wear because they wear uniforms, then I guess private school kids who do wear uniforms dress horribly outside of school? Uh, again NO. Unless you have some stats/facts to back this up, Mr. Acid, that argument is dead. tongue.gif

Actually, I think it's just the opposite--uniforms can teach kids what is appropriate to wear in a formal or semi-formal setting (such as an office) because the uniforms themselves demonstrate what is expected of children (and thus adults) to wear.

This could just be at my school, but uniforms don't prevent bullying, teenage depression, cliques, they prevent nothing at my school, they just put clothes on us that's all, it may be different at other schools though. And I am not a bully if that's what you're getting at, I'm just saying that at my own school the uniforms don't change or prevent anything....understand?? And we do have jean days every once in awhile (at least once a month, sometimes every friday) so you aren;t even being prevented from wearing your own clothes...trust me peole know who you are.
