Me and a friend of mine like to get into deep discussions about religion and so on and so forth. Just so that ya'll know where I stand, I am a christian...non denominational. I dont completely believe in certain aspects of organized religion...church is not my forte much lately. Anyways, to the point...

We were discussing how it seems to us that atheists seem to be angry. Either at Christians or just at the world in general. I like to do research on different religions and have explored many different options. I am simply inquiring about atheists just so I can understand more.

Do you think atheists are angry?
Are you atheist? Are you angry?

Explain why and tell me a little about what you believe so that I can understand.

Once again, please be respectful in everything you say and do me a favor and put a little thought into it...dont respond with a simple statement like "christians are hypocrites" or something like that.

Thanks...

I actually think that believers are the angry ones. They insult you for not believing in God and whatnot. Atheists, Agnostics ... aren't afraid, we're happy people.

anyways; are atheists afraid?

Yep I guess so, once you become a mature adult, you'll see what's really important, wishfully at least.

Yeah, it could go both ways.

I know kids who's moms won't let your hang out with them if you're not Christian. Or they get disappointed at you or something.

And then I there are probably atheists out there that get annoyed.

What does becoming an adult has to do with this?

"What's really important" doesn't always include religion...

"What's really important" (at least to me) = education, money, family, friends, reaching my personal goals.

And as for "Are Atheists angry?" or "Are Atheists afraid?", stop generalising. One Atheist might be afraid and one Atheist might not. It's like if I said:

Bikers are rough.

One biker might rob stores and get in fights when another one lives with his parents and cries whenever he watches animal rescue shows on Animal Planet. And then both go to the bar at 11 at night and get smashed where you're sitting there thinking "I better not mess with that guy!"

Sure there's some Atheists that are angry with their life, so they stop believing in God, but then there's your regular old neighbor who's a counselor of the girl scout troupe and head of the PTA who's perfectly content with a life without God.

Eeek... where do you guys keep seeing me post something about religion? xKatt, this is what I was speakin of importance:

QUOTE
I'm very detailed oriented, I must know everything of everything as much as humanly possible. My mind is meant for something more than sexual thoughts, who's the best actor, who's the best musician etc.. I don't like having an idle mind, or a mind full of useless thoughts. Useless meaning it has nothing to do with my personal life in order to advance.

See... nothing about religion lol
Just expanding your mind for the sake of your wisdom, that's all.

Interesting. You'd laugh at the expense of another... in a debate. No wonder many of these folks don't take you seriously.

Who cares, I don't. Out of everyone here, Arjuna is truly the only one I respect. Everyone else needs to catch up. And yes... a lot of the times I laugh at the expense of another, in a debate. A lot of times I wonder if these kids are smoking crack.

Ah well, it's only fair if you do... all the others are wondering if you're smoking something, too.

Back on topic? Is there anything else we should talk about that hasn't been said? *shrugs*

Yes, atheists are spiteful people who have no meaning in their imaginary-God-less lives.
-_-"

Personally, I found that kinda offensive.

I am an atheist.
I was raised as a Roman Catholic, but there were many many times in my life (even as a very young child) that I doubted what the Church thought me.

I remember being six years old, and learning a lot about god in CCD. I would come home at night and read the bible and pray before bed, because I thought that if I wasn't "holy enough" for "God Almighty", I would be killed in my sleep, or just be punished by God someday, somehow. Everyone told me that god was forgiving, but I was young and didn't understand things fully.

Basically, I was scared into being "good and holy" because of religion.

Looking back, those were probably some of the most mentally traumatic times in my life; I was afraid of hell, afraid of the afterlife, I thought so much about death that it actually sent me into a form of depression.

As I grew older, I learned more about science; the earth, the sun, the universe, evolution, biology...
I found much more joy and amazement in these things than I ever had with Religion. Religion seemed so old fashioned, so naive, so... Ignorant. So I kinda gave up on it for a while.

Then, last summer, I spent my vacation out in Yellowstone National Park & the Deserts in Utah... And I guess you could say I was "enlightened".

I really got to see, for the first time in my life, some of the most insane, spectacular and powerful forces of nature. I really came to see & understand how truly insignificant humans were on this planet. We've been existing on this earth for merely a blip in time. We're so small, so... Irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

& Maybe some people find that to be sad. I don't know. Maybe it makes some poeple angry; maybe that's why people think "atheists are angry".

All I know is, the thought that I was just a microscopic blip in the grand scheme of things - comforted me.

There was no mistake that I could make that would alter the universe. There was nothing that I could (or would) do to damn me to an eternal hell. I wasn't that important. Why was I so special?

And this made me happy. I was at peace. I felt free. I could just be myself, go with the flow, and not have to worry about things so much.

So, no. I am an atheist, but I am not angry at the world.

I love the world & the universe and everything else out there more than any ancient religion that a human could try and shove down my throat.

Basically, I don't believe that Humans could possibly understand the way everything works. They couldn't possibly come close to understanding any god, or any other great power.

We are small. We know very little. We need to just go with it and try to take care of what we have.
