So in my Psychology class I'm doing a project on Asian Stereotypes.
Where did these stereotypes begin?
Like:
1 Where did the sterotype of Asians being horrible drivers come from?
2 Where did the whole "Asians are excellent in math" come from?
3 All asians are smart?
etc etc etc.

& how could I, if it were possible, go back into the past & change these?
Help me out please?

Im pretty sure this isn't the answer you're looking for, but I'll say it anyway. Most stereotypes, if not all of them, come from ignorance. Many people develop prejudices based on 1 encounter with a person or group of people, and claim whatever conflict that happens to be caused by every single person represented by that 1 person. Im not sure how long its been going on, probably since ancient times. But I think that if everyone gained some type of knowledge about asians and the many different countries that are in Asia like Japan, China, Russia, and even Iraq, there would be a fair less amount of stereotypes.

don't asian countries score really well in math in general? _unsure.gif i mean yeah i know it's a stereotype and not all asians are good at math. if asians DO test better in math though, then i don't see how the stereotype "comes from ignorance".

i was in a math club and this is what my group looked like

xmas.gifxmas.gifxmas.gifxmas.gifxmas.gifseasonal0.gifxmas.gifxmas.gifxmas.gif

i duno where the bad driving thing comes from. i've seen a lot of bad driving asians but i've seen a lot of bad driving other races too. it doesn't take much to piss me off when driving though so who knows.

all asians definitely aren't smart, this myth can be disregarded after about 10 minutes on cb.

When I said it comes from ignorance, I meant ignorance on behalf of those dishing out the sterotypes/stereotypical beliefs. Most of us judge without actually knowing someone, thus leading to steereotypes. Ignorant = To not know.

Stereotypes aren't all bad... they help people make quick generalizations and categorizations. Say there are zero stereotypes; your brain would be on overdrive trying to place everything in its right place simultaneously.

Anyway, I don't have any real idea of how these Asian stereotypes were formed, but I strongly believe that the self-fulfilling prophecy has a lot to do with spreading them. Non-Asians directly and indirectly push these beliefs onto the Asians (eg. treating them like they're math geniuses), and Asians gain meta-stereotypes (ie. beliefs regarding stereotype others hold about them), causing them to work towards that stereotype.

Y'know?

Anyone know which country people are referring to when stating "Asians are smart"? Because Asia is a huge continent but people are normally referring to japanese and chinese citizens when I hear it. Imagine if they were referring to people like sudaam hussein, osama bin laden, etc.

Some stereotypes I think are true. Why you think Usain Bolt is the fastest man we've seen on a track field?

BAHAHA.

Just like there is always a bit of truth in every rumor there is always a bit of truth in every stereotype. I live in a Canadian city with 95% Asian population and let me tell you driving is NOT fun.
shrug.gif No offense or anything. I'm Asian.

Nah, the drivers there aren't bad because they're Asian. They're bad because they're Canadian. Probably think they're driving a zamboni or something.

Let me start out by saying this only occurs in the US:

1. Because you often look at the driver that just cut you off and discover that they're Asian.
2. Because they often do well in Math.
3. Refer back to number 2.

Okinawans, generally, are pretty bad drivers.

thing is, you kinda have to be a bad driver in asia, think about how many cars + people there are. cutting someone off would be more viewed as smart than dickish

Asians are stereotyped as being better at math because they are better at math, according to the test scores. That's not to say that all Asians are better than all non-Asians, but most of them are better.

If you want to know why Asians are statistically better at math than non-Asians, both in their native Asian countries and in other countries, then read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. He makes a very compelling argument about how cultural differences can affect everything about a child's success.
