Why get offended at all? That's letting racist people win. Ignore it and they'll get tired and eventually society's racism will die out more and more (but never completely).

i don't care about the confederate flag. anyone who gets so worked up over it needs to just calm the hell down, there's way better stuff to to get worked up over. I

the U.S. flag was around what, like 50+ years before the confederate flag even came into the picture? we could call the U.S. flag racist too, since it flew while racism and slavery were allowed. obviously we could call a lot of flags racist if we really felt like it.

that would be ridiculous though. just like this is.

seeing as they represent the confedracy, the natural thing to say would be yes
however, the flag itself isnt racist. just what it means
lol, i dont think that made sense, but whatever

I agree with you. Each flag has its own dark history but that doesn't mean it represents such history completely and totally.

I really think it's just tacky at this point. At the beach this summer, I saw a girl in a confederate flag bikini; I was not impressed. It seems to not be so much as symbol of racism as it is of being a hick and having absolutely no taste. Redneck and proud, wooo for a shitty heritage!

However, last year I went to a football game with the band at a school that was in what I'd consider to be fairly far out into the country. There, people were waving and running around with their confederate flags, and I have to say, it was pretty intimidating. My band-- my high school in general-- was pretty diverse, and while I wouldn't say anyone was exactly scared or even offended necessarily, it did make us all sufficiently uncomfortable. It perpetuated the stereotype of the county the school was in, which is that they're all really racist there, and actually make it a point to keep out anyone who isn't white. I think the south part if improving a little, but that night really just proved that the north isn't. For god's sake, they only had one Jewish kid in their entire band, and they only even figured that out because we were telling them that we were missing about 20 people because it was some holiday or other. Sure, they were all friendly enough to me, but I'm not sure everyone could say the same, and despite the fact that they were nice, the flag displays overshadow that completely.

While in itself the confederate flag should not symbolize racism (and I fully agree with the post above this), it still does possess the connotations of racist overtones.

Jesus, I just noticed how many things I typed incorrectly. I really need to stop posting outside with my laptop balanced on my knees so that I can barely see the screen.

Yes, I can see how your band would be uncomfortable.

And a Confederate flag bikini? Haha, I would have died laughing.

I believe it's not intended to be, but people take it offensively because of its negative connotation.

I don't think it is and I'm black.

People should be able to represent whatever they believe in any way necessary.

When I read about the lady in the confederate bikini, I pictured an overweight, scraggly haired, tooth missing, middle aged lady. LOL. My bad.

I don't think the flag it's self is racist, but most people who have them hanging up in their home or on their vehicals usually are. I have people in my family who have the flag hanging up. My brother had one in his bedroom and stickers of it on his truck. Stereotypically, it's a "redneck" thing.

Now If there was someone driving a vehical with nazi flags on it and they had their head shaved... that'd probably be a racist.
