so, I've been going out with my girlfriend for about a month and a week now.
and right now, she's thinking about breaking up with me... not for anything I did, but because of my parents. My parents have always been overprotective. I went to a small Catholic school from kindergarten until 8th grade and now that I'm in a public highschool, they're having issues with accepting that I have new friends. They're used to knowing all my friends and thier parents really well. It's really hard because they dont want me hanging out with people they dont know... and there's no way they can get to know them if they're gonna be doing that. I've tried to have people over, and I had my gf over once and she didnt do anything that would cause my parents to not like her... or at least I didnt think so. I've been trying to hang out with her more, but my parents dont want me to. They seem to think she's "a troublemaker"... and this is really putting a strain on our relationship because I can only see her at school... and thats not very much... a total of about 15 minutes a day. I'm starting to wonder if maybe my parents have figured out that I'm not straight... I suppose that would partially explain things. They're homophobes and besides that, they dont want me dating until I'm 16 or 17 either. (i'm 15 right now) I really dont want to lose my gf over something like this... how can I figure out why my parents dont want me hanging out with her and how can I convince my parents to let me hang out with her more? |

That's tough kiddo. That sounds A LOT like my own parents. They're always like, "I don't like that girl, she's just..weird."
I just tell them, "That's not a good enough reason to not like someone. You don't even know her. You're going to have to get over it because I'm going to keep hanging out with her." You should just calmly tell them that they need to relax and let you start being more sociable, and that there's no way they can trust you if they don't give you the chance to be responsible. |

i don't think there's anything you can do to change your parent's views on this lesbian thing. they sent you to a catholic school, if they're that serious about religion then they're not going to crack.
but the thing with some people is that you can do what you want but don't bring it to them. you can hang out with your girlfriend and stuff but you can't do that kind of stuff at home. have some respect for your parents. plus, you should have known that they wouldn't approve if they sent you to catholic school. your parents don't like her big whoop, who cares, they're not dating her, you are. they don't want her in the house, who cares, go take her out somewhere. you kind of have to realize where your parents are coming from. they raised this angelic little catholic girl then when public school rolls by they find out their darling is a lesbian...not exactly something religious people enjoy. i think they'd be more comfortable and allow you to go along with your business as long as you don't bring it to their face. they'll get over it some day, and if they don't, they failed as parents if they're going to let the bible come between them and their daughter. |
