Here is a bulletin that was sent out on myspace about how all of the upperclassmen hate the freshmen:

When you come into high school in the fall, please don't try to
act cool, because what's cool to you usually isn't cool with the
upper classmen. stick to your middle school friends unless you know upper classmen that will get you in with other upper classmen so you don't get killed. Please DO NOT stand in the middle of the halls & talk to your friends because the seniors, juniors, and sophomores can, & most likely will, push you out of the way & call you a stupid freshman. you will get hurt. ALSO don't walk as slow as hell in the hallways. most likely you WILL get screamed at and told to move the hell out of the way. If you take an upperclassmens' lunch table they will make you move and if you don't listen you will get yelled at. Try to find your locker the first week of school so you dont have to carry your entire locker in your really "cool" backpacks. STAY iN A CHiLD [FRESHMANS]PLACE! <-- and stop typing like that cause it's NOT cool no matter how much you think it is..cause fact is...you dont matter much =) Homecoming is a time for the returning classes to reunite with their friends and have a good time. it's not for the freshman girls to show off 3/4 of their body and think they look good. in the end, you're just looking like a bunch of sluts and are saying you're willing to subject yourself to being ridiculed for the rest of your freshman year =]
IT'S NOT COOl TO BE LOUD AND THINK YOU'RE CUTE, CAUSE MOST LIKELY YOU WILL GET SHUT DOWN!
NEVER talk back to SENIORS, JUNIORS, or SOPHOMORES. Just dont try it. Don't come there screaming that 10 stuff, 07 WILL shut you down, 08 WILL beat the crap out of you, and 09 WILL bitch slap the hell out of you.

do you hate the freshmen, and do you think it is right to dislike them?

Nope. I think it's pretty elitist to dislike anyone just because he's new at something. Look, we were all new at something at one time. Everyone had their first day of high school. Being new is no reason to hate on people.

Admittedly, I do find some actions of freshman a bit silly. For example, at my college, freshmen get these orange nametags with lanyards during orientation. The nametag has their first name in big letters, and their hometown in slightly smaller letters. Freshmen here wear them all the time, even when they go downtown to parties, for the first week or so of classes every year. It's kind of funny because upperclassmen can easily pick out who is a freshmen and who isn't. Also, freshmen tend to travel in "packs" of about 10-20 students (especially to the cafeteria), so it's really easy to tell who is a freshman, even after they stop using the nametags.

So, yeah, upperclassmen might snigger at stuff like that, because it's kind of funny. But disliking and being mean to people who are new? There's no excuse for that.

I think it's fine to hate freshmens.
But .. the passage that you had provided, i think, is overboard.
That, I don't think is right. But I also don't think that really happens.
I think the stereotypical freshman getting beat up is an exaggeration.
Nothing like that ever happens in my school.
But I do think it's okay to dislike freshmen because, cmon, their annoying.
I mean, I just finished freshman year and even I thought we were annoying.
We think we're all that, and quite frankly, I think we deserved to get our a ss's beat.
Plus, it's a tradition thing, you know?

It isn`t right to hate of freshman unless they`ve done something bad or whatever.. It`s just bassically stereotyping freshmans. That passage was mean.. at my school the students don`t do that, everyone just do their own thing. As long as no one messes with anyone then it`s all good. Freshmans at my school don`t get punked on, they know how to deal with those craps. _smile.gif

freshmen will usually walk in pretending they own the place and they know everything that's going, only to realize none of the upperclassmen and sophs wanna be their friends

It kinda depends. Some of that stuff is really annoying (standing in the middle of the halls; talking really loudly, slow walking, etc).
But I guess it isn't really right to just pick on them. Unless they're doing something annoying.

Eh. I never hated on the freshmen. I didn't appreciate it when I was in 9th grade, so I thought I'd make it easier on them.

But once they start acting like they're the shit, I have to knock them down a peg.

the most annoying thing is when they stand in groups in the halls.

or when they think they're better than you.

I agree. Some of them are okay. But some of them are so stupid and annoying...the block the hallways all the time in our school, like tumours from the walls. Ugh. Some of them I like though, so yeh, it does depend.

Or when you walk home and they group up on the sidewalk so that you can't walk past or around them. Ohhh....go '08.

Haha. I agree. ;x I was a freshman last year and most of our class would just stand in the middle of the damned hallways for no reason; just to talk about nothing but nonsense.

I didn't really mind the freshman hate, cause it was mostly just sophomores that did- and they didn't really do anything about it. It was funny, cause most of the juniors and seniors actually didn't like the class of '08 at our school. mellow.gif The class of '08 at my school are jerks...but anyway. Yeah, I don't mind it. ;x As long as it's not taken to a huge level and taken seriously.

I don't see much people "really" hating on freshmen, everyone has been freshman before, so why hate them? It's like hating yourself from 2-4 years ago.

There is no one hating me/and many other freshmen just because of being a freshmen, at least in my school.

I've had an incident when a freshmen thought she was the shit. Basically she was in front of my locker and I couldn't get it open, so I asked her nicely to move over. She refused to move over. So I just pushed her over. Then I screamed at her.

Yeah, kind of mean, but that kind of attitude calls for some kind of yelling and action.

Most freshmen are fine. Except the ones that stand in huge groups, walk slow, or make unnecessary amounts of noise. But then again, that goes for everyone.

I never hate freshmen until they do stupid immature things. When they act like idiots I call them out for it and treat them how they should be treated. It's kinda like the newbs here who tHiNk tYpInG lIk3 dIz iZ cOoL.

I actually have a lot of freshmen friends. My girlfriend was one last year when we first started dating, XD

ROFL that's funny. Haha, hopefully I won't do something equally stupid when I start college.

In general, people don't hate freshmen on purpose. It's their own immature actions which brings on the discrimination.
