Santa Claus, should we tell them the truth or not?

Most people obviously know that Santa Claus doesn't exist, but most parents lie to young children every year that Santa Claus exists and stuff like that, and on Christmas day, the gifts "are mysteriously under the Christmas tree" and the parents say Santa Claus gave it to them (when the parents really know he didn't).

Should parents keep lying to them or not?

yes, i mean it keeps the kids happy. i dont htink i would want that big of a disappointment when i find out the truth (if i was their age)
anyways, they'll grow out of it and they will develop common sense as well

I'd lie, too.
It's just a nice little tradition.
Why spoil it when they're young?
You can tell them when they get a bit older and already have figured out most of it on their own.. but not when they're young.
That just ruins the fun for the little kids.

the parents shouldn't lie about santa claus, i never believed in santa claus because my parents never really acted out that tradition or whatever, sure the kids will be happy then but what about when you have to break it to them? you'll lose their trust and they'll throw temper tantrums

what kind of message is being sent? parents tell their kids not to lie, yet the parents can lie?

Its not like they are telling a huge lie. It makes the kids happy. WHO CARES. Its the parents choice if they want to tell their kids about Santa Claus or not.

They'll most likely figure it out on their own, so I doubt they'd throw a temper tantrum over it. Somehow they'll figure it out.

It's not like the parents are "lying."
Yes, it IS a lie.. but it's similar to those so-called white lies.
I like to look at it as a tradition. A secret.

^ EXACTLY.
It's not going to ruin the kids if they find out the truth, for Pete's sake.

Santa claus is a happy tradition of christmas. for most people the meaning of christmas changes as they grow up.

Well I tell my daughter about Santa Claus.. she's still a little too young to fully grasp the whole Santa thing. But she loves him now and I will keep on telling her about Santa Claus and that whole bit about him coming with gifts. It's part of the spirit of Christmas. It's not a bad lie, it makes the kids wonder and imagine.

Of course they should keep lying. It would make the kid have more imagination, and soon they will grow out of it, but for the mean time, they should believe in it, that is what kids do. Believe in the most nonsense things.

yes, because it's a tradition throughout America. If you were a little kid and you already knew that your parents were the ones that hid ur presents underneath the tree while you were sleeping, wouldn`t u be disappointed? Don`t try to be politically correct...let kids be kids..

I think we should not tell kids. It's been a tradition for awhile, and it gives the kids something to look forward too. I just love when somebody mentions Santa Claus to a little kid & their faces just light up and they smile. It makes the kids happy.

Besides, they'll probably figure it out on their own. We'll let that moment come later.

i'm glad someone brought this up.

The closest thing to Santa Claus and his elf workshop would be a man in a red suit laughing while small children are working at a sweatshop for three cents an hour.

i don't believe lying to kids is a good thing.

i think kid's would rather know the truth than be lied to and given a reward for believing the lie.

Ehh.. if you are going to tell your kids, do so. If not, don't.

Why tell your kids? It loses the whole point in lying to them in the first place.

I never believed in Santa and I always got jealous at the little kids prancing around saying santa is coming. I would get to the point that i would almost tell them Santa isn't real. It sucked. I think parents should do what they feel is best for the child. It's really not that bad if they lie to you in order for you to have a happy childhood. I mean their INTENTIONS were good. tongue.gif

i think it's just a cute little tradition. most kids gradually figure it out on their own anyway, and it's not like it's an incredibly huge, life-shaking, shocking disappointment. and personally, i'm glad that my parents had me believe in santa claus, it was fun part of childhood setting up noisemaking traps for santa in front of the fireplace. :]
