QUOTE(sadolakced acid @ Jan 22 2005, 8:40 PM) why is there need now? history months will only encourage the idea that race determins something. benifits to one race will encourage the idea that that race is inferior and thus needs help. i abso-f*cking-lutely agree with you, man. at my school, there are more asians and blacks than there are white kids. i hate february ![]() |

ok, this might be a little off-topic, but whatever:
you know how some black kids will come up to a white kid and accuse the white kid's ancestors of enslaving their [the black kid's] ancestors? well honey, my ancestors were in ireland eating potatoes and being taken over by the british. just like a ton of other white kids..except their ancestors were in other parts of europe yeah....kind of a rant, but whatever my main point is is that people need to stop thinking they're so superior because of their race because YOU'RE NOT, and people need to stop blaming the wrong person for their problems. besides, well all know slavery was a bad thing, and i feel bad for all the slaves, but that was a long time ago, and we just need to drop the whole d*mn subject. i'm not saying we should totally forget about it; we shouldnt, but people need to stop bringing sh*t up and GET OVER IT. do NOT call me a racist b*tch because i'm not. if you have a problem with my opinions, get over it or email me about it. |

QUOTE(mzkandi @ Feb 5 2005, 12:26 PM) LOL...White history month...are you kidding me....let me take a moment to collect myself..Yes lets us take a month to talk about the history of white man's struggles...psshhh...Black history is well deserved seeing all the struggles we( yes we cuz i am BLACK) have gone through but that shouldnt suggest i dont think other minorites dont deserve recongition becuz they do...... QUOTE believe me i read the entire thing!!!! I not here to argue becuz at the end of the day a person is gonna believe what they wanna believe How are you reading the entire thing when you basically repeated the points that were argued again and again? The points you've made include all that we've been discussing throughout the seven pages of this topic; they've already been said and debated. |

I told myself I wasn't going to reply to this topic again but oh well.
QUOTE(xeviloompaloompa @ Feb 5 2005, 2:21 PM) you know how some black kids will come up to a white kid and accuse the white kid's ancestors of enslaving their [the black kid's] ancestors? well honey, my ancestors were in ireland eating potatoes and being taken over by the british. There's a collective Black consciousness that does make us think that all white people have committed an injustice against them, discounting the fact that most whites come from immigrants after the abolition of slavery. I'll acknowledge this because at times I'm overly sensitive, even among my white friends. But it is not our fault that we believe this. Let's use me as an example. My mother went to an "integrated school" where she was only one of five Black children. Her teacher told her, and the other Black students, that she would never amount to anything, that she was inferior. She barely passed the Black children, while she allowed the whites to excel. My grandmother probably went through the same things. And my great-grandmother was probably a slave. My grandmother was born in 1918, and 50-odd years earlier, slavery was being abolished. So why have I told you this? My parents, their parents, and their parents have harbored grudges for a long time. Does that instantly go away, just because society has decided to somewhat change? No. Does it get passed on? Of course. Why do you think the Hatfields and the McCoys were rivaled for such a long time? And to reply to previous posts, Kryo, I'll give you that point, no, the events taking place in pre 16th-17th century Africa probably would have not had an effect on worldwide affairs. And Fae, I don't know much about the Vietnam War either, even though it is well documented, but we're not taught about it in high school. It was an embarrassment to the United States and post-Reconstruction American history is focused on the United States successes. |

My grandmother probably went through the same things. And my great-grandmother was probably a slave. My grandmother was born in 1918, and 50-odd years earlier, slavery was being abolished. I understand that it is not your fault that you see things the way you do, but though it is NOT your fault, it still is NOT right to generalize all whites. QUOTE So why have I told you this? My parents, their parents, and their parents have harbored grudges for a long time. Does that instantly go away, just because society has decided to somewhat change? No. Change, for the better or worst, begins at home and, perhaps, within ourselves first. I say that society has changed DRAMATICALLY since then. Instead of beings slaves, MANY Blacks are successful and even have the chance to be richer than the White man. That's huge compared to slavery. QUOTE Does it get passed on? Of course. Why do you think the Hatfields and the McCoys were rivaled for such a long time? Does that make them right for hating each other over the rights to pigs and then bringing such a trivial matter to a full blown bloody feud? This brings back the senerio I provided earlier about my grandfather killing your grandfather. It doesn't make sense for you to be mad at me just because I was born into my family. Or at least, the situation doesn't make sense to me. QUOTE And Fae, I don't know much about the Vietnam War either, even though it is well documented, but we're not taught about it in high school. It was an embarrassment to the United States and post-Reconstruction American history is focused on the United States successes. When I was in high school, the topic lasted a week and I had to turn in short paper. Though I thought it was NOT well taught, the gist of the matter is there. American History classes seem to be focused on the US's successes because there were more successes than failures. Aside from the Vietnam War, not too many people know the name of the person who assassinated JFK, likewise for the name of the second President of the US, and the Presidents who were in office during WWI and WWII. People are clueless in general. It would not be fair to say that people don't know about histories of other countries when they don't even know the history of their own country. |

QUOTE Does that instantly go away, just because society has decided to somewhat change? No. i dont hink that a gradual fadingof resentment over three generations could be considered exactly 'instant' but whatever to reverse the situation, would you consider it 'fair' or normal, for a person whose ancestors looked down on blacks or were in the KKK or whatever to have inherited their predjudices, because, after all, it cant just dissapear, can it? just accepting whtas spoon fe to u by parents and grandparents isnt acceptable grounds for forming opinions. its just laziness and ignorance. |

No one in this thread has said anything to demean all the things the great leaders of the civil rights movement has done for the country. No one is saying anything close to being disrepectful of MLK or Rosa Parks... etc, we are saying if you want equality, then make things equal for EVERYONE. |

QUOTE(xeviloompaloompa @ Feb 7 2005, 8:51 PM) Here's a better wording for general understanding ![]() "Let someone dare to bar from the debate a Black candidate with the polled support of more than half the Black Democratic public". And how many Blacks do you see in Congress? How can anyone expect Americans to elect a Black President when we can hardly keep a Black Senator in office? Same with ANY other minority. Oh yea, I'm quite aware that Jesse Jackson ran for the Democratic Party nomination but didn't make it the both times that he tried, and that Colin Powell was expected to bea candidate in 1996 (but he chose not to run). There are more current ones but their names are lost to me at the moment. The point is, I know there have been minorities running for President and there are a few who are expecting to run in the future. But the point is NOT that minorities are not in office due to racism, I believe, it has MORE TO DO with the question of whether or not America is READY to have a minority President. (I don't know the answer because I have no preference at the moment) |

QUOTE(MarchHare2UrAlice @ Feb 7 2005, 1:03 PM) just accepting whtas spoon fe to u by parents and grandparents isnt acceptable grounds for forming opinions. its just laziness and ignorance. I don't think that's a very fair assumption. It's not like I haven't challenged their beliefs. I'm a hell of a lot more liberal than they are. But it's a combination of both collective consciousness and inexposure. I grew up in a predominately Black community, went to majority Black schools. (Heh, as a matter of fact, I grew up in PG County, where xeviloompaloompa is from.) Forgive me for being "lazy" and "ignorant" but it's hard to shake long held opinions, and yes, prejudices, when you're not exposed to diversity. |
