Yeah .. It's kind of weird and very unsensitive of me to be putting up this thread but .. isn't it true? Like for example, September 11 - we weren't so patriotic before that and now look it's all, "GOD BLESS AMERICA!" and "I <3 AMERICA!"

It's like we all need reassurance so patriotism is where to go! WOO!

Don't yell at me and stuff ... I'm just ranting.

Yah I get what your saying. I thought that too after 9/11. It was more of a wake-up call you know. But it kinda makes us look bad.

err kind of i guess. but im my opinion, people started being all like "i love america" or "god bless america" because september 11th made america more stronger in a way. so yeah in a way the deaths did kind of make america more patriotic since it united everyone

NO , because after events like that people realize the country needs unity , patriotism was always there just alittle bit more visible.

I agree. I think we were always patriotic, but events like this really show us what we are really like, and after things like this, some not all people are kind of alone feeling and scared and need something to believe in. But I think it is just more visible after something like this. I think the US also wants to show the world they are not giving in, they are banding together. etc.

Yeah, but it was after 9/11 that you get the FBI all over your ass for not being as "patriotic" as everyone else.

Yeah it's kinda sad that we need a national disaster like that to remind us of american pride. I'm sure Bush never wore those red flag pins on his suits until after September 11th.

wurd.

patriotism is BS. they're just kissing the government's bum.

when somone dies, it reminds other people that they can die, aswell. then they try to do whtever they can to prevent it. 9/11 was a bunch of people dying and people being scared of their own deaths. so the bush administration said "be patriotic! whatever i do is right!" and people are scared enough to believe him. that's partiotism.

Some of the people in this thread just dont have a clue to what patriotism is.. Patriotism is representing your love for your country, where you were born and raised.. whether it's England, USA, etc. I've noticed people in USA who dont believe in all this patriotic stuff dont know shit about history. Go rent the movie Saving Private Ryan.. maybe you'll get a glimpse of what defending freedom is all about. I"m sick of all these brats that sit on there ass and bitch about current events. What does it do? Nothing.. and ryfitaDF, burning a flag doesn't solve anything but make you look stupid. I'm curious though, what country is better than USA in your opinion? I know i'm thankful to be an american, and some people in this country need to be too rather than bitch

i agree.

for example, during WWII, when they put the japanese in the camps, because they could pose some possible threat, showed that you really cant just go along with whatever the government says for the sake of patriotism. people need to resist for anything to improve or for justice to occur

i loathe him, i really do.

please be joking when you imply that your morality ad sense of patriotism isbased on saving private ryan. b/c i might cry.
and also, flag burning doesn't make someone look stupid. a complete unwillingness to tolerate the opinions and insights of otheres does. not to imply anything, dear one. i got love for all.

for not knowing shit about hisory... does watergate fill you with national pride? or the slave trade? or the imprisonment of japanese-americans during the second world war? or president clinton shagging monica lewinsky? b/c history aint a one sided argument, kiddo.

you are gonna have ISSUES in the real world if a bunch of teens on the web irk you this much. now develop, and unless you have something sensible to say, rather than just wanting undying loyalty to a hunk of continental crust, then be quiet

paˇtriˇotˇism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ptr--tzm)
n.
Love of and devotion to one's country.

Do I love my country? Not really. Do I love the ideals of what it stands for? Sometimes yes and sometimes Hell no. Am I devoted to my country? I sure as hell would not go to war for this country. I would rather kill myself than die in a war for oil and big business in a foreign land.

nationalism
n 1: love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it [syn: patriotism]2: the doctrine that your national culture and interests are superior to any other [ant: multiculturalism, internationalism] 3: the aspiration for national independence felt by people under foreign domination 4: the doctrine that nations should act independently (rather than collectively) to attain their goals [ant: internationalism]

defintions taken from dictionary.com

1: love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it

A lot of people feel that way about the US. They are very gung-ho and very proud of their country. They talk about how the war is good, Bush is a great president and that Iraq wants us and need us. Those people, in my opinion, are the ones who need a wake-up call. Screw your nationalist ways. You are mostly likely the people who won't have to make any kinds of sacrifices for this war. You will not be sent to fight there, you will not be going without your freedoms. Screw this Nationalistic, full of shit government of the US. To all of those who have loved ones who are currently serving in the military or have served in the military under this administration, I hope that all is well with you and yours.

2: the doctrine that your national culture and interests are superior to any other [ant: multiculturalism, internationalism]

That covers a lot of people in the US. It also covers the policy of our government in foreign affairs. I laugh at our government and the people who believe that America is superior. America is only superior to every other nation in one way: WAR. No other nation can even begin to compare to the US when it comes to the money spent on war. Or the money that is spent on developing ways to kill more people faster with greater accuracy and less damage to ourselves. The last 3 major wars the US has fought in, we have "lost" due to the fact that they weren't really wars...they were just special interest business projects of the disgustingly and overwhelming rich business tycoons of the US and it's allied business partners. Vietnam=a war for control of southeast Asia. Gulf War=war for control of middle east and oil. Afghanistan/Iraq=war for oil and big business. A second attempt to establish control of the middle east.

3: the aspiration for national independence felt by people under foreign domination

That's how Iraqis feel about the coalition soldiers stationed there. We kill their families, we humiliate them, they retaliate and kill our soldiers...They hate our presences but want out protection. We are losing faith because no good ever comes out of this situation. Establishing a democracy will not solve these problems. We are only driving Iraq to become a nation that it has never been. Few people know this, but Iraq was not a country until some Europeans and Americans drew some lines on a map of the middle east. The people living there were just lumped together. Simple, right?? No, because the people living there hate each other. The coalition is driving these people together under a cause...and creating a monster.

your right. thousand of people didn't have to die in order for people to have more patriotism. and the fact that they did is really stupid. i mean im sorry those people had to die and my symphathies to their famalies but i don't feel that 9/11 or the war on terror has made me anymore patriotic.

lol... i didnt realized that, but just thinking of it...yeah now i realize it... before 9/11...there wasnt much of god bless america... like these days.. in people's xanga or when they leave you a comment, they say "god bless america!!" or "god bless you for living in the USA!" i was like "umm ok..... dot dot dot" hm i didnt know saving private ryan was something to do with freedom, politics, patriosim type of movie.. hehe. anyways, oh or maybe they're being sooo patriotism freak cause they dont want other countries to know that we are less loving our country and also to make them help our country...and to serve our country by going to the wars in Iraq? that's my opinion to this topic heh.

led zeppelin, being that you dont know james, i wouldnt tell him hat he can and cannot have an opinion about. he lived here for 10 years, the majority of his life, which in my opinion makes him more than capable of having an intelligent view of our governement, as he has in fact experienced it. hes a good deal less ignorant than you are

and if i remember correctly (which i do) you attacked john on his political views first, which is just as wrong as him loathing you for yours

firstly, cretin, dont use retarded as an insult, as its xtremely offensive to people who ar infact mentaly handicapped.

i loathe you b/c you refuse to see the merti in other people's opinion, not b/c of your political views. adn im not bitching about america, but about people who blindly standup for it solely for the sake of it, and the fact that waving a flag is easier than social change.

now go away, please
