Ok so recently in school i was walking down the main corridor to over hear a conversation about making yourself sick, the girls were dicussing what they use, toothbrush handles, fingers.
These girls where as fat as my little finger and they where discussing how to lose weight by vomitting I just wanted to let people know that this can be VERY harmful to your insides! When food has reached your belly the stomach acid gets to work desolving it ready for digestion, the walls of your stomach are adapted for the acid, but when you make yourself sick it is not only the food that comes up, it is the acid too. This is harmful because it comes into contact with parts of your insides that arent adapted are begins to desovle them instead. Your really need to consider if you do actually need to lose weight or weather it is your consience saying "I must lose Weight". A good way to check is to log on to google and search 'Calculate BMI' click on one of the links and you are asked to enter your weight and height and this gives you a number to refer to a chart displayed. I hope this helped people who are struggling with eating disorders. x |

I'm sure most people know all this info...
I find it quite sad however, how so many girls are starving themselves or making themselves vomit or whatever, just because it's a trend. It IS considered "cool" to be like, unhappy with yourself, even if you're just pretending. |

o_o I don't think it's a concern about being cool anymore. ;x I think it's just a concern of how they look in vain. Or maybe of how the world around them is so fat, they're afraid they might become fat as well so they try to lose some weight/keep themselves skinny but then it all becomes an obsession to become skinnier and skinnier. I think a lot of people know this, but it doesn't scare them due to their obsession. ;x

^see that just really ticked me off.
For the most part eating disorders aren't to look beautiful to other people, to look cool or for other "vain" reasons. It's about control. Being able to control what comes into your body and in the case of bulimia-- what goes out. It has nothing to do with trends. |

You mean forcing yourself to throw up everything you just ate in order to force your body to lose weight un-naturally is bad for you?

Have you ever had a serious eating disorder? Or was bulimic? Hate to be a 'lil grammar Nazi but it should not be "Or was bulimic." Was should be replaced by "been" or "ever been." Again, I'm only doing that to make your posts look more intelligent. Whenever I see a post with piss poor spelling or mis use of grammar it just causes me to focus on that one point instead of looking for the meaning of the post or what you're trying to convey. Thanks :) |

I hate when people think it's just because you are vain. Those are the people that add to the problem. Have you ever had a serious eating disorder? Or was bulimic? Why is that any of your business? (Yes, I know she answered the question, but it really wasn't your place) |

Because I was asking. I had a friend who was pretty much obsessed with her looks and she kept saying she was fat and how boys didn't like fat girls. it annoyed me as hell, but I didn't really think she'd become serious about it. I know what she said is true (about being able to control herself, because I had a eating disorder that had nothing to do with the way I look at myself), but it's not the only reason people have eating disorders. Control is the main factor though, but what caused my friend's eating disorder is her vanity. She did a lot in 6th grade just to make herself look prettier than everyone else (she looked like a freaking high schooler and i believe she even dated some?) and I guess she couldn't control herself and took it a step further.

It's not always an obsession with attention. Often times it springs from self-disgust.

I think its a trend, just like cutting yourself and being Emo, the people who do this need to get over there obsession with attention, cry me a river. just like you being obsessed with condoms and sex being a trend. excuse me, but sticking your finger down your throat isn't a f**king trend. neither is cutting. people do things for reasons. the people that do it are actually the more mature ones whom you would least expect, which is why i understand why you think it's a trend. you're simply not mature enough to understand the reasoning behind anything. how is it a cry for attention when nobody knows about the people that honestly have disorders. you aren't very educated on anything having to do with pretty much anything, so it's probably best you don't act like it. it'd make you look an entirely lot smarter, which would be a benifit for you. not typing in fragments and using correct grammar would also help a bit, but i suppose it's too difficult for someone of your education. this thread is really starting to piss me off. seriously, who are you to judge anyone. have you ever experienced it? |

I'm sure most people know all this info... agreed. i never found it as a good way to "lose weight." in health, we learned that 70% of the food (or some percent like that) is already "soaked up" into the body. so youre really not even getting rid of a lot of it. |

you become malnourished, and you're constantly hungry. you actually retain water, loose hair, ruin the enamel on your teeth, and you can develop a serious stomach condition called gastritis. do you think someone would go through all of that for attention?

QUOTE I think its a trend, just like cutting yourself and being Emo, the people who do this need to get over there obsession with attention, cry me a river. how dare you, i mean i don't want to sound dramatic but how can you seriously sit there and say that cutting your own skin open is just a way to be popular and fit in with the trends? have you ever done it? because i have been struggling with self injury problems for about 3-4 years so how can you possibly sit there and say that i and everyone else who cuts does it for attention when about 70% of them hide their cuts and their pain from everyone! im sorry but that post was very mean and offensive to me and just hit me square in my heart. and as for the eating disorders yes some may do it for vanity but how does that make it any less than a problem? how can anyone say that just because you do it for attention because you don't get enough or you just want to look better you don't deserve to get better or you don't deserve to hurt? I really despise the kind people that think that they can decide who really has problems and who doesn't expecially people who have never been there. ugh im sorry this prob. doesn't make a lick of sense i just got really angry and my mind flew out the window lol. * i hope anyone who is struggling with any kind of self injurous problem gets help be it drug addiction, cutting, burning, eating disorders or anything else. best of luck* |

Almost everyone already knows this information, and you're suggestion to people with eating disorders to check their BMI or something like that isn't gonna be helpful.
Many people w/ eating disorders obsess over their BMI. They calculate it compulsively and are never satisfied with it cuz most people who have eating disorders think they're obese even if they aren't. If they fall into overweight, they absolutely hate themselves. If they fall into normal, they still think that they're horribly obese and obsess over the fact that they're not the lowest of the normal catagory. they think most of normal is still fat. If they fall into underweight, they just think that everyone else is f**king crazy and fat. That they must have adjusted it because everyone in this country is so obese. They think that their body fat levels are still high, they must just have too little muscle mass or something like that. They twist everything around to mean that they're fat. It doesn't matter what they look like, they'll always see themselves as fat and ugly because most people with eating disorders have some form of body dysmorphic disorder which means that when they look in a mirror, they don't see what other people see when they look at them. They see themselves as fatter and uglier than they really are. That turned into a bit of a rant... |
