Hm, I never joined band. But I am in a flute symphony group which consists of all flutes (then sometimes, random people get to play piccolo). But whenever our conductor needs us to shut up, she just gets the piccolos to play high notes. Seems to work..

Oh, playing the flute in fourth register is horror to the ears as well. (A normal flute player only plays up to the third register). Gahhhhhhhhh

I suppose not. They seem to play quite random stuff for the most part.

Wow. I don't know, we always assumed most people did. On Friday, North Gwinnett had some flutes, and people were surprised. Somehow the director interpreted them as a more appropriate marching instrument

Yeah, last year in band class they had clarinets in front of them, too. I would have a headache the rest of the day. My friend, the first chair flute, had to be forced into marching because she didn't want to play piccolo. She gives away all piccolo solos in concert band as well

We have the saddest band ever. In a band of, oh, I don't know, 70 people, we have 22 flutes.

Usually it's altosax,tenor sax, bari sax, trombone, trumpet, guitar, bass, piano.

I love when clarinets are included in jazz. Best example, Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. My favorite piece EVER. The clarinet solo is amazing, along with the piano solo. Oh goodness how I love Rhapsody in Blue.

Yea, but sometimes clarinets sound good. But, they really do belong more for classical pieces. I love soprano saxes though. They sound great either way you go. My old band director was a sax god; he played soprano every day for us. He was so amazingly good.

Wow, really? Most jazz bands I have seen include clarinets--it was a fairly common jazz instrument.

Yeah, it's the same around here. And and..I thought flutes were pretty common in jazz band, as well.

Our jazz bands don't have clarinets.
We have flutes for solos but never seen a clarinet. Ah oh well lol

Last year, we had a flute player try for jazz band on sax, and the only reson she made it was so they could give her the flute parts and she wouldn't have to just sit there the rest of the time. But a couple measures of a flute part doesn not qualify as having flutes

Clarinets are more of a recent addition to the Jazz world. Usually, its just Trumpets, Saxes, Bones, and Rhythm Section. Nowadays, there are lots of Bass Clarinets, Clarinets, Flutes and Mallet Percussion.
