BEIJING — A six-year-old girl was bitten to death by a tiger at a south China zoo while posing for a picture with the animal, state media reported Friday.

The girl, identified only as Ruixin, was standing behind the tiger with her mother and four other relatives when it attacked at a zoo in Yunnan province on Thursday, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The local Chuncheng Evening News reported on its Web site that the tiger attacked the girl shortly after the flash went off on her uncle's camera. The tiger's paw shot out and grabbed Ruixin, pulling her head into its mouth, it said.

Five zoo staff beat the tiger with wood sticks and a bench until it released the girl after about one minute, it said. Ruixin's mother was also bitten on the hand while struggling to save her daughter.

The girl was taken to a local hospital but rescue efforts failed, Xinhua said.

It said the animal was one of six tigers that perform at a circus in the zoo. The photo service, has been suspended, it said.

Phones at the Yuantongshan Zoo in Yunnan's capital of Kunming, where the attack occurred, rang unanswered. It was not known if the tiger had been killed following the attack.

This makes me wonder how that tiger could've been one of the performing cats at the circus. sad.gif That poor girl, may she rest in peace. I'm definately not getting near those tigers whenever I go to a zoo.

RIP to Ruixin.

Shouldn't the tiger have have one of those chained collars on it with a trained animal handler nearby?

that is honestly really sad and its sort of unnerving that an animal that vicious would be allowed to "pose for a photo". even then, wouldn't it have to be safely locked away? tigers do attack people. the zoo workers need to think harder about their security.

Was the tiger not inside a cage or something? Poor girl.

They shouldnt allow animals like that to be close enough to hurt someone.

What were the zookeepers thinking? No matter how "trained" an animal like a tiger could be, you shouldn't stand next to it without protection.

^ I believe I agree to that as well.

Oh my. Her head in the tiger's mouth after the flash from the camera. I always knew something will go wrong with animals after a flash. Maybe that's the reason why I don't like taking pictures of animals like that.

RIP Ruixin. :(

The tiger shouldn't have been forced out of its natural habitat and placed in a zoo in the first place, exploited solely for entertainment.

Sue me for being all in for animal liberation -
Many people don't know the abuse that is inflicted upon the animals - it's no surprise at all that the tiger took the girl out. It was most likely caused by the tiger being in a foreign environment and the abuse and confinement it's forced to now live with.

I'm sorry, but as unfortunate as it was, you can't blame the damn tiger.
So yes, as mentioned here before, blame the damn parents. Most of all, blame the jerks that put the tiger there in the first place...just don't blame the tiger for being...well, a tiger.

That's a dumb thing for them to think. Tigers aren't domesticated or friendly animals. Don't be mad at the tiger. If you were the tiger you'd do the same thing. Shame on the parents.

i agree also they should have put a muzzle on it so atleast it couln't hurt the child easily and there should have been a keeper there really it's the zoos fault
