I say ''Care-a-mel''. Saying ''Car-Mel'' doesn't sound right to me.

You know you spelled them the same way in the title? =P

Anywho, I say caramel, because it makes sense..there's an 'a' there, and I don't recall ever seeing a silent 'a' in a word..

Now, when it comes to route, is it "root" or "rowt?" That is the question.

That's what I believe too. I say root though...rowt sounds odd.

I say caramel, why would it be carmel? Would you call someone named Cara "car"?

caramel, just because that's the way i heard it since childhood, and that's the way i normally see it keyed as well.

the only thing with the 'silent a' is that it's generally not spelled with the middle a when pronounced 'kar-mel'

I say "care-uh-mel".

This reminds me of that one commercial with the kid and Shaq, when they're sitting on some steps and arguing about which word is the right pronunciation.

Well that's where we differ then. I do indeed pronounce it "rowt."

It makes ya wonder about a lot of things about our language. Like, when it comes to comb and tomb, why is it "cohm" but "toom?"
