this has just been gnawing on my mind for a couple days.

a few days ago, i passed by a couple of people talking about how much they LOVED green day... however, when i asked if they knew about green day before their American Idiot song, they all said no. Most didnt even know that they had been around for many years before...

so, as a question to all Green Day fans, especially those who LOVE green day, how many of u knew/cared for the band 5 years ago? how many actually listened to dookie?

not meant as an insult to anyone

Yeh. I know.. it pisses me off.
I liked them a long time before I even knew of American Idiot the CD.
In fact, my favorite song of theirs is an old one.. "Longview"
I love their old stuff, and I truly am a fan.

Yeah, everyone's OBSESSED with Green Day just because of American Idiot. Ever since it hit MTV... (not that I don't like MTV)

I have 3 of their Cd's.. Dookie, American Idiot, and Insomnia. Soo yeah, I've known about them for a while.

I actually think the old Green Day is somewhat better than the new American Idiot kind.. but hey, isn't that most of artists dreams? To be famous and well-known?

I love green day and have been a fan for several years (not sure about the exact number) but my frist Green Day CD was Warning... I've listened to Dookie. I own it actually. I have Dookie, Nimrod, International Super Hits, Insomniac, Warning and American Idiot. I think I'm only missing one of their CDs... My favorite songs are Basket Case and Minority.

I don't understand why people have to prove that they're 'loyal fans' just cause they've been listening to to them for years, bashing on new fans. I understand if it's a group of stupid little girls that cant distinguish oen band member from another running around with notebooks scribbled with 'I LOVE BILLY JOE FROM GREENDAY', meanwhile they're spelling billie joe and green day wrong. That pisses me off as well. But honestly, what's so bad about someone who heard a single on the radio, liked it, bought it and love it? Isn't that what a musicians job is in the first place? Trying to write songs that people can enjoy and get into? It's hypocritical because I doubt all of you guys starting listening to them when they FIRST got together during the mid eighties. Everyone is the noobie at one point or another, and if new people are getting into Green Day now, or any other band for that matter, I say good for them.

I hope I'm noo coming off as mean or anything... Maybe I'm just bitter, but I was talking to my friend the other day and she was pissed off because this girl just started listening to her favorite band, and it bothered her that someone else knew about them. Wtf is up with that? This thread always comes up in a forum, no matter what kind of music you listen to, and it never ceases to amaze me about how possesive some people are towards something that isn't even theirs. There's nothing loyal about that.

Wow... long ass post... O_O.

Wow... long ass post... O_O.

Yeah, but those are the people that make them popular. The trend whores that follow everything because it's on MTV or it's on the radio. They don't truly appreciate the music - they do it because everyone else is. They're fed what the media provides them. To not even know that it's Green Day and Billie Joe makes me mad. It makes the true fans mad. That's why.

oh who the crap cares.
so you listened to them first. whoopie.
you know that you knew first, so let them be.

just cause someone starts listening to a band when their new cd comes out doesn't mean they don't really like the band.

I know that Green Day's been around for awhile, I listen to their songs before "American Idiot" ...
But what's wrong with the fact that there are some people that do like Green Day becuz of their song "American Idiot" ? It doesn't always mean becuz of the media just becuz the song actually makes a connection to them so they like it. Meh, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I know exactly what you mean. A lot of people are so crazy about them now just because 'American Idiot'. People are like, "Omg I <3 Green Day!!" and I'm talkin about those 12 years olds hammer.gif I mean, that's cool if you're a fan but don't claim that you are a die hard fan. I have been listening to em since....let's see, when "Hitchin a ride" came out which is on Nimrod & came out in..1997. So that's 8 years. I was hooked when I saw that video. Anyways, yeah. Those people annoy the pootie outta me.

Well does it really matter? .... mellow.gif

Well I kinda felt the same when people started to like Shinhwa when they just started to like them a month and they said they were their biggest idol.

I heard that in the past albums of Green Day, their albums wasn't that really good? Like they were bit too harsh? But my sister still loves them because of their new album and Billy Joe Armstrong sings very good and he's very nice????

I guess some people say I love Green day when they don't really mean it cause they just want some attention from the Green day fans? I don't know, but that's just my opinion mellow.gif

Wow! My first post. tongue.gif
Sadly I grew up listening to pop, being a part of the overprotective family that I am. Green Day was honestly my first favorite rock band. 7 years ago or so I liked a bunch of their songs that I didn't even know were theirs "Time of Your Life", "Basket Case", "Minority"... etc. Then when I bought their cds for the first time a little over 4 years ago, I was like, "OOOOH that's who sings that song!! This band is awesome". cool.gif My first cd of theirs was Nimrod and now I own all except for Warning, which I shall get soon. Heh heh. Yeah I hafta admit, it was kinda annoying how they just all shot up in popularity from American Idiot. Sure, some of the concepts are really easy to understand and relate to... but still, you can't become a hardcore fan in 3 months. pinch.gif
