Yeah, I'm definitely white-washed. I live in a mostly white community and I went to a white elementary and middle school. I did not know that much about my culture and other Asian cultures other than what I learned from my parents. But, I don't speak Chinese, nor can I read or write it. It was really until I went to my high school, which is predominately asian that I suppose I "reconnected" with my Asian side... But I still think I'm white-washed and my boyfriend jokes around with me about that.

Nope I guess not.
Even when I was living in Australia when I was small, I still learned Chinese so I wouldn't consider myself as whitewashed. |

Nope. I don't try to act white and be accepted. I act the way I want to act and well to most people that comes off as whitewashed. Oh well.

QUOTE(uninspiredfae @ Jul 24 2005, 7:50 PM) I'm accused of being whitewashed. These stupid little girls would tell me how whitewashed I am for not celebrating such and such holidays or for not speaking Vietnamese when I'm around Vietnamese. I hate to tell them that it's simply a preference of mine and that I could beat them all in a writing/reading/culture/history test. But ah... people will say what they wanna say. ![]() |

In some subtle ways, yes, but that's only from living in North America for 13 years. But most people I know (including myself) consider myself not to be whitewashed, especially when I live in a place where something like 50% of the population is Asian.
I celebrate all the Chinese holidays, I speak the language, I watch the TV, I listen to the music, and if Canada were up against China/Hong Kong in some Olympic event, you bet I'd root for the Chinese team. |

Ummm....I guess you can say I'm partially white-washed. I don't speak/write/read Chinese, though I can understand some. Haha. I enjoy watching some Asian films. I don't watch any Asian channels or listen to any of that type of music. So I sorta am white-washed. Yeah...

I guess I'm kinda white washed...even tho its understandable seeing as I knew maybe one black person befroe I was 10 years old...my whole family is black as well. in elementary school I only had one non white friend...in junior high I had only 2. It wasnt really until 9th grade that I started making friends with more people...and really it wasnt that I didnt like other people, it was that people, especially black people, would talk about how I was too white. I cant help it tho. being half white wasnt my choice. SO yeah, the few friends I haddidnt really care. Everyone else hated on me. Expecially in high school when I started losing wieght and getting pretty. lol. so yeah. Its hard for me becuase I just am who I am. I wouldnt consider it white washed, because I dont try to do the things I do. I'm just a product of my environment.

QUOTE(AkaRyux @ Jul 24 2005, 8:24 PM) I'm whitewashed completely, but I don't do it for attention. I was born in the USA; how do you expect me to speak Vietnamese and know about my culture? I don't even go by the same religion as most Vietnamese (Buddhism). I'm whitewashed and proud, I guess. I'd rather be white than asian and I don't really have any asian pride. ![]() Well I was born in Canada, lived in Vegas for 9 years... QUOTE(barelyy_coherent @ Jul 24 2005, 10:09 PM) In some subtle ways, yes, but that's only from living in North America for 13 years. Me too...I do celebrate Chinese holidays (around the house, Chinese New Year is way more important), I watch Chinese (Hong Kong..TVB) dramas, but then, I wouldn't know who to root for because I'm from Canada too =P. My culture is really both, and split halfway. Sometimes in my thoughts, it would be in Cantonese, sometimes it would be in English. I love Chinese music way more, I love American and Chinese food. I celebrate both holidays. I watch American movies, but Chinese series. When I speak Cantonese to my mother sometimes, a few English words pop up. Sometimes when I speak English too, I'd think of better words to describe a situation in Cantonese. One thing is probably the fact that I can't write chinese (at least I can write my own name). I can read a LITTLE bit, like enough to know a few in everything, but not enough to read sentences. You see...I'm both, exactly. |

I hope Im not. People say that I sound like a white person sometimes And usually its my own Liberian people who tell me that, or they either call me valley girl, but I could care less. I mean what can I say I live in California. But I dont really see how I could be since I did grow up in a place full of mostly Mexicans, and a few blacks. But whatever.
