In my family, only the ones that faithfully believe that elders should give children red envelopes, get them.

With money from relatives, only the boys get the red envelopes. My grandfather is the only one outside of the family who gives red envelopes to us and he only likes boys, not girls. So I don't get any and my little brother does.

i think it has something to do with the reason people go to temple on midnight too.
