Took a sociology class during my senior year in highschool. And one very interesting, or at least what i thought was interesting, question that our teacher asked us was our opinion on what we thought about our spouse being the primary supporter of the family?
Just wondering your guys views/opinions on your wife being the primary supporter of your family. Do you care if she brings home the bacon? I admit, that personally, it would take a toll on my ego if my wife was the primary supporter. But, at the same time I think I could live with it. |

For being the woman making the dough: I wouldn't feel ashamed of being the one who provides for the family. That's what mothers are suppose to do. They're suppose to provide for their family. It wouldn't be bad if the husband helped out and provided some support.
If I was a man who had a woman making the dough: I would probably feel a bit ashamed that she's working so hard to provide for the family, so I'd probably start working, helping out and trying to be the primary supporter. There's nothing wrong with having a woman being the supporter of the family, though. And of course it would hurt my manhood. :(. |

I was tempted to move this for a second, lol. I think it should be even. I don't think that the man should be supporting the family financially and I don't think the woman should either. It doesn't really matter who's making more money, but as long as someone's doing something. If I was married I could never be a stay at home mom and let him support the family, I would feel too guilty.

For some reason, I could see this turning into a debate down the road.... With that being said, I wouldn't want my wife to work. I grew up in a single family home, and although my mom gave me the best of everything, I know how hard she had to work to get it. I would never allow a woman who is married to me to work that hard. Part of being a man means that you are supposed to provide for your family and take care of it, and if you aren't doing that, then there is something wrong with you. May I also say, that it makes you look even worse if you are black and you are a man sitting on your ass while your woman is out getting the bread.

i agree with dee
i'd have no problem with my wife working, or being more successful as far as money goes. as long as we make enough to support ourselves/family it doesn't matter to me. it just works out how it works out, and if it works out that she's in a higher paying job than me i won't really care. i'll just be happy that she's reached that level. my parents both supported my family my whole life, so i'm not used to a family where one person works and one doesn't. i guess i would say my dad was more financially supportive, but that's really just the nature of their jobs, not because he felt he had to do that, i don't think. architect > teacher $$$ wise. it wouldn't hurt my ego to have a successful wife, it would probably help it. |

It doesn't really matter who's making more money, but as long as someone's doing something. i think i meant something like, you both have jobs, but it's just that she's making more money than you. Asking guys if they'd care that their wife is making more than them.. cause in reality im sure a lot of men would have a problem with that. not saying that i have a problem with it haha And i think i fall along the same side as Doublej. I too grew up in a house raised by a single mother. In the future, i would never let my wife work as hard as my mother did. I'd treat her like a queen lol |

What's wrong with having the girl making more money even though they both have jobs? It takes two to tango. I'm not for the man/woman bullshit mindset that the man should support the family while the woman is decomposing at home. It'd be offensive to me if anyone were to tell me to stay at home and "relax" because I'm a woman.

I am not saying stay locked up in the house, but I would never want my girl to work as hard as my mother had to. I guess a lot of the mindset definitely depends on how you grew up.

My mom is a housewife; I don't want to follow her footsteps. I don't know what your mom did, but I like working and doing things. But the point is that I don't see what's the big deal if the girl brings home the dough. Good for her? We need more women in engineering, and shit like this. |

Oh my mom was the only one who brought home the dough, because daddy ran out on us. With that being said, after witnessing how hard my mom had to work to give me the best of everything, I would never want my wife to work that hard. I don't mind if my wife wanted to work, but I wouldn't want her to think that she has to be the one to hold the family on her shoulders either.

I personally would hate to see my wife working long hours and a hard job. I don't mind her having a job, I just don't want her to work hard, because then i will feel guility about her working hard.

I feel like i'll provide as long as i have to, its NO BIG DEAL hey living with two incomes is better than one ANY DAY.
The only objection i'd have to working is when i have a baby, but by then i should be financially secured enough to stay home for at the very least one year and afford it without being up to our necks in bills. I personally would hate to see my wife working long hours and a hard job. I don't mind her having a job, I just don't want her to work hard, because then i will feel guilty about her working hard. No one can MAKE you work over 40 hours. If she chooses to do overtime thats on her. I would WANT (if i had one) my wife to be successful. just a thought. ![]() |

i don't think it should matter if the wife is bringing in more money than the husband unless the husband isn't working at all or helping out with the house or anything.
basically it'd only be a problem for me if he was leeching. |

I wouldn't mind it. I know I'm a bit old school, so I would think that it's the man who should be the bread winner and have at least the home under his name.
But if the woman makes more than the man, then whatever... cool beans. |

If I were the one to make money, I'd kinda of feel a tad superior but I wouldn't mind. I think I'd prefer it to be even or the guy make more than me. I'm a little old fashioned.
