is anyone else paranoid when it comes to updating or changing something on ur computer?

i am, i don't know what my deal is but i always put off updating things. i think because my general feeling is that if it isn't broken, i shouldn't try to fix it. i'm always afraid i'm going to do an update, and something is going to go wrong and screw me over. i just updated the firmware on my comp, finally. of course, it had to have all these stupid directions about holding some button until something else happened. those kinda directions make me even more paranoid about screwing up. then my comp made some loud beeping noise that nearly gave me a heart attack. we survived it though.

so yeah, are u one of those people who loves to keep everything up to date at all times, or someone who puts it off out of fear or just laziness?


oh yeah, and i hate updates because the majority of the time it's not anything noticeably different. that pisses me off, i wanna see that i accomplished something.

Uh, yes. I hate it when I have to upgrade something on my computer. I have terrible luck when it comes to technology, so updates will usually come with more features (for a program) or some minor fix in my computer system. Pisses me off. I'm not only paranoid when it comes to updating, I am annoyed by some of the newest additions. It doesn't help that I know little about certain file types or precautions I should take or remedies in the case something goes astray.

Unless it is imperative that I get an upgrade, then I see no use for it.

same here, then when i when i tell someone more knowledgeable about my problem, they give me a long list of "maintenance" that i should have done beforehand. how the f**k was i supposed to know that?

i really need to back up everything on my computer also, but of course, i'm paranoid of doing that as well.

Oh, yeah. I don't have the patience to back-up my computer, and I don't like it when people tell me to back-up my computer in the worst case scenario: ending my life. Which would mean if I lost all of my files, my computer crashed and burned, and it's just a piece of plastic.

Tutorials online usually don't help, either, because no one ever answers your questions. If in the case I have 10 trojans, I do not want to screw up other parts of my computer that were fine before because of poor instructions.

my last laptop, i actually did end up losing every single thing on it. well...maybe i could have saved it, if i had put more effort into it. the little place where u stick the charger thing in, (note my advanced knowledge of technical terminology) well something was screwed up, so that it couldn't recognize my charger. so once my battery charge was gone, my comp was just dead. so i went through this mad rush to get as much off my computer as i possibly could before my remaining battery went dead. which also reminds me, that i hate computer battery readings, because it will tell u that u have 40 minutes left, but in reality, u have about 15. so my battery went dead, about 20 minutes ahead of time, and i lost everything, and then proceeded to rip my screen off out of frustration. so that made it even more unlikely that i'd get my stuff back. some guy said something or other about trying to hook my laptop up to another monitor, but i don't have time for all that mess. i bought a mac, and transfered my songs from my ipod back onto it. so i saved all that music, at least.

anyway, this story is pointless, just to say that i've risked everything once and lost it, and somehow i'm idiotic enough to be risking it again without a back up.

I'm that way as well. Usually with any update, the company of the product provides a brief description or a list of what new features and patches the update includes. If you can live without it, don't update. I always check that out first and then do a little google search to see if there are any issues with the update before I myself update. You should try doing that. It's helpful.

this reminds me to update my McAfee...yes, i hate updating. i always thing it's going to do something to my computer. =/

I hate updating stuff. I think some of it is because I'm on dialup, so to update things means clogging the phoneline for 14 hours. I like it that my antivirus updates it's self whenever I'm online... because if it prompted me to, I'd probably click deny. iTunes used to ALWAYS have that thing that poped up to update it. It annoyed me.

Everything else I leave to someone else to do it. If the computer breaks it's not my fault.

One time I did an update for the sound on my laptop. It f**ked it up and my speakers weren't working. Luckily, there is the system restore. I just don't understand why Windows was recommending an update that would do that to my laptop. Haha. But yeah, I am not paranoid. I just assume it can be reversed if something goes wrong.

No, not really. I change aspects of my computer, hardware or software, all of the time. I don't worry about what it will do, as i am always protected. i installed service pack three for XP as soon as it was "available." I change my computer's hardware at least twice a year. I continuously change the interface i use for my computer. However, all "essential" items are stored on separate drives, and not the main drive. it's statistically more likely that your main, Windows drive will fail than any other, as it seems far more activity -- spinning up and down all of the time.

Depends on what is needing the update. Windows updates don't concern me much, for example. However, I refuse to update iTunes. The last time I updated iTunes it was just all kinds of f**ked up.
