Indie Music Rising ? Options

more and more i start to see indie music start to rise from the depths of the underground ..and start to turn mainstream ...ic more people liking coldplay , common , and any specific such of indie type music ....more people are getting bored of the same old music ..... I personally think this will revolutionize the way Music is in the upcoming generations .......i even myself cant keep up with this movement in music .

Soo what do you guys think , will there be such a change in the way music is today .... i think so .

Heh, well, yeah. I think indie is becoming more popular than it was. I once heard a Postal Service song on the radio. That's really rare. YEAHYEAH. Almost everyone at my school used to hate the postal service and now they love'em. And the Plain White T's. I believe they're indie.

I think everyone is gona turn to Indie music. Half of my friends did. They used to be hardcore on rock music, but now they are like into indie music. My sister is one of them

So yeah I think it's Indie music turn haha.

Lets see it used to be hiphop...now it's rock and later it will be indie. I wish techno will be the next round after Indie haha.

yea indie means independent labels...it doesnt have to be rock only ...it could be rap etc ....and i know common he just gives me a good interpretation from other rappers out there .

but i hate when the underground/indi bands get all big
its happening alot. their music IMO, just starts to suck.

as long as you're on an independent label instead of a major one you're an "indie artist" it doesn't really imply anything about the status of the artist

I love most "Indie" bands, I think they're great, but it's just a label. I do think it will become more popular and everything. And Coldplay isn't really Indie, aren't they more... mainstream?

coldplay i guess u can say was indie when their "parachutes" album came out. i could see them being indie before they became mainstream. they have that sound. i never knew i would like indie till i discovered the postal service. LUV LUV LUV em'. prolly my fav band. i heard them at a dance recital of all things, and i'm enthralled. now they're becoming popular and i'm afraid they'll become too popular to be uniquely the postal service. kinda how coldplay ended up.

Actually, Coldplay's first label was Fierce Panda, which is an independent record label. Now they are handled by Parlophone (in the UK) and Capitol (in the US), which are both part of the EMI Group, which is a record label; so they're not indie anymore, but they were at one time.

Remember, indie and alternative are not the same thing. It's unlikely, but possible for a mainstream band to be handled by an indie record label.

But in the more common sense of the word, that's not what indie implies. Besides which, the only decent radio station here plays "everything alternative" but the most obscure things they play are the flaming lips and the shins

But I don't see why it's so bad for an indie band to go mainstream. Take Death Cab for Cutie for example. Really talented guys in that band, but they used to not be manistream. Now that they've gained exposure over the years, they're becoming more and more popular. Therefore, kids who used to listen to really crappy music could open their ears to an awesome band.

It''s what happens after they go mainstread that's bad. Sure, it's good when a band gets recognized, but it;s really annoying when people start obsessing and being stupid. Because frankly, people are stupid.

It's because once a band goes to a major label, the label has more control over their music than the band does, which heavily influences creative direction. A major label is interested in only one thing, money, whereas an indie label--and, therefore, a band on an indie label--is often genuinely interested in art or getting across an idea.

Take a look at any of Ian Mackaye's bands. They all stayed indie, and one fact about them is that they rarely played a show that cost more than $10. Why? Because they felt people should have the opportunity to listen to them, because they had a message, and they were interested in music, not making money. Find a non-indie band that has shows for $10 today--it's pretty damned difficult, if not impossible. Why? Because the labels handling those bands don't care about art or music or messages--they care about money.
