I just bought myself a pair of hamsters a while ago, and while i was trying to put the male hamster in the cage he kept on jumping and jumping causing me to accidentally drop him (but only on the table) And when i tried picking him up again he BIT me! and now my right hand's ring fingers wrapped in a circle shaped band-aid.. so much for cute, cuddly and loving hamsters I wanted. am i one of the worse hamster owners? cry.gif or is it no one's fault coz maybe the hamster got a little afraid as well? I hope I'll be able to get along with them soon..

Who here has a hamster for a pet? If yes, How are you getting along with them? laugh.gif

i have owned hamsters all my life. they are usually stressed when they are with a new owner and its not uncommon for them to bite you especially since they are already stressed and then you drop it, the hamster thinks you are doing him/her harm so they bite. but not to worry. make sure you handle it gently and keep it in good health and it will warm up to you fast

That sounds like my sisters old hamster. We used to call her "Jenny the Vampire" because she bit everyone even if they weren't mean to her. Some hamsters I guess are just vicious. We used to have two other hamsters, Vanilla Ice & Cocoa, but my dog bit them both and they died. cry.gif

maybe he was just defending the other hamster.
or maybe it's cause u dropped him..
i mean, if i was a hamster and u dropped me, heck, i'd shoot u with my water bottle in my cage. bite u and give u rabies.

moo.

Some people gets cute fluffy little pets and think great , as soon as we get home we'll be friends for life, he'll love being with me, they don't realise that friendships take time, especially with a giant.

If he bites you again, like when you pick him up or something, try just putting your hand in his cage, don't go towards him, let him come to you until he gets used to you and trusts you. I had a rat who was very nervy and nipped when she was picked up/her space was invaded, but I spent time with her and she got used to the idea that I wasn't going to hurt her.

Remember - ignorance is the #1 killer of pets, think about it carefully before you get one

I have a hamster.

First, I hamster-sat one on vacation. It didn't bite. I wanted hamsters for my birthday so my friend gave me her cousin's because she didn't want them. Without warning me, the hamsters BITE. You would literally BLEED when they bit you. They died a few months later. I bought a new hamster a couple weeks after. They were the same kind from the one that I hamster-sat. The one's my friend gave me were ugly and bit people. My hamster now does not bite.

My advice is to let it go in the cage for a while to get it used to the cage and then pet it in the cage a little while after. And then you should start picking it up. If it drops, just pet it to let it know it's okay.

And it makes a huge difference on what kinds they are, too.

yeah, You did scare him. I mean, if you were that small, and someone as big as a human dropped you, and then, they picked you back up, wouldn't you bite them??

Well, just handle them more, and DON'T DROP THEM, and they should be friendly, at least, my bros is.

The hamster dislikes its cage partner, you must give him time to adapt and get used to his cage partner then he'll probably go in the cage without a fight. It seemed like you were forcing him to get into the cage and therefore, he bites you.
