Ok so I just read a few posts in mod perf concerning mods not being able to answer questions about the tracker.

I understand that Jusun is the one that made the thing, and only he would know how to answer certain questions because no one else on staff is... educated enough about the subject...

but dont you guys think that come time the next hiring round, you could try and find people that have a better working knowledge of the IT aspect of the site, as well as how to use the forum application expertly? (proactively, because i understand that your perfect mod squad may or may not apply for modship)

i mean even if they dont have a lot of posts, maybe you can give the person a "special" status for only IT related issues?

just a side note; in the past we've always made sure there were people (at least one person) on the staff that were technically literate.

Which, imo, is why Josh would be a great candidate.

Well, I suppose that could somewhat be Dani.

I think if the administrators and other staff members are so against hiring Josh, then Dani (if she's willing) should be considered for some training or something.

But if she's got time and she's willing, I don't see why not.

laughable.

i think the person who would fill the position would have to learn on their own time, and be self sufficient enough to do the research on their own.

yes, Jusun would be the best. That's the problem, though. We'd have to wait until Jusun comes back to actually be able to begin any training. Which is why it seemed like Josh would be a good pick for right now, but everyone thinks we should "give him time" so he can improve his behavior or something along those lines. But by the time that time passes by, more questions will have come, and we'll look as stupid as ever.

Yup that seems to be the consensus. Makes me wonder if they read/understood what he said on the matter...

Jusun really likes Josh too, thats a plus XD

He always thought Josh would be good as a mod -laughs-

Anyway, the only thing is Dani has her A+ but she doesn't know the same things Josh does..that was just the thing. Josh would have to further explain in to that. I got lost when he was explaining it last night.

computer repair is not the same as web development. i mean that much is obvious. is computer repair where dani's expertise lies? im not sure.

Nope.

Unless someone wants to waste their time helping people and maybe just maybe get a new status later to get some recognition.

Idno. Maybe he would reconsider if he didn't have to work for it, and was thanked for his work? I think it was a complete asinine approach to tell someone that would only benefit the site that he would have to work for it, when in turn he would be taking time out of his life to answer questions etc.

But yeah, I assume Dani is mainly into computer repair. She has her A+

From what I understand, Dani's expertise lies in PC trouble shooting and repair. She works at Staples in the PC Repair department. It's a respectable job. She also knows how to setup websites on the side.

My field is closely related and yet totally different. I'm a network administrator. I don't do as much web based coding as Dani does, but I create programs in VB script and know a whole boat load about IP Addressing and application integration on in a client sever setting.

If you wanted to think about it in a way that makes sense more sense to the average person you could split it up into job classes. Kind of like a video game. Don't quote me on this. I'm only trying to help you understand the probable differences in the extent of our knowledge. There are several basic technology fields. all of which need an understanding of basic computer skills. At a certain point, you basically choose to or are naturally driven to specialize in a certain field because you don't' have enough time to learn all of them. In fact, learning all of them would just be a complete waste. You can't learn everything quite frankly there is just to much to know. You need to specialize in order to make money. Anyway, Eventually you spread your self out in different areas or specialize to an even grater extent to meet the needs of specific job you are seeking to quire.
  • Basic Computer Skills
    • Multimedia
      • Graphic Design
      • 3D Modeling
      • Etc...
    • Information Technology
      • WAN/LAN Protocols and Design
      • Telecommunications
      • Etc...
    • Programming
      • Web Design
      • Software Development
      • Database
      • Etc...
    • Electronics Technician
      • Computer Hardware Development(This field requires lots of math... if you aren't a human calculator don't even bother. You won't survive.)
      • Etc..
"PC Troubleshooting and Repair" is like a very basic understanding of each field. It's just enough understanding in each field so that you can learn how to isolate a problem and fix it.

Keep in mind this is only an example so you can get a grasp on the extent of our knowledge. Eventually you reach a certain point where you need to combine the skills of each area to meet the skills required for a certain job. So like, my job would be a combination of:
  • Programming
  • WAN & LAN Design & Protocols
  • Computer Hardware
  • Telecommunications(Because of IP Telephony)
  • Programming(leaning more towards software development and Database Design)
Right now, I'm looking for a solution for our company that will auto-push applications and updates onto our user's computers so that way they don't have to install them on their own. We are attempting to remove human error from our system. I'm so sick of receiving service calls from people who make tiny little errors.

Steven, that was very tactless of you. Josh clearly did not deserve that report.

Maybe in the future, we will remove that report, but I'm not making any promises. Or am I? I'm not really sure. But perhaps. Maybe.
