So, my dad’s birthday is coming up and I want to get him an mp3 player and do away with all his stacks of CDs, but I really can't decide on one to get him. He doesn't need that many BG, 8 would be more than enough for him. Does anyone know the most dad-friendly mp3 player out there? He is getting up there in age and is very finicky with technology. I swear he breaks his computer at least 3 times a week. He also has big fingers. I think he might get frustrated with the touch sensitivity of an ipod and also wouldn't want to deal with the swivel of a normal ipod… But if other people have parents who use ipods and love them; maybe that can prove me wrong.

Budget wise, I was thinking no more than 170$. But depending on the product, I may be flexible. I still want to find the best possible deal.

I was thinking about an 8gb Zune.. but I personally do not have any experience with Zunes, so I'm not sure how they work and if my father can manage it. Does anyone have any experience with the new Sony Walkman?

8gb is 150, and 16gb is 180. Very user friendly. Now it comes with a camera, that takes good pictures and videos. Also it uses itunes. Itunes make it a breeze to rip cd's onto the computer. If you have used an ipod and itunes before, then you know all about syncing. You can choose wether to leave it on or not. I personally leave it off, so stuff can be on my ipod and not my computer. Teach him how to use it once and im sure he will understand. Or pay 200 dollars and get an 8gb ipod touch, which really is a mini computer. Thousands of useful apps, like internet. And if you want, you could get it engraved! you can put any little message you want, "carved"(lasered) into the back. but that isnt a good idea for resale. Apple ftw!

I'd say the ipod touch over the nano. You'd just have to show them where things are the first time they use it. With the nano/classic you have to know how to navigate pretty well, if you land on the wrong "page" you have to know how to go back and forth.

The only concern I have about the ipod nano and the ipod touch is that I don't think he'd like the swivel navigation on the nano, nor the touch screen of the ipod touch. But I might have to go towards a touch screen if I can't find something with buttons that will be big enough for his fingers. But he really doesn't need anything fancy.

Does anyone have the new Sony Walkman S Series? It didn't seem to have a bad review on CNet, but it didn't have an amazing one either. Just that it was a solid mp3 player, and still a good choice.

No the wheel is so much better for big fingers then small little arrows like on a phone. Itouch is 30 out of your budget right? I still say iPod nano all the way.

I hear sound quality is better on Sony's, but I don't think your dad would really care.

I don't think iPods would be parent friendly. Like you said, he doesn't need anything fancy.


My dad is able to use mine. He is probably more challenged in terms of technology than yours. I also feel like I have much more control with the scroll wheel thingy. :3
