First off, I'd prefer this to stay here and not moved to News because the real reason I'm posting this is to get a feel for what next gen console would be the best choice for me (um, and Iz, of course).

Hope Fades for PS3 as a Comeback Player
In Battle of the Game Consoles, Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox Widen Leads Over Sony's PlayStation
By DAISUKE WAKABAYASHI

TOKYO -- For most of this year, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 videogame console seemed finally to be taking off after a slow start. The PS3, trailing Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles, was closing in on the No. 2 Xbox 360, with new games and quarterly sales growth at twice the speed of last year.

But early results from this holiday season aren't promising. U.S. sales of the PS3 fell 19% last month from a year earlier, while sales doubled for the Wii console and rose 8% for the Xbox 360, according to research firm NPD. Analysts say they expect PS3 sales for this month to be flat or lower than last year, while sales for its rivals are likely to rise. And Sony may not reach its goal of selling 10 million PS3 consoles in the fiscal year through March, analysts say.

...

more here

Last year (2008, so almost last year) was a very financially straining year, so I decided to wait until I receive my tax returns to get a new console. I had my mind on a Wii for a while, but after visiting a friend who has a 360, I'm sort of conflicted now. Then I had read a few comments on Amazon (I was browsing through some games) and a few reviewers were singing PS3 praises and I became even more conflicted.

I'm sure many of you have one (if not more than one) of these, so I was hoping that people might find a bit of time to give me their take. Also, does a potential financial fallout have much of an impact? I mean, I'd hate to spend so much money on something that will possibly be obsolete in the near future. Maybe "obsolete" isn't the best word to use, but I'm not sure how else to phrase it.

I swear, I'm not always so cautious when it comes to game related purchases. I bought the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox without much thought. It's just that the new equipment seems like more of an investment as a whole.

If you could be specific as to why/if you have a preference, that would be great. :)

Not really. It depends on what you're after. PS3 has the graphics, and that's about it.

Not even, there have been 100s of comparisons between the systems and the graphics are nearly identical.

You should have read the specs. Aside from the digital camera and larger screen size (the resolution is still the same), it's the same as the DS. Anyway, if you havn't used a DS before. I assure you that you'll love it. There are pleanty of great games available for the DS. Be sure to check out Phantazy Star Zero comming out Qt3 this year.

That's exactly what I said. It's idiots like these why Sony lied in the first place. These idiots just eat up their bullshit without thinking twice. It makes sense, though. Idiots know what idiots will believe.

Sony just spews bullshit non stop. It's all so hilarious! I don't see how anyone couldn't see past it.

Click here. This is exactly why they're losing the console race. They're stupid, arrogant, and don't care about their consumers. I remember good ol' Krazy Ken Kutaragi saying "We don't care. People will buy anything that has 'Sony' branded on it." It's ridiculous, and that's why I hate Sony. Anyone who follows them is basically accepting their ass rape.

laugh.gif This guy would've been BROKE. Ever since day 1 of its release, I've been able to find one. I hate Tretton. I think he's the stupidest one of all. I loved that interview EGM had with him. Classic. He sounded like such a jackass. HAHA. His name's Jack Tretton. LAWLZ. Get it? Jackass?? Oh, nevermind...

the ps3 has something that Xbox does not have..which is
BLURAY, and Internet on it..

well i have read and heard straight from the Microsoft executives, that the next Xbox will NOT have Bluray because of the hardware and Mechanics that they will have to go through just to get it in...

but thats a good thing because they say that it will make the xbox More frequently Break-Down... and we do not want that..

thats your fault then... have you seen the watts on the ps3 like how much it uses...?

it uses up to 380watts of power! and the PS2 had only 45watts!
and the Xbox 360 only uses 160watts..

I completely agree, it's a great system but it lacks in exclusive titles and multiplayer gaming. The 360 is the gamers system of choice because it's amazing for playing games.

Sony makes many good products, but they have their fair share of luxury garbage (vaio pcs). I have a 1,600 dollar sony dream theater and I love it to death.

$100 dollars?! o.O;

Majority of new developments have contracts with certain ISPs. The development I live in has a contract with Direct TV, the contract is in regards to servicing VOIP, Satellite T.V., and Fiber Optics Broadband. I pay $120 for both Satellite T.V. and 10MB Download / 10MB Upload broadband internet.

And ya my home has ethernet cables coming out of the wall in each room so I can just hard wire to my desktop :P

You can find the Mbps by dividing both numbers by 1024. You would have:
3.03125/0.78125 = 3MB/0.8MB = Down/Up

That's not fast, but the good news is that DSL is a dedicated line and you don't have to share with anyone else.

Any land line broadband is run via fiber. Verizon is the just the first company to use the word to market their service. Think about it. They advertised Dial-up then Cable and finally Fiber, yet cable and fiber are both ran using fiber and both are broadband technologies. It's simply a gimmick developed by the companies that sell the product. Like using "HD" or the letter "i" in front of a product name to make it appear awesome.

Call of Duty 4 is enough. Now that Modern Warfare 2 is announced, that argument doesn't stand. Also, the lineup for this years PS3 exclusives should be close to matching that of Microsofts'.

COD4 is for all the systems. Doesn't count.

The infrastructure surrounding Microsoft's XBOX Live is far more secure than the PS3. There is less cheating. This makes or breaks competitive multi-player games. All traffic routed over XBOX Live is run through a massive encrypted VPN. Packets aren't able to be edited, all of the hardware firmware is encrypted except for the DVD-ROM drive firmware. I'm not saying it's impossible to cheat, but it's pretty damn hard.

Example of a PSN failure: Phantasy Star Universe
Phantasy Star Universe was released for the PS2, PC, and XBOX360. It was butchered because it was hacked not only on the PSN but over the PC as well. Why? Because the developers of the game were in charge of the network security and infrastructure. While the PS2 and PC versions of the game died due to an inflated in game economy the XBOX360 version of the game flourished.

Security is important to the competitive gaming market because it's consumers will do anything in their power to win. Even if they have to ruin the game in the process.

Regarding exclusive titles. To be honest, I have purchased and played most of the blockbuster PS3 exclusives. Here are a few that I can remember off the top of my head:
  • Drake's Uncharted
  • Little Big Planet
  • MGS4
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • SOCOM
The only one I have ever been really impressed with was MGS4. That game is probably the best game I have played in a long long time. In fact, it was better than any 360 game I have ever played. I really loved that game, but one game doesn't make or break a system. Especially if the only thing going for it is its single player mode.
