Somewhere legitimate
I've been warned about a few scamming sites.

I've been googling but there's no way
I will be able to tell unless I ask people
who have had experience with hosters

so, please post away
I need all the help I can get

=)

other details:
I need to make it a .com or .net
and it needs to be affordable to a struggling college student

all of those websites offer limited variety

=(

I need somewhere where I am in total control of everything my website has
and free web hosters usually are not the place to start with that

Thank you for trying to help though...
I clicked all of the links the topic listed
no help =(

I use A Small Orange. They have plans for as low as $25/year ($2.08/month).

I read through
and they tell you that they design it for you

But I will be designing it.

I think you may be confused with their web design services and their hosting services.

Would you mind telling me if they allow you to edit it yourself?

as in put your own coding in...flash, CSS, HTML.. etc.
and have full access to editing every part of your website?

I'd love to hear back from you

You can do whatever you want with your own site. They just provide hosting for you.

I'm just having issues with it
because it says no refunds and
the fact they have so little
info about things like subdomains
and etc.

Not sure where you see that. From the plans page:

"We stand by our quality by offering a full 30 day money back guarantee on all plans. In addition, if you ever wish to cancel after this time, we will fully refund any hosting payment made within the last 30 days."

From the features page:

"Unlimited Subdomains"

I'm running my own server at home, but if I had to choose, I would probably go with 000webhost. I used to use their $5 a month plan, and shit worked great. Plenty of features, and unlimited bandwidth and disk space. Plus it comes with a free .com domain.
