Jacobus Franciscus "Jim" Thorpe.

I'm really disappointed that he fails to get any sort of notable recognition. He has an award, but it really doesn't get the publicity that Heisman does.

Jim Thorpe was the athlete of athletes.

Stetson Kennedy. He was instrumental in putting the brakes on the Ku Klux Klan's post-World War II recruitment drive. If you've never read about this guy, you should—his story is great. He infiltrated the KKK and then passed information to the writers of the Superman radio show, who revealed all the secrets of the KKK on the air, which led to a dramatic drop in KKK recruitment.

(And yes, he's also directly related to the guy who created the Stetson hat.)

He's related to a guy by his first name?

Indeed. They come from the same family, hence the name.
